What are the Benefits of Cloud Computing?

 Efficiency– Improved Asset Utilization

– Aggregated Demand and Accelerated system consolidation

– Improved Productivity in application development

Agility– Purchase “as a service” from trusted cloud providers

– Near instantaneous increase/decreases in capacity

– More responsive to urgent needs

Innovation– Shift focus from asset ownership to service management

– Tap in to private sector innovation

– Encourages entrepreneurial culture

– Better linked to emerging technologies (e.g. devices)

Transitioning beyond Virtualization to Cloud

Private Cloud: behind the firewall of an enterprise, closed to public

Public Cloud: accessible via service providers for general purchase

Hybrid Cloud: private clouds linked to public clouds

Hybrid Cloud

“The cloud infrastructure is a composition of two or more clouds (private, community, or public) that remain unique entities but are

bound together by standardized or proprietary technology that enables data and application portability (e.g., cloud bursting for

load-balancing between clouds).

Optimize your services Answer key questions to

delivering business value– What do we have and

where is it?– What’s causing my

performance problem?– What’s the impact of

change?

Understand what services are being used by who– Show utilization metrics

back to your users– Enable showback or

chargeback

CDMI

Page 29: Cloud Computing Means Efficient IT | GSF 2012 | Session 3-4

What is CDMI?

An interface for interoperable transfer and management of data in a cloud storage environment.

CDMI addresses the lack of standardization in three key areas related to cloud storage:1. Client controlled client-to-cloud data transfer

2. Client controlled cloud data management

3. Client controlled cloud-to-cloud data transfer

Currently there are no de jure standards in this area.– Amazon S3 is a de facto standard

29

Page 30: Cloud Computing Means Efficient IT | GSF 2012 | Session 3-4

CDMI Overview

CMDI Can be implemented side-by-side with existing, proprietary interfaces by:Public Cloud Providers, Storage Equipment Vendors, or Enterprises themselves
