UW-Extension Ashland County 4-H Program Spring 2019
CLOVER CONNECTION
Dear 4-H Families, Winter is long in the North-woods, and that left a lot of time for a host of 4-H events to take place in the past few months! The Dairy Breakfast was well attended. Thanks to all who helped make that hap-pen! We had a record number of kids at the Mid-Winter Geta-way (see inside for pictures), all made possible by 25 volun-teers and one canine help-er. Special thanks to the Rezberries for their strong role in planning and making the event successful! 4-H CANSKI wrapped up its regulars season with an on-snow party and year-end shin-dig that over 100 members at-tended. Archery wrapped up another strong series and is al-ready planning for the summer session. Northland College signed on to help with our Out-door Adventure Leadership Club, which is meeting weekly
throughout the year now. 4-H is co-sponsoring a new after school program (middle and high school) that will run throughout the year and already has broad participation – a needed program and exciting collaborative effort! Our 4-H Ambassadors spoke to 15 3rd – 5th grade classrooms at the beginning of May and they did an excellent presentation. Be on the lookout for new members looking for a club home and make sure to welcome them in. Lastly, clubs county-wide have run doz-ens of activities and club events that are all rooted in the four principles of positive youth de-velopment: belonging, mastery, independence, and generosity. Our club leaders held their annu-al training on May 6th. We looked at what research says about how we in 4-H build assets in youth, and shared ideas over pizza. Last Friday was the annual Spring Contest with Lego art, some great open mic performanc-
es and the taste of southern Barbecue to bring summer in. It was a full house and a lot of fun with friends at the NGLVC. Events like these only happen because of the continued en-thusiastic participation of our great 4-H members! We are looking forward to a busy summer of activities. Camp counselor aps are mostly in, and we are looking forward to holding our traditional 3 day summer camp this year at Northwood Girl Scout Camp facility near Delta (Saturday, June 29 – Monday, July 1). The theme is Hawaiian – get your Hula, surf and luau on! Elementary Adventure Days day-camps for 2nd-5th grade youth are scheduled (see page 4). Archery details and a late spring riflery series (May 21, 28 & June 4) have information inside these pages too. Letter Continued on page 3...

Doug’s Letter (Continued…)
A note to the Ashland County 4-H High School Seniors, Bella Wabindato & Avantika D’Cruz, we wish you a fantastic spring as you graduate and look toward the future! We have youth headed to State 4-H Youth Conference in Madison in June and one to Washington D.C. This summer 4-H is co-sponsoring a Hiking Club again this year with Ashland Park & Rec.
The County Fair (Aug 15-18) will be here before we know it! Clubs, if you need support or programming by me or our office this summer, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. As we hit the warmer months, don’t forget as a family to “Get out and stay out!” – outside that is… Garden, walk, sports, fishing, or read a book under a tree.
Be well!-
Outdoor Adventure Leadership It’s finally here! Spring is within reach and the Outdoor Adventure
Leadership Club is LOVING IT! We are very excited to get exploring
in the beautiful (non-snowy) weather. Throughout the last few
months students have been learning and practicing new skills to
help them be prepared for our summertime activities. During
March students learned the basics of climbing at the Northland Col-
lege rock wall. They experienced everything from putting a harness
on, tying knots, and even belaying each other up the rock wall! The
students are eager to get outside and use their skills to see what
real rock feels like here in the north woods! Throughout April, stu-
dents began to master the use of map and compass, and are ready
to take on the orienteering course and navigate the wilderness.
Have no fear, spots are still available to join us on our
May adventure! We are exploring the local area for
the best hiking spots around while identifying com-
mon wildflowers and visiting some awe-inspiring
waterfalls. As the weather ramps up so does the
Outdoor Adventure Leadership Club!
See you on the trails!
For more information or to join in the Outdoor Adventure Leader-
ship Club activities this spring and summer contact Taylor Hansen:

best counselors ever and I got to
do amazing things, and I got the
best top bunk.
Swimming was AWESOME, kayaking
was AWESOME. It was all AWE-

provides accident insurance for all 4-H members while participating in a scheduled 4-H club or
project meeting.
What is the coverage provided by this insurance? The American Income Life Policy
provides up to $2,500 for any injury that is sustained during a 4-H program. If an injury takes
place during a 4-H event, you should immediately contact the 4-H office and provide the
necessary information to submit a claim.
Am I covered under this policy if I am a 4-H Leader? Only 4-H Leader’s who have requested
to be included by the accident insurance policy and paid $1.00 are covered. If you would like to
receive this coverage or double check that you requested accident insurance, call the UW-

ness, eyeglass replacement, suicide, aviation accidents, hernia in any form, loss covered under
Medicare, injuries sustained while downhill skiing, tobogganing, bobsledding, or snow tubing.

activities are: downhill skiing, tobogganing, sledding or tubing.

out to provide insurance 4-H leaders and parents who are participating in a recognized 4-H
event. To apply for this additional 4-H event coverage, you can call the Extension Office.
