FA IR PROJECT IDEA

Greenhouse gases are gases in the Earth'satmosphere that trap heat. They letsunlight pass through the atmosphere, butthey prevent the heat that sunlight bringsfrom leaving the atmosphere.

WHAT ARE GREENHOUSE

GASES ?

DIRECTIONS Solar OvenS'mores

Step 2

Glue aluminum foil, shiny side out, to thebottom of the flap, keeping it as wrinkle-free as possible.

Step 6Place your ovenoutdoors in directsunlight. Use a stickor dowel to prop thebox open at the anglethat reflects the mostsunlight into the box.Within an hour orsooner the chocolateand marshmallowsshould melt enoughto assemble into as'more.

Step 3Glue another piece of foil to the insidebottom of the box. Then place blackconstruction paper on the top of thefoil.

Step 1On the top of the box, draw a square that isan inch smaller than the lid all the way around. Use a craft knife (adults only) to cut throughhe cardboard along three sides, and then foldthe cardboard up along the uncut line to forma flap.

Step 5For each s'more, center two graham crackerson the construction paper. Top one withchocolate and the other with marshmallow.

Step 4Tape clear plasticwrap to the undersideof the lid to seal theopening created bythe flap. For bestresults, the sealshould be as airtightas possible.

Engaging Questions

Why do you think it takes so longto cook s'mores in the sun vs. ata campfire?

What are some recipes youcould make using your solarpowered oven?

How would different types ofweather change your results?

Dramatic Play

Encourage dramatic play andcamping indoors. Use cardboard, cotton balls, and brown felt as propsto create s'mores. Paper towel rollsand red, yellow, and green tissuepaper to be used to design an indoorcampfire.

Lesson ExtensionsDecorate your solar poweredoven to make it unique!Try making s'mores with another type of candy bar. Compare melting times.Solar ovens come in manyshapes and sizes. Experimentwith different types of boxes. What design cooks the fastest?

How does it work?

The foil flap gathers sunlight and reflects itthrough the plastic and into the oven, doubling the amount of incoming light. Theblack paper absorbs the light and convertsit to heat, and the clear plastic allows thesun to shine in while keeping the heat fromescaping. As more light hits the blackpaper, more heat is created and trapped. After an hour on a sunny day, the oven canbe as hot as 275 degrees, hot enough tomelt chocolate and marshmallows!
