A. The Kit

The Clothesource Sourcing Kit is designed to

- Help buyers, especially in the EU and US, answer today’s two crucial questions “Am I buying

clothes in this category from the best available country?” and “What other countries should I

be buying this category of clothes from?”

- Help vendors understand where the competition for sales to EU and US in their categories is

coming from

- Help buyers and sellers alike understand apparel supplying countries’ strengths and

weaknesses

- Help industry observers – consultants, national export promotion agencies, trade

associations, academics, students and policy creators - to

The Clothesource Souring Kit provides the essential information about apparel manufacturing

capabilities around the world in the 35 major apparel categories and in over 100 countries.

For each of over 100 supplying countries, the Kit shows apparel manufacturing strengths, and

price competitiveness in each of 35 major product categories and seven apparel business

groups from 2004 to the first half of 2008. It also shows raw material production and

processing capacity, and summarises the import duty and quota restrictions the US and EU

impose on each country, as well as indicating precisely where more detailed information can

be got on each of the different complex duty arrangements separately offered . The Kit

provides macroeconomic information on income and inflation and a summary of the logistic

and ethical implications of work in the country

The kit reviews each of these countries individually

The columns (left hand axis) show each country’s share of all exports to JUSEU: the line (right hand

axis) shows average price for the category concerned to the US and EU (in US $). This chart shows

the cheapest suppliers: it might not show those with the largest share. In the example shown, the

market leader (China) does not appear because it is relatively expensive

We then show the fastest growing suppliers from 2004 to 2008, with their price change

The Thai baht was worth 12% more against the US dollar at year end, leading most of the country’s exporting industries to predict a rapid loss of

competitiveness while a growing number of apparel companies reported difficulties in recruiting. In spite of this sales have held up remarkably

well. Knitwear and intimate apparel/swimwear sales to the US have grown in 2006, as have sales to Japan. Only European customers seem to

have drifted away.
