ViziTech USA Reaching Out to Japan

If you missed our program on March 9, you missed a fantastic show. Stewart Rodeheaver introduced us to the world of 3D education. Stewart’s company ViziTech USA is a 3D educational and consulting company that provides the hardware, software,

programming and filming to produce and provide 3D training for the De-partment of Defense, schools, colleges and businesses. While we are certain that we have some of the coolest, hippest Rotarians in the world, the members and guests in the photo above are actually viewing the presentation with special 3D glasses. At least that’s our story, and we’re sticking to it. However I still wouldn’t trust these characters on the left. Dir. Bill Booth (l) and President Walter Elliott (r) liked the fashion eyewear so much, Mr. Rodeheaver had to specifically ask them NOT to take them when they left.

Member Donates Stamps In 1955, the United States joined 26 other nations in issuing a commemorative stamp honoring Rotary International on its 50th anniversary. Fellow Rotarian Art Smith purchased some of the stamps in 1955 and recently donated a couple for our club archives. Although this eight-cent commemorative is not numerically rare (some 80 million were printed), it is the sole "Rotary stamp" ever issued by the country in which Rotary was founded. Like many commemora-tives, it has an interesting story. In the months before Rotary's Golden Anniversary of 1955, Emerson Gause, a longtime member of the Rotary Club of Chicago as well as a RI staff member and former editor of The Rotarian, was so impressed with a brochure for The Rotary Foundation that he

suggested Willi Wolf Wind, an award-winning stamp designer for the United Nations, adapt the cover design as a commemorative. Gause went on to help persuade many countries to issue Rotary commemorative stamps for 1955 and the years following. As he began his work on the project, Wind, a U.S. immigrant from Israel, knew neither which country would issue his design nor what the denomination would be (hence the words "X.Y. Postage" in the upper-right-hand corner of the original design, as well as the randomly assigned denomination of three cents). The finalized version of the commemorative went on sale on 23 February 1955 — Rotary's 50th anniversary — in the city of its birth. In a gala dinner in downtown Chicago, just blocks away from where Paul P. Harris and the other founders first gathered, the U.S. postmaster general presented then-RI President Herbert Taylor with an autographed sheet including Wind's original design. In addition to the U.S. stamp, Cuba, Australia, Belgium, The Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Denmark, Austria, Egypt, Nicaragua, Panama, and The Philippines all honored Rotary with postage stamps commemorating the Rotary’s Golden Anniversary.

In response to the massive earthquake and tsunami that struck off the coast of Japan on 11 March, the Board of Trustees of The Rotary Foundation has estab-lished the Rotary Japan Disaster Recovery Fund. All contributions will support long-term recovery projects carried out in the affected areas. The Trustees will manage the fund. Checks should be made payable to The Rotary Foundation and include the notation “Rotary Japan Disaster Recovery Fund, #G10005.” Send donations to:

We also inducted two new mem-bers during our last meeting. Baha Zeidan (l) is the CEO of Azalea Health Innovations in Downtown Valdosta. Jimmy Shiver (r) is a financial advisor with Wells Fargo Advisors LLC. Both new members were sponsored by Myrna Ballard. Myrna is one of our most active recruiters and also received a special pin and recognition for her commitment to Rotary and our club.

Our Sunshine Report was brought to us by Donald Davis. Donald pledged $60 worth

of Happy Dollars in honor of his birthday last week, but immediately reneged

complaining about a meeting cancellation. At press time, we’re still trying to collect.

91 Celebrating

Years of Service 92 This is a special week for the Rotary Club of Valdosta. Our club was first organized 92 years ago this week. The world’s first service club, the Rotary Club of Chicago, was formed on February 23, 1905 by Paul P. Harris. Harris was an attorney who wished to capture within a professional club the same friendly sprit he had felt in the small towns of his youth. As the first club chartered in the state of Florida and the nearest club to Valdosta, Jacksonville members were approached by a select group of men in Valdosta to sponsor a Valdosta club. Reluctant at first, Jacksonville finally agreed and the club was organized March 24, 1919 and received its charter on June 1, 1919. Founded with 21 members, they met at the Valdez Hotel for lunch so that the Jacksonville sponsoring members could come to Valdosta that morning by train and return that afternoon. The early club also met at the Daniel Ashley Hotel, the Patterson Hotel, and the Women’s Center.
