From The General ManagerLast month, I highlighted the financial issues that must be addressed for the club to become Fiscally Fit. Most notably is the immediate need to increase Operating Income while maintaining or reducing Operat-ing Expenses. This is especially critical at this time as the club has been operated at break-even for the past three years. A review of what has changed from fiscal year-end in June 2008, when the club had Net Op-erating Income of $148,000 compared to fiscal year-end in June 2010, which operated at a loss of $(12,000) can provide some answers as to the best direction for the club to take. Since fiscal year-end in June 2008, Operating Revenue has de-creased $440,000. Of that total, Golf Membership Dues decreased $234,000; however total dues income decreased $176,000 as a result of the addition of Tennis/Social members. The increase in Tennis dues income was offset by the loss of $70,000 in rental income from the dis-solution of the SOTC as well as the increase in Operating Expense for the tennis facility. Additionally, food & beverage revenues decreased $120,000 due to the loss of corporate banquets and Initiation Fee In-come decreased $45,000. Also, revenue from unused food minimum decreased $14,000. During that same time, Operating Expense decreased $294,000 with reductions in Payroll and related taxes and benefits of $163,000, Other Expenses $112,000 and cost of goods sold of $40,000. However, some expenses increased including increases in Property and other taxes of $18,000, Utilities $22,000, Repair & Maintenance $18,000 and Bad Debt $19,000. What this reveals is that even while cutting

operating expenses in areas that can be controlled, half of the $160,000 dif-ference in operating income is a result of increases in expenses that we have little control over. The same could be said of operating revenue where $70,000 in profit from tennis rent dis-solved. Now that we can see the impact of changes in operating revenue and expenses the past two years leads us to address where we are today and how best to ensure that the club is profitable. Obviously, the club finances are membership dues driven. As of now, club membership is nearly identical to the same time a year ago; meaning even the successful membership drive last year only covered attrition the past six months. Also, we can expect continued increases in expenses with forecasts of inflation for supplies as well as increases for Property Taxes and Utilities. What all this means is that either membership dues revenue must increase or operating expenses must be reduced. Recent trends the past few years show that we can expect attrition of 50 or more Golf members mainly due to age, the economy, change in employment, relocation or because they no longer play golf. We must be success-ful in membership recruiting just to maintain the current level of dues revenue. However, that is not enough to cover increasing operating expenses, membership levels or dues revenue must be increased.

As a member, the best thing that you can do for your club is assist in the membership recruiting pro-cess. Introducing prospective members to the club by inviting them to experience a round of golf, dinner or a social event is the best way to show all your club has to offer. When someone you know has an inter-est in the club be sure to let us know and we’ll extend an invitation for membership. It’s the best thing you as a member can do for your club!

See you at YOUR Club!

NOTE: Regarding our First Friday Wine Tasting, each month a different winery is featured at this free event. The wine that is served is purchased by the club. The House and Wine Committees have been discussing the best options to reduce the cost. Beginning in April, sample “tastings” will be offered with the option to purchase a full glass or bottle to enjoy with dinner.

Club StorageThe annual billing for club storage will be coming soon on your April 1 statement. The fee for annual storage and cleaning for your clubs is $100. The monthly fee for the same service is $10. If you have a kangaroo style cart or pull cart, the fee is $120 per year or $12 per month. There is still plenty of room in the storage area for more clubs and bags to be stored and cleaned. There is very little room left for any pull carts due to limited floor space. As a reminder, we provide FREE pull carts for any person with club storage.

Youth Golf Sign Up March 1The annual Youth Golf Program will have its initial sign-up starting March 1 at the opening hour of the Golf Shop. The first 75 sponsored children will be included in the program. This program is open to all non-member children from the 7th grade through High School and any member of a college golf team, all of whom need an RVCC member as a sponsor. The annual fee is $100 for the program that runs from June 1, 2011 through February 15, 2012. Call the Golf Shop for further details and entry forms. The forms are available now.

HandicapsWith Spring on the way, it will soon be time to start posting scores on the GHIN system at the club. The first day of posting will be March 1 and the first revision will follow in 30 days. Remember to post all your scores, good or bad, nine or 18 holes. Purposely avoiding posting any scores is considered cheating just as much as if you were to take a four on a hole when you really had a five. We have posting stations in the Golf Shop, Men’s Locker Room and Ladies Locker Room for ease in posting your scores. Don’t forget to check the equitable stroke control before posting your score. Handicap fees are posted to member accounts at the end of February. The fee is $35 per adult member. Members who elect to decline must do so by March 31 in order to receive a credit. No credits will be issued after that date.

London Fog March 3The traditional opening day for the Rogue Valley Women’s Golf Associa-tion at the club will be Thursday, March 3. The ladies meet for breakfast and fogs early, have a short business meeting and then a shotgun start at 12:30pm. Men’s play that day will be early on the Original Course until 10:30am or on Course #2 after 12:30pm.

