WG Objectives

• To establish a standard format and mechanism for the interoperable virtual appliance marketplace for the cloud applications

• Deploying applications and services in standards-compliant environment avoids vendor lock-in and enables “AppStore” for Cloud applications and services.

WG Work Items

• Identify a set of applications for deploying into clouds.

• Analyze selected applications (OS, CPU, memory, network, storage, configurations, and database).

• Define OVF for applications.• Deploy applications into specified cloud

infrastructures. • Prepare the guidelines for utilizing OVF.

3

Page 4: Cloud Computing WG (initiative in AFACT) Institute For Information Industry.

WG Deliverables

• Define OVF for selected applications• Pilot projects packaged for deploying virtual

appliance into cloud using OVF• Guidelines for utilizing OVF

WG Status

• There are 4 country members have expressed interests in joining the WG– Chinese Taipei (Garry Lee, Deputy Director General, III):

investigate cloud computing technology – Thailand (Wanawit Ahkuputra, Deputy Executive Director):

provide application for migration– Korea (Young Kon Lee, Korea Polytechnic University):

investigate cloud computing technology– There are also other interesting parties would like to

provide applications for investigations when available (e.g. Akio Suzuki, TT&L WG from Japan)

Virtual Appliance

• A pre-configured software stack comprising one or more virtual systems – Each virtual system is an independently installable run-

time entity • an operating system • applications and application-specific data • metadata describing the virtual hardware that is

required by the virtual system.

• Delivering complex software systems and services as a pre-configured software stack can dramatically increase robustness and simplify installation

New Distribution Paradigm

• Virtual appliances are changing the software distribution paradigm – they allow optimization of the software stack for

the specific application – deliver a turnkey service to the end user.

• For solution providers, building a virtual appliance is simpler and more cost effective than building a hardware appliance.

VM Images for Runtime Only

• VM images are virtualization technology specific– VMware's VMDK Virtual Disk Format – Microsoft's VHD Virtual Hard Disk format– Open source QCOW format.

• VM images can not support virtual appliance – A virtual system that has multiple disks, or multiple virtual

systems, or they need customization of the virtual system during installation

– An application needs multiple VMs, and the deployment system needs extra info (e.g., network, configuration, start up / stop sequence, etc.)

OVF Enables Virtual Appliance Ecosystem

• If the application designer deploys the application into virtual system (cloud) to build the virtual appliance – Then they know how to configure the application– In this case, VM images only should be OK

• But if the 3rd party designed the application, and for any other person to deploy– In this case, OVF is required to capture all the

designer knowledge into the package for the application deployment.
