4-H LIVESTOCK NEWS

Fair Entry Deadline for ALL ANIMALS! *All entries are due by Friday, July 17 at https://plymouthiowa.fairentry.com! *Absolutely NO late entries accepted! *DO NOT USE INTERNET EXPLORER FOR ANYTHING AND NO WWW IN FRONT OF THE LINK

4-H Dog Project Clinics Continue

All animals must be entered for the fair at https://plymouthiowa.fairentry.com! FFA members should turn in paper entry forms by July 17th or those animals will not be able to exhibit. You will only be able to enter the maximum number allowed. At check-in you can substitute a different identified animal or move to a different class within that division (Ex. Market to Carcass). You can’t however bring more animals and you can’t go between a breeding class and a market class. The class must be determined on the July 17th entry as well

as if you are showing an animal as a crossbred or purebred. Entries tell us how many animals you will be bringing that we need stall assignments for! Entry instructions can be found on our website! Remember that once you submit an invoice for entry you can’t log in and create another invoice until I approve the previous entry. I’ve been doing that daily…we have in 200 entries already! If something doesn’t seem to be working properly please contact the Extension Office and let us know.

4-H Horse Project Clinics Continue

All dog project members are encouraged to attend the dog project clinics that will help them prepare for the fair. Clinics are on Monday nights beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Fairgrounds. If it’s raining in Le Mars there will be no dog class. Listen to KLEM 1410 for weather related announcements. Remember to not feed your dog before coming to class, bring water for both you and your dog, dress appropriately (no flip-flops), and parents are

welcome to stay so bring your lawn chair but don’t park under the trees as that’s where the kids and dogs will work! Be sure to attend the July 13th class as Kate will assist you in which dog classes to enter in. Don’t forget she has also set up a Facebook page as a place to communicate better, especially for weather announcements. Search for Plymouth County 4-H Dog Project!

4-H Horse Clinics are held on Thursday nights at the LeMars Fairgrounds Arena. They start at 7:00 p.m. and finish around 8:30 p.m. In case of inclement weather, a decision will be made by 6 pm. Contact Jenny 712-490-9211 or Sheila 712-239-6115 with weather related questions. Members should bring their horses to each clinic if possible! No minimum attendance is required. Helmets need to be worn at all times! If you missed the Horse Project meeting we have that information available at the Extension Office! Also, please keep in mind that the fairgrounds arena is not for personal riding use. 4-H insurance only covers you during scheduled 4-H sponsored events, Saddle Club insurance only covers during those sponsored events and the Fairboard insurance is for other scheduled events. None of these organizations are responsible for you on your personal time so they are asking that you not use the arena outside of these scheduled events. So on 4-H Horse clinic nights, you cannot come early to ride on your own, you may begin warming up when the approved 4-H volunteers arrive. Clinic Schedule: July 9: Western Riding (Specific Patterns & Lead changes) July 16: Reining July 23: Trail (Obstacles set up in arena )

Herdsmanship

4-H and FFA members are reminded that there are judges that come through the livestock buildings daily. They will be scoring clubs in cleanliness of the animals, how well organized the stalls are, and if there are members present to greet fairgoers.

Please do your part to make sure your animals and stalls are in good shape. If your animals have water buckets in the pens/cages, please make sure they stay filled especially on really hot days.

Clay Co. Livestock Entry Deadline BEFORE OUR FAIR! This year you must make your Clay County Fair livestock entry with our office by Friday, July 24 before 4:30 p.m. as they need to be at the Clay County office during our fair! We will be moving the Extension office to the Fairgrounds on Thursday afternoon and will be open at the Fair Office from

8:00-4:30 on Friday to complete your entry.

ENTRIES DUE FRIDAY, JULY 24 BY 4:30 P.M.

