What can Clover Contribute? Increased protein production
Provides up to 150kg/ha of free nitrogen
Increased Summer yield and drought tolerance
Improved intake
Improved mineral profile of herbage
Enhance the wildlife habitat
What is Clover Worth Today? The big benefit of Clover is its ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen and make it available to companion grasses. If your sward contains one third White Clover it is likely that after the initial 6 month establishment phase, a total of 150-200kg/ ha/yr of nitrogen will be provided by these plants. Straight 34.5% Ammonium Nitrate is currently being sold on farm at £280/tonne (£0.82/kilo).This means that Clover is providing £123.00-164.00 worth of nitrogen per hectare to your crops.
Red CloverRed Clover usually lasts for 3 years and is used mainly in cutting mixtures. Yields over the 3 years can average out at 13 tonnes of dry matter per hectare. Red Clover is assailed by eelworm and Sclerotinia (Clover Rot); Oliver’s “Red Clover” blend consists of varieties that are resistant to both.
White CloverWhite Clovers can be: small, medium, large or very large in leaf size.
Small leaved are best for intensive sheep grazing due to their creeping growth habit and extreme persistence.
Medium leaved are tolerant to most situations and a mainstay in mixtures used for grazing.
Large leaved are usually for silage and cattle grazing use.
Very large leaved are higher yielding but less hardy and persistent, they are best used for silage or hay leys.

7Clover Blends and Lucerne
Mixtures of Clover varieties have been developed which satisfy the varying needs of the grower. Oliver Seeds promote three WHITE CLOVER BLENDS:
CUTTINg BLEND – A large leaved Clover blend chosen to compete with Perennial Ryegrass in fast growing swards receiving limited nitrogen. Ideal for cutting and cattle grazing regimes
DUAL PURPOSE BLEND – A combination of large, medium and small cultivars that will adapt under dual purpose management to provide high protein and mineral rich forage under either sheep or cattle grazing
gRAZINg BLEND – As the name implies, the focus is on small and medium leaved Clovers to excel under intensive livestock regimes especially sheep grazing
…and one RED CLOVER BLEND:
RED CLOVER BLEND – This is a very high yielding, high protein blend that is very vigorous in establishment and growth. Very good persistency and eelworm resistance ensure maximum output where RED CLOVER BLEND is used in short to medium term leys
LucerneA deep rooted, perennial legume, Lucerne is ideally suited to light, free draining soils with a pH of 7. The plants usually have a protein content of around 18% and their higher fibre levels complement items like maize silage in a ration. Lucerne has a very good yield potential of 13 tonnes of dry matter/ha/year over the first 2 years.
The crop is usually sown between April and August at a depth of 1cm and a rate of 8-10 kilos per acre. The thicker the sowing rate, the thinner the stems.
Lucerne is usually treated as a 5 year conservation crop and cut 3-4 times. It is important to leave a minimum 10cm stubble to speed regrowth and not scalp the plant.
Our variety “Luzelle” will tolerate rotational grazing and features in the specialist Landmark Lucerne & Grass mix on page 19.
All our Lucerne seed is now pre treated with inoculum for ease of drilling and maximum efficiency.

8 Organic Grass Seed
Oliver Seeds are very proactive on the organic grass front and are pleased to be able to offer ORgANIC alternatives to OUR TOTAL RANgE of conventional grass seed mixtures.
The constituents of these mixtures will vary from the conventional range printed in this brochure.
We are also able to formulate specific mixtures to meet individual requirements as necessary.
The minimum amount of ORgANIC grass seed in a mix has been set at 70% for 2015.
We are also usually able to offer ORgANIC seed of many of our other products or where this is not available, untreated seed (derogation required).

9Overseeding and Pasture Renovation
Large seeded, aggressive species are essential for overseeding to succeed. Oliver Seeds have a range of mixtures suitable to cover all situations but there is a new dedicated mix specifically formulated for maximum effect:
Typhoon Overseeding Mixture NEW FORMULATION
Ideal for surface or slot seeding, the components involved are primarily Hybrid and Tetraploid Ryegrasses to facilitate rapid establishment and accelerated growth.
Dedicated mix for specific purpose
Cost effective and productive
Sow at 7 – 10kgs per acre
Also available with 12% Dual Purpose White Clover blend included
There is great interest in using specific mixtures to overseed pasture in order to boost production. This avoids the cost of conventional cultivation and re-seeding and is an excellent solution where shallow soils or stony conditions prevent traditional sowing. Oliver Seeds publish guidelines on several methods available for your use; copies of these guidelines are available on request.

10 Catch Crop Ryegrass
Catch crop Ryegrass for cutting and grazing
Tornado “The ultimate catch crop!”
Sowing Rate 12.5 – 15.0kg/acre TORNADO is supplied in 20kg bags
Tornado is based on a persistent, multicut, Westerwold and two Italian Ryegrasses which combine outstanding yield in the establishment year plus extraordinary Spring growth and first cut yield.
Tornado can grow very fast; to get the best results it needs to be managed carefully. The relatively open nature of its growth means that cutting or tight rotational grazing best suits the mixture.
If seedbed conditions are good 12.5kg/acre is adequate, especially if the crop is to be ploughed up after first cut.
If the Tornado is required for a full 12 months of production or regular, hard, Winter grazing, a 15.0kg/acre seed rate is recommended.
Tornado is also available mixed with Winfred rape as Raptor to produce flexible Summer and Autumn grazing, see page 34.
Trials show an extra £148.00 worth of silage in just 6 months(based on an extra 3.7 tonnes of 25% dry matter silage @ £40/tonne).
Top yield potential for both Autumn and Spring production
Excellent potential for grazing and Autumn silage after Winter Barley
Very vigorous establishment for sowing after maize
33% Diploid content for higher dry matter Spring silage
Better lamb finishing potential than stubble turnips, with assured re-growth
“Seriously fast grass!”
11Short - Medium Term Mixtures
Mower cutting heightsIt is important to set the mower height correctly for every field especially where fields are uneven. Tootling along with one end of the mower bed ploughing a furrow whilst the other end stays airborne will not guarantee your future employment or the yield and quality of your crop! Seriously, cutting too low (less than 7cm) and “scalping” not only slows regrowth but also can kill plants thereby seriously shortening sward life and output. Whoever undertakes the mowing should be made aware of this especially where big machines are used and mower tolerance levels less flexible.
We would advocate a minimum cutting height of 10cm for most grass swards.

Sabre Hi-Pro
Balancing grass and CloverClover as a species can be very aggressive when Spring sown, especially Red Clover. This can prevent grass plants establishing as well as they should with a consequent imbalance in the resultant sward. Our Hi-Pro mixtures contain less Clover seed in the Spring than in the Autumn, therefore, the balance is controlled for you from the start.

13Hi-Pro Red Clover Variants
Red Clover mixtures for higher protein and reduced nitrogen inputThe advantages of Red Clover are not always realised but in summary, offer three times the yield of a large leaved White Clover. This yield comes at a cost however, as the species is not as persistent as White Clover and is therefore best used in 2-4 year leys. A long, penetrating tap root allows Red Clover to withstand drought and be suited to lighter soils.
When used in a seed mix with Ryegrass, the table below illustrates how the Red Clover sustains or enhances the yield of the sward in year two.
