CIRCUS VOCABULARY

Bungee trampoline : this is a regular trampoline combined with bungee jumping apparatus. Tall poles are attached to the sides of the trampoline and bungee cords are attached to the poles. The jumper wears a harness that is attached to the bungee cords thanks to which he can jump and perform simple acrobatics in total safety.

Corde lisse or Spanish web: the former is literally a « smooth rope », considered the purist of the aerial disciplines, while the Spanish web is a rope with a small loop attached to it, through which the performer can secure an ankle or wrist and spin, with the assistance of a “web setter”. Both are physically strenuous activities.

Equilibristics or the art of balance: balance is an essential art in all circus activities including juggling, but also in dance, gymnastics and sports such as cycling.

Tightrope walking: one of the quintessential circus balancing acts: the performer must maintain his balance while walking along a wire stretched between two points, at a moderate or greater height (the latter is called highwire)..

Juggling: a physical skill involving the manipulation of objects that the juggler tosses into the air and catches; the juggler may use any number of objects, and one or both hands.

Aerial silk: a physically demanding aerial discipline whereby the performer uses his arms, followed by his feet, to perform aerial acrobatics including climbs, wraps and drops.

Trampoline: a taut, strong fabric stretched over a steel frame secured with springs that provide the elasticity for the gymnast to jump and perform somersaults, etc.

Fixed or static trapeze: a horizontal bar suspended from two parallel ropes used to perform acrobatic tricks, above and below the bar.

« Carte verte » The « Carte Verte » is a French system to ensure the golf course that a player is respectful of

golfing etiquette and capable of playing without disrupting other players

The « Carte Verte » cannot be issued at Club Med Resorts, but golfers without an index may register for one by playing in certain competitions

Caddy: a person who carries a player’s clubs, and the only person authorised to give players advice during competitions

Clubs: a golfer generally uses a set of clubs, the maximum number in a set being 14, comprising woods, irons and putters

Etiquette: golfing etiquette refers to the rules regarding behaviour of players on and off the course

Green Fee: players must purchase a green fee in order to access the court

Links: name given to a course located by the sea, usually in a coatal zone with dunes

Par: number of strokes that a hole (or course) is theoretically considered to require ; the par for a hole (3 to 5) depends on its length; the par for a course is the sum of the pars for the holes that make up the course; the par for most courses is between 70 and 73

Pro: the diminutive of golf professional

Pro shop: shop selling golf equipment

Swing: the player’s movement when hitting the ball with a club

Handicap: the former grading system for amateur golfers, now replaced by the index system

Index: the ranking system for amateur golfers, starting at number 54, meaning a player capable of playing 54 strokes over "par" on an 18-hole course, i.e. 18 holes X 3 strokes over par = 54

Handicap or Index Card: Card stating the golfer’s level of play

SLACKLINE

Slacklining is a recent sport, a modern version of tightrope walking. It uses stretch webbing made of polyester, and the « slackliner » has no accessories to help keep his or her balance. The line is strung between two points (trees, posts, etc) with an anchor and tension system. The system makes it adaptable for indoor or outdoor use, in cities or parks, wherever you are able to rig up the line.

EQUIPMENT

A Stand Up Paddle board measures between 7.6 and 15 feet and can weigh up to 16 kilos

The paddle is often made of synthetic resin or aluminium but the newer models tend to be made of carbon fibre or wood for the more expert paddleboarders

A safety leash is attached to the paddleboarder’s wrist or ankle, and boarders are recommended to wear a safety jacket

Lessons from 5 years old in 9 Resorts

Tuition: one to one lessons given on request by the Club Med swimming instructor (Maître Nageur Sauveteur) during the pool opening hours, when the pool is not too busy. Lessons based on the learner’s needs, from age 5 upwards: beginners and experienced swimmers. Parents’ agreement required for under 17 –year olds

Younger children can learn to feel at ease in the water, and children from age 7 upwards can learn to swim.

Teaching includes the various strokes and techniques, including breathing techniques, and individual correction of technique and style.

Enrol on site with the swimming instructor (MNS)

Size of groups at Club Med: 1 G.O® MNS for 4 G.M®s

WINDSURFING - Top Sport

Windsurfing: The board is equipped with a mast and sail; the windsurfer stands on the board and holds onto the rig to steer, paying attention to water conditions and wind direction..

A funboard is smaller than a windsurf board with no central keel; the funboarder is interested in speed and acrobatics.

Group lessons for all levels from 11 years old in all EAF Resorts and between 11 and 14 years old in other zones depending on the Resort in 16 Schools

Free access also possible within the School’s opening and closing hours

Tuition: Our G.O®s have a Fédération Française de Voile diploma in France; in other countries they have a local or equivalent diploma or relevant experience.