Fairs & Care of Livestock Exhibitors are reminded that providing adequate care and proper handling for their animals at the upcoming fair is very important. We have discussed this at FSQA training and now is the time to put those practices in place. Exhibitors are reminded to provide adequate feed and water for all animals at all times, fans as needed, clean bedding and proper removal of manure as advised by the Plymouth County Fairboard. Also read the 2015 Health Requirements for Exhibition of Livestock, Poultry and Birds at a County 4-H/FFA Show. Youth exhibitors are advised by the Fairboard and

Extension staff to answer basic questions about their animal project from a fair attendee they do not know, but if they feel the questioning is not normal and they feel threatened by the level of questioning they should find an adult (department superintendent, fairboard member, 4-H leader, or Extension staff) to help provide answers to the individual asking the questions. 4-H & FFA youth are advised to not talk to the media unless an adult is also present. If you have any questions about your animals’ care prior to the fair, please talk to the superintendent, or the Extension staff.

Fair Ribbon Auction Exhibitors that have market beef, market sheep,

market swine, meat goats, market broilers or fryer rabbits may sign up one animal to go through the ribbon auction that is held on

Monday, August 3 beginning at 9:00 a.m. You must sign up at the fair office no later than Saturday, August 1, 6:00 p.m.

Ak-Sar-Ben Livestock Entry Deadline

The deadline to sign up for Ak-Sar-Ben is Monday, August 10th. Those entries can be made at the Fair Office on that Monday after the fair or at

the Extension Office after the office is moved back to the Extension Office location.

Lost 4-H Tags If your animal loses their 4-H ear tag, please contact the Extension Office at 546-7835. A 4-H & Youth member will be contacted to go to your farm and replace the tag. When you call to report a lost tag,

please let us know if the animal that lost the tag was verified at weigh-in for the Iowa State Fair or Ak-Sar-Ben.

If you will be in grades 10-12 in the fall please consider joining the County Council. If you missed the June meeting, there is still time to join! We will be having a fun outing to Karttrax Family Fun Park in Yankton on Monday, July 13. Transportation will be provided and we are looking for adult chaperones to assist with this. We will meet in the Extension Office parking lot and leave at 3:00 p.m. After all the fun is had we will enjoy a cookout in Vermillion on the way home. It’s a great

way to meet 4-H’ers from across the county and be a leader in Plymouth County 4-H! We will need to get a head count so call the Extension Office (712-546-7835) or email Ann at [email protected] by July 8. The event is free to all! I hope to see lots of new faces! New members must complete an Interest form (found on our website) and must commit by July 17. No members will join after this date! If you can’t make it to the outing and want to join, please contact Ann and let her know!

4-H Pride of Iowa Contest

4-H Clothing Event Those of you that turned in Clothing Event forms will receive a letter in the mail that includes all the details for judging day! Don’t forget that judging day is Tuesday, July 14 at the Extension Office. You will then need to take part in the style show at the fair on Wednesday, July

29 at 12:00 p.m. We can help make arrangements for those rabbit exhibitors to go out of order or we can get you your ribbon after the show if you can’t make it to the style show.

It is so good to see so many Pride of Iowa entries turned in. Don’t forget that we get those recipes reviewed by our ISU Food Specialist and then we will send those comments back you. Pride of Iowa will be held after Bill Riley Show on Sunday again so we will be able to be better organized and have more room to spread out. A schedule will be mailed to you when we get your recipes

back from the Food Specialist! Please note the change in the schedule for the event this year! We are trying to make it less chaotic! 2:45-3:00 p.m. – Everyone sets up 3:00-3:45 p.m. – Judging (no parents or public present) 3:45-4:15 p.m. – Public served (one door in and one out) 4:15 p.m. - Awards

Fairgrounds Clean Up and Mud Volleyball! Each year our 4-H’ers help prepare the grounds for

the fair or help tear down after the fair. Half of the clubs are assigned to clean up before the fair on Monday, July 27 beginning at 9:00 a.m. The other half will come on Wednesday, August 5 beginning at 5:30 p.m. to clean up. Members are asked to sign in on the sheet at the water fountain. Ice cream treats are served up when all the work is done. Club leaders have your assigned time. It would be a good idea to bring brooms, gloves, buckets, rags, etc. to help get

the job done! If you can’t help at your club’s assigned time, please consider helping on the opposite day.

We will be playing mud volleyball after fair clean up on Wednesday. One stipulation is that if you want to play you must be a 4-H or FFA member or volunteer & must have helped with clean up! We’ll even serve up some treats while you are playing! If you don’t want to play it is entertaining to watch! Nobody gets in until staff are present and have okayed it!

