I. Lesson Framework Each program plan which lasts for a year, consist of 5 modules and covers 3 themes. The three themes identified for this year 2012 will be Traditional Chinese Medicine, Healthy Living and Culinary Skills. The elderly and youths can then choose to sign up for the module they are interested in. Each module consists of 2 lessons. The frequency of the lesson is conducted twice every 2 months, with each lesson lasting for 2 hours or more.
The table below shows show the programs will be conducted.

Each lesson will first start with ice-breaking games, before activity 1 commences. After that, a 10 minutes break will be given before activity 2 starts. At the end of the lesson, there will be a short sharing session whereby each pair of elderly and youth buddy shares about what challenges they have encountered during the hands-on activities and what they have learnt together or from each other.

II. Module Guide Module 1: Basic of Traditional Chinese Medicine I (Oct 2012):
Module highlights:
- Basic concepts of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
- Know your common traditional Chinese herbs
- Learn how you to make common Chinese herbs palatable through
fun and practical hands-on sessions for making nourishing herbal
drinks and desserts

Lesson 1 - Dietary Knowledge of TCM For Activity 1, it will be a workshop given by a TCM practitioner on the basic theory and concepts of TCM (Part 1). There will be a lesson given about the usage, dosage and effects of common Chinese herbs used in Singapore (Part 2).
For Activity 2, Hands-on making of herbal drinks and Hands-on making of either one of 2 herbal desserts (stuffed red date and Steamed Goji and Logan Cupcake) conducted by the youth buddies.
Lesson 2 – Other aspects of TCM in Singapore For Activity 1, there will be a lesson given about the basic concept of ‘qi’ and ‘xue’. Qi Gong and its health benefits will also be introduced and explored. (Part 1) There will also be a workshop given by a TCM practitioner on the acupuncture massage and simple tui na skills. (Part 2)
Activity 2, Know more about the benefits of qi gong and how to practice
them and hands-on session to practice different style of qi gong. This
activity will be prepared and taught by Elderly.

Module 2: Chronic Disease Management (Dec 2012):
Module highlights:
- Learn about healthy tips on how to prevent the on struck of
common chronic diseases
- Understand different types of health screening tests and the
importance of them
- Learn how to manage common chronic diseases (heart disease,
high blood pressure and diabetes) well.
- Check your health level with us during the health screening offered
- Eat your way to better health by learning healthy dishes that can
help in disease prevention and management

Lesson 1 – Health screening, Diabetes Prevention and Management For Activity 1, there will be a talk given on diabetes, including the symptoms, risk factors and management. Tips on planning a meal for people with diabetes will also be shared in the lesson. For Activity 2, a talk about different types of important health screening tests that elderly should undergo periodically. Their youth buddies will then proceed to conduct a simple health screening for the elderly mentors at the end of the session. The simple health screening will include taking of BMI, blood pressure, capillary blood glucose and blood lipid testing. Lesson 2 – Prevention and Management of Chronic Heart diseases For Activity 1, there will be a lesson given about the signs, symptoms, risk factors and management of chronic heart diseases. Also, risks associated with high blood pressure and how to manage high blood pressure through a change in lifestyle. For Activity 2, it will be a hands-on session, where ingredients such as kelp and celery that are proven to be able to lower high blood pressure will be used to cook some healthy dishes. The 2 dishes, stir-fry celery with assorted vegetables and kelp salad, will be taught by the elderly mentors.

Module 3: Traditional local kuehs and Western Desserts I (March 2013):
Module highlights:
- Making of traditional kuehs (Ang Ku Kueh, Oneh Oneh and Nine-
layered Kueh)
- Making of Western desserts (Caramel Custard Pudding, Pandan
Chiffon Cake and Peach Swiss roll)

Lesson 2 – Making of Oneh Oneh and Pandan Chiffon Cake For Activity 1, youth will be teaching their elderly mentor how to bake Pandan Chiffon Cake.

For Activity 2, youth will be taught how to make Oneh Oneh by their elderly mentor. Module 4: Traditional local kuehs and Western Desserts II (June 2013):

Lesson 2 – Making of Kueh Dadar and fruit tart For Activity 1, youth will be teaching their elderly mentors how to make fruit tart.

For Activity 2, youth will be taught how to make Kueh Dadar by their elderly mentors. Module 5: Basic First Aid Skills and Knowledge (Aug 2013):

- Learn the correct way to deal with different types of common
wounds and burns
- Learn about the prevalence of falls and the significance of falls
- Learn how to make your house a low fall risk environment
- Understand your medication and the importance of taking it right

Lesson 1 - Basic wound care skills and first-aid skills on burns For Activity 1, there will be a lesson given about identifying and handling of basic wounds. How to identify the different types of burns and ways to handle a burn will also be covered in the lesson. For Activity 2, it will be a hands-on session, where the basic wound care skills and procedures to handle burns taught previously will be practiced. Lesson 2 – Medication-Are you taking it right?

For Activity 1, there will be a lesson given regarding medication safety. Details such as importance of medication compliance, danger of taking expired medication and potentially dangerous medication and food/alcohol interactions will be covered.
For Activity 2, it will be an activity session conducted by the young buddies where they will check the medications used by their elderly mentors and help them sort the medications for easy usage.