High School GolfThe High School golf season has started as of mid-February. We annu-ally host the varsity teams of boys and girls from North Medford, South Medford and St. Mary’s High School. This is a total of about 40 students, with about half the kids being members’ children. They are allowed use of the facilities on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays with a coach in attendance as mandatory. We have a schedule in place with one of the coaches spreading the schools use of the facilities. They schedule the use of the range, putting green, Hillcrest Hole, Black Oak

Hole, chipping green Course #1 and Course #2 so they spread out the use of the facility. They are also directed to defer to the members, especially on the range and the first tee of each course. I have already had a meeting with all the Coaches and Athletic Directors to fill them in on all the details such as course rules, dress code, tee time use, reserving the practice holes, member priority, range priority and conduct on the course and while at the club. We also have a contract that must be signed by each student agreeing to abide by the club’s rules of etiquette and conduct. We are also fortunate that two of the six coaches are members and can help us make sure the students are informed and conduct themselves accordingly. The coaches and stu-dents are always willing to help us whenever we ask. For years, they have helped us during the Rogue Valley Pairs as spotters; also helping us during the Men’s Club Invitational, helping the Golf Shop Staff on the range unplugging balls and fixing ball marks. They do appreciate the use of the club.

SOGCThe annual Southern Oregon Golf Championships will be held at RVCC for the 82nd year this August and Septem-ber. With a field of 416 players, it is the largest golf tourna-ment of its kind in the United States. The entry fee is $275 for this year and for that price you are guaranteed four rounds of golf or more, a wonderful tee prize, four cocktail parties with food, entertainment and more fun than most people can stand. Now is the time to plan on playing in this year’s event.

Entry blanks are available in the Golf Shop and the Clubhouse now. There is a discount for couples and for members who wish to participate ($250 for a member and $225 per member for a couple).

RVCC Men’s Member GuestIt’s not too early to start planning for this year’s Men’s Member Guest. This annual event will be held July 7, 8 and 9. The new format has been well received and we will make sure it operates better than ever this year. Sign-ups for this year’s tournament will begin in March with members who participated in 2010 having priority to commit and pay prior to April 15. Members who did not play in 2010 will have the opportunity to turn in entry blanks beginning April 16 and spots will be filled from a waiting list that will be put up in the Pro Shop on April 1. The waiting list will be started at the opening hour of the Golf Shop on April 1. There will be a maximum of 84 teams allowed. This is a much-anticipated event and usually fills up fast, so get your entries and money in early. The committee encourages all RVCC members to consider participating. RVCC Golf NewsBy Jim Wise

It’s here! Well, at least it feels like it. Golfing weather. As of this writing it has been absolutely great. But, Mother Nature has a funny way of balancing things out...hopefully not “too balanced.” With a reasonable golf season seemingly near, maybe you should take some time to decide what you want from your game this season. The answer is very personal, other than your golf professional, you don’t have to tell a soul. But you should decide for yourself. Here are some ideas to help you get started.

• What is the “state of your game”? Are you generally pleased with your results or generally frustrated? Are you hitting it well but scoring poorly? Is distance an issue? Take a realistic assessment. And, by the way, if you just want to play and aren’t worried one way or the other...it’s OK. Having fun is a terrific goal.

• You’ve made the assessment, now make a “plan.” Actually, the old practice adage fits in very nicely here: “Practice with a purpose, practice with a plan, practice with patience.” You’ve decided on the purpose, now make a plan that fits in well with your time constraints. Most “diets” fail because they are too ambitious. Be realistic and patient, which fits in very nicely with...

• ...your expectations for improvement. Let your improvement happen. Beware of improvement timetables. The more you try to force

the improvement the more difficult the change becomes.

• And finally, get some direction. And I’m not talking about magazines or the Golf Channel. If your name is used in the article or on the TV spot, have at it. See your game “guru” who knows YOUR game and is there to help.

A couple more thoughts...

Keep an eye on this newsletter, the weekly club email, and postings regarding this season’s offerings of 2 Day Camps, All Comers Clinics and general instruction programs here at RVCC. We have lots to offer for all levels of golfers.

Also, I want to thank everyone for their kind words of concern and encouragement since my ski accident. Two torn ACLs was the final diagnosis...but no “knife.” Lots of rehab and a good chance to be back on the course for the Spring Tour in April.

RulesRules Chair Carolyn Crews reports that there is a new local rule. If you are within two club lengths of the green and within two club lengths of an obstruction (like a sprinkler head) you may take relief.

