About the Tune
The tune was either written by John Bannerman or is a traditional melody collected by legendary piper Peter A. MacLeod. It is a traditional reel played and sung at wedding receptions in Scotland. The original words were written in Scottish Gaelic by John Bannerman in 1935. Hugh Roberton wrote new words in 1936, though they have little to do with the original text.
Performance Considerations
A small group of fellows walks through their village on the way to a wedding of their dear friend, Mairi. They sing as they walk. As other villagers hear them, they come out of their shops and homes to join them, the group steadily growing. Performance should be dramatic and earthy; not too polite. Have fun!
* The stomps, claps and pats are merely a suggestion; experiment with your choir, or leave them out altogether. If used as a processional, the foot stomps may be left out. Feel free to add an occasional shout, hoop or holler, too.
* Measures 41–48 may be altered or omitted at the discretion of the performer.
Text and Pronunciation
* Mairi (“MEH-ree”) is the equivalent of Mary.* Myrtle (“MUR-tul”), or bog-myrtle, is a dark-green evergreen shrub which grows
in the bogs and moors of Scotland and Wales.* Bracken (“BRACK-in”) is a fern-like plant that is green until early autumn, when
it turns brown.* A shieling (“SHEE-ling”) is a summer pasture with a rough hut to shelter the cattle
herds.* Peat had several uses in Scotland, including as building material and kindling. It
is used to smoke barley before it is fermented to make scotch.* A creel is a basket.* Tae (“tuh" or “teh”) is unaccented. It is another word for "to."* Bairns are children.* Weel is another word for “well”, and may pronounced either as “weel” or as “well”.* Rowans (“ROH-inz”) are a red, rose-like flower.
