General 4-H News

Page 7: Clover Chronicles · Includes all animal, Fashion Day and ommunications Day entries July 1 Iowa State Fair Entries Due Includes all livestock, small animal and horticulture entries

We have received notification that black flies are harming large numbers of chickens and other poultry in Boone County. According to ISU Extension and Out-reach entomologist Laura Iles, the population does seem to be most concentrated in Boone County based on the calls she has received. Black flies, also known as buffalo gnats and turkey gnats, are small, blood-sucking insects slightly less than 1/4 inch long with a stout-body and hump-backed appearance. The adult flies are usually present for about 3 weeks before they die. Assistant State Veterinarian Dr. Jeff Kaisand confirmed they have received cases of chickens dying from black flies. Kaisand recommends that poultry owners and producers protect the animals by keeping them in-doors or inside netting. Keeping air moving around the animals will also help as the flies are more active in still air. Kaisand also reminded animal owners and veteri-narians to report any potential foreign animal disease concerns to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship. For more information on black flies visit https://hortnews.extension.iastate.edu/black-fly

GAGA BALL PIT—NEED HELP The Bluff Creek Wranglers 4-H Club is building a GAGA Ball pit at the Boone County Fairgrounds by the mud volleyball pit. The Bluff Creek Wranglers applied for a $400 Pioneer Grant, but only received $200, because many other clubs applied for grants as well. The Bluff Creek Wranglers are requesting club assistance in donating the cost of a board or two to help with the GAGA Ball pit. The boards that are needed are 12 – 2x12x16 which cost $30 from Menards and 6 – 1x16x12 that cost around $7. The Fairbaord will be donating the sand and Boone County 4-H will be donating the balls. If your club wants to help out and donate the cost of a board or more, please let Natalie know. 515-432-3882 Thanks.

1. What did you plan to learn or do? (What was your exhibit goal(s)?)

2. What steps did you take to learn or do this? Explain what you did so it is easily understood. The judge wants to know and understand the steps you used to make your exhibit.