Blair House

Don’t forget that the Kingsley Patriots and Plywood Busters will each be featured clubs in the Blair House this year. You will need to put together a small display about your club. Maybe you have a

community service project you would like to display. You may set this up anytime Monday or Tuesday of fair week. Just let Jill know so the doors can be unlocked.

Foodstand Information

Your leader has your club’s assigned time to work in the food stand. If you cannot work your club’s time please let your leader know as there are other clubs that could use your help. We will have three managers and the stand will stay open until 11:00 p.m. each night unless there’s no one left on the grounds! Your leader will have more details for you. All families are expected to work! Please come in clean clothes and clean ball caps!

No one under 14 is allowed to work inside the stand! Pies must be at least 8 inches and no cream pies! You will not be able to hold whole pies back to purchase at the end of your shift. Remember our entire 4-H program is run on funds made in the Food Stand. Scholarships for trips and the $30 fee/member is paid for in part by the 4-H Food Stand, Extension Council, and Fairboard. We need every family to do their part to help!

Entering 4-H Exhibits at the Fair *DON’T USE INTERNET EXPLORER AND NO WWW IN FRONT OF THE LINK

All static exhibits will be entered on https://plymouthiowa.fairentry.com. We want you to enter only the exhibits you are bringing. When it asks for a description we need a specific description of what the exhibit looks like so an entry tag can be directly matched to the exhibit. We encourage members to have static exhibits entered online by noon on Friday, July 24. This will make check in faster for you. All of your entry tags will be printed and you can pick them up at the check in table. If you have other exhibits that you complete over the weekend, just wait to enter those with staff when you arrive on Monday! Those entry tags will then be printed that evening and available for you to pick up on Tuesday before you judge. All 4-H exhibits MUST be checked in, in the 4-H

building from 2:00-6:00 p.m. on Monday, July 27! Please bring your goal sheets attached and completed. It is best to put goal sheets and other papers in a plastic sleeve and attach with a safety pin or binder ring. The 4-H Building will be closed at 6:00 p.m. so you need to have them entered by then. Horticulture and Baked goods may be brought in on Tuesday, but goal sheets must be checked in on Monday. The entry committee will be set up in the north end of the 4-H Building.

*Please note that Photography exhibits are displayed in a separate display area. Leave your photos in your club booth on Monday. Then after you have them judged leave in the tote at your booth. *Please do not tack, tape or staple anything to the walls in the 4-H Building!

*If a member has a large exhibit they need to contact Ann at the Extension Office prior to the fair. No large exhibits will be unloaded in the 4-H Building without a staff member present so that it gets displayed in the correct area.

Judging 4-H Exhibits Judging day for 4-H exhibits will take place on Tuesday,

July 28 beginning at 8:00 a.m. Club leaders have your assigned judging time. If you have more than five exhibits, please start judging first thing in the morning. Judges will not wait for someone once their area is completed. Don’t forget to stop at the Entry table to pick up the master list of your exhibits. This will be taken to the judge so a ribbon can be recorded. These need to be turned back in when you are finished judging. Parents may help carry exhibits to Century Hall but cannot go in. County Council members will be available to help carry

exhibits. Also bring several exhibits to Century Hall with you...we have a holding area. It will save time going back and forth. Parents and leaders may stay in the 4-H Building during conference judging. They are not allowed in Century Hall at all! When the judges come over to the 4-H Building to begin making their State Fair selections, ALL PARENTS AND LEADERS NOT ON THE COMMITTEE MUST LEAVE THE BUILDING. YOU MAY FINISH ORGANIZING YOUR BOOTH ON WEDNESDAY. Once an exhibit is judged, stop at the table in the 4-H Building to get the ribbon scanned!

Bucket of Flowers Clubs are encouraged to enter a bucket of flowers for competition at the 2015 Plymouth County Fair. You must use a 5 gallon bucket. A complete set of rules are listed in the fairbook. Entries should be brought to the 4-H Building on Monday from 2-6 p.m. or on Tuesday during judging by noon. A horticulture judge

will choose the top three. These three clubs will receive a premium. All buckets will be distributed throughout the fairgrounds for the duration of the fair. We ask that someone from your club be responsible for WATERING YOUR DISPLAY AND PICKING UP your bucket on Monday, August 2.