Relief is the nearest point of relief no closer to the hole. (You do NOT get one club length.) The ball must be dropped, not placed. The rule may be read in its entirety on page 110 in the 2010-2011 Rules of Golf (Rule 24-2).If you would like to help out with any of the above, please contact Judith Zoll via e-mail at [email protected] or 541-858-0123.

Grounds ReportWith the improved weather in the second half of winter, it has allowed us to be able to work on the mounds on the left side of #12. As of the end of January the irrigation is complete and with a few more days of drying we will be able to haul the necessary sand to improve the soil profile. Once all of the sand is in place we will plant the trees, roto-til the sand and soil together and finish raking the surface; upon comple-tion we will grass the area. The frosty mornings we are experiencing has allowed us to remove a majority of the trees and all of the blackberries from the irrigation ditch that runs along the right side of #5 on the Oaks Course and along the south side of Greenway Drive across from the tee on #15. With the removal of the blackberries and miscellaneous trees we were able to have Medford Irrigation District do some very necessary cleaning and repair to the irrigation ditch. It has been close to 40 years since MID has cleaned and repaired our section of the ditch.

As time allows we are working on the edging of cart paths on the Oaks Course. We have completed the rais-ing, leveling and sod replacement of the irrigation heads and valve boxes on the collars of the greens. All of the areas on the collars of the greens that had thin turf have also been repaired with sod. With spring just around the corner we are asking everyone to please repair your ball marks, replace your divots or use the sand and seed that is provided to fill your excavation site. Please check in with the pro shop before starting your round of golf, you never know when we may be RED flag or certain holes are closed. I am well aware that FROST delays are not enjoyable for you. Believe me, we the mainte-nance staff and the pro shop staff do not enjoy them either. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns. Thank you and good luck golfing on YOUR golf course.

Spring Tour Pro Am ComingOur annual Spring Tour Pro Am will be held April 11 and 12 this year. Our major sponsor this year is again PremierWest Bank. We need more sponsors to help defray the costs of the event and to support the charities that are associated with the Pro Am. If you are interested in sponsoring or playing, call the Golf Shop and let us know. The format is five-man teams of one professional and four amateurs paired together for prizes in team, individual gross and net. The entry fee for members is $85 per day and $100 per day for non-members. The prize pot will end up being around $30,000 for the two days with a full field. The entry blanks are already posted on the PGA web site so contact your favorite Golf Professional and encourage him to play in this year’s event. We will have a 1pm shotgun on Monday and a 9am shotgun on Tuesday with a hosted hors d’oeuvres party on Monday evening following the golf. Also on the schedule is a putting contest on the main putting green prior to starting on Monday.

Private Cart Numbers and StickersWith all the private carts in use and all our new members the last couple of years, we have noticed some carts without the mandatory numbers and stickers. If you have not registered your cart to receive the numbers and stickers, please stop by the Golf Shop and we will issue numbers and stickers and register your cart. The trail fee for the year is $350 and it runs from July 1 through June 30. Carts coming on other times are prorated to those dates. Thank you.

Food & Beverage Corner By Elizabeth CruzWow, what a football season! I would like to start off by thanking everyone who made Sunday Night Football a success. Congratula-tions to all of the raffle winners and those who had their names drawn and a BIG Congratulation to Thad Hodgdon who won the Super Bowl Sunday Drawing and received a $500 credit. Don’t miss the next upcoming season, which will be March Madness starting on Tuesday, March 15. Come and join the fun at your club. And a note about our Crab Crack... the turnout was fantastic with over 250 crab lovers in attendance. Oregon is know for its incredible Dungeness... make plans now for next January to “crab-out” with us!

And…As a ReminderFor those who don’t know, the club has an off sale license, so you can purchase wine from our wine list by the case for cost plus 10%. Just give me a call to place an order at 541-772-5965 x 104. Also, due to the high volume of orders for our February wine of the month, pick up times will be on Fridays from 2pm-4pm. If you have any questions, don’t hesi-tate to call or stop by and see me. I am here for YOU, our mem-bership and to help make the club be-come YOUR club.

Around The Club...

First Hole-In-One This Year!Congratulations to Bob Plankenhorn. Bob scored a hole-in-one on January 20, with a 6-iron on hole #9. It was witnessed by Steve Lavin and Dusty Kline.

Hole-In-One ClubAs spring approaches, we want to remind all members of the club about the RVCC Hole-In-One Club. There are two separate pots, one for men and one for women. The Club is voluntary and that allows the members to have some funds to buy drinks in the bar following their ace on the course. It costs $2 to join and each member of the HIO club is billed $2 when a hole-in-one is made by a member of the HIO club. At that same time, the lucky acer’s club account is credited with the amount of money equal to the number of members in the respective HIO pot. There are presently about 150 men and 100 women in each pot. Let someone in the Golf Shop know if you are interested in joining. We had close to 20 aces in 2010. Maybe it’s your turn to have one this year?