Ag Quiz Bowl

The Iowa Corn Growers will be hosting an Ag Quiz Bowl at the fair this year! There will be NICE cash prizes awarded! Only three teams will get to compete so get a team organized and signed up fast! Teams must consist of five teammates. Four of them must be members that are 8th-12th grade and the fifth must be an adult from a local business! It will take place on

Friday at the fair in Century Hall (time TBD-late morning). There will be multiple choice, short answer, and essay questions! Teams may go to different commodity websites to study facts. Examples would be the Iowa Pork Producers, Iowa Cattleman’s, Iowa Soybean, Turkey Association, Egg Council, etc. Call the Extension Office to sign your team up now!

Crop Project

Members that are enrolled in the Crop Project need to contact Joel DeJong at our office to schedule a time he will meet with you in your field to do a conference judging. The main emphasis will be to learn what is involved in preparing a seed bed, planting, growing,

and harvesting a crop. Members need not do all the work, but are expected to have an active role. If you haven’t already, go to our website and there is a worksheet you will need to complete for the judging.

Communications Entries

As you are preparing exhibits take note to the fairbook to make sure you meet all the requirements! Your food recipes are surely amazing, but are they safe in a fair environment? Call the Answerline number in the fairbook with your recipe and they will tell you! Did you use Pinterest to get an idea? Make sure you state the source…do NOT put Pinterest! Go to our website to see the three simple steps in locating the

original source of that idea! Remember when using quotes, logos, etc. if they are not your original work, you must give credit where credit is due! In some cases you must get permission to use certain items! If you are unsure, please check with the Extension Office or our Youth Specialist, Brenda Welch and she’ll help you figure it out! Email her at [email protected].

Copyright, Pinterest, and Foods!

INTRODUCING THE 2015 POULTRY SHOW These classes will all be listed in Fair Entry. It will be most helpful to sign up for them by the July 17 livestock deadline so enough materials and space can be determined! Since you were able to previously enter 15 birds, we have come up with 10 classes and 5 games you could enter and earn ribbons and awards! Any of the projects you complete for these classes must be checked in on Wednesday, July 29 between 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. and you can sign up for the games on Wednesday until 7:00 p.m. Starting at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 1, during the normal Poultry Show time, members and Clover Buddies should be present in the Poultry barn. A judge will be present to conduct the showmanship portion as well as award ribbons and trophies to the other classes! 4-H/FFA CLASSES: 100: Cage Decorating

Exhibitors will be assigned a two-hole cage. The entire unit should be decorated which may include stuffed poultry animals in one of the holes. A 15” x 22”poster will need to be created to hang over the other hole. It must include at least one photo of your flock with you in the photo, information on how you care for your flock and what you feed them, what breeds you have, and some facts about that breed. Each exhibitor will earn a ribbon after the judge reviews the display. Exhibitors will be grouped by club. An overall “herdsmanship” award will be given to the club with the most creative display determined by the judge.

110: Showmanship Showmanship will be done by a paper quiz during the show time. The judge may ask additional questions to determine a champion showman. Trophies will be awarded to the Champion and Reserve in each of the three levels. 110.1: Senior Showmanship; 110.2: Intermediate Showmanship; 110.3 Junior Showmanship

120: Educational Poster Exhibitors may enter up to two posters on any poultry related topic. The poster needs to be 15’ x 22” and references/resources for where you got your information needs to be sited on the poster.

130: Costume Contest Exhibitors will design a costume as they have in the past. Exhibitors will submit and 8 x 10 photo of the bird/exhibitor and the costume.

140: Recipe Contest Exhibitors may enter one recipe that includes eggs or chicken. The recipe should be typed on and 8 ½ x 11 page and then include a photo of the finished product.

150: Wooden Chicken Painting Exhibitors will be given a wooden chicken to paint in the poultry barn on Wednesday and Thursday. Exhibitors may work on this anytime during these two days. Chickens will then be displayed and ribbons will be awarded on Saturday during the show.
