Last Summer we had one worship service, and we re- ceived a lot of positive feedback from the congregation. At the June meeting of Session, we discussed the possibility of permanently switching to one worship service. We ultimately decided to refer this question to the Renewal Committee. Based upon an overwhelming preference heard in the congre- gational surveys, the Renewal Committee recommended to Session that we make the change to one service of Worship. One service of worship will unite our two worshipping communities into one, and this will strengthen our church. Last Summer we found that a larger attendance in the Sanc- tuary brought more energy and joy into the experience of wor- ship. This is not only a benefit to the worshiping community, it also makes a significant difference to visitors. A full sanctuary will unquestionably make a better impression. Combining our worship services will help us grow. There are two decisions that need to be made – the time for worship to begin each Sunday and the day when we will switch to one service. Our Worship Committee has been assigned the task of evaluating the pros and cons of various alternatives. Worship will then submit a report and recom- mendation to Session, and Session will ultimately decide. If you would like to share your thoughts on these questions, please contact one of the members of the Worship Commit- tee. Below you will find a list of the Worship Committee mem- bers. The members of Session are listed on an insert included in this newsletter. Session firmly believes that transitioning to one ser- vice of worship will be in the best interest for our church and church’s future. Soup FestSoup FestSoup FestSoup Fest Soup Fest will be held on Febru-ary 15 at 5:30 p.m. in the Fel-lowship Hall. This annual crowd-pleaser is a friendly competition featuring a variety of soups from the many talented cooks in our congregation. Prizes will be awarded for the best soups in the following four categories: Best of the Bird (chicken), Soup on the Hoof (beef), Garden Variety (vegetable), and Wild Card (anything goes). With all of the entries in each of the categories, you're bound to either find an old stand-by or maybe even discover a new favorite or two. The winning recipes will also be pub-lished in a future newsletter and stored in the church's ar-chives. Please bring your soup entry in an appropriate con-tainer. There will be tables reserved for each category and attendants at those tables will provide the entries with index cards to label each one.

This is a fun-filled evening of food and fellowship. Make ready your favorite recipes and we'll see you at Soup Fest on February 15. Desserts will be provided. Please let the church office know by Monday, February 13, if you are coming and whether or not you will be bringing soup for the competition. If you have questions, please contact Becca Wright.

January 2017 The Family Promise ministry touched many lives in 2016 – both the homeless families participating in the program and the volunteers who served them. Thanks to our faithful Church members who took time out of their hectic schedules to stay with the families or prepare meals: Alan, Barbara L., Barbara and Larry, Beth, Bob, Carolyn, David C., David G., Debbie, Debra and Will, Diana, Dorothy, Emily, Gail, Gary, Jane, Jenny, Jim, Karen and Don, Kim, Linda and Pete, Mari-an and Bill, Marsha and John, Mary Beth, Peggy, Ridley, Ross, Sharon, Steve, Sue, Sylvia, Teresa, Tom, and Troy. Special thanks to our faithful schedulers, Florence and Robin, and to our breakfast and staples organizer, Laura. All prayers are also much appreciated. Without these dedicated volun-teers, First Presbyterian’s participation in this ministry would not be possible. If you would like to be a part of our effort to minister to homeless families in 2017, please contact Liz or Gray Stothart (246-1661 or [email protected]). In December, we hosted two mothers and their small children. Unfortunately, one mother and her six-year-old daughter had to spend a night away from our Church in a motel when the child became very ill. The other family was comprised of a mother and two children, a boy and a girl, both under two years. In addition to our regular volunteers, we are looking for one or two people to take home and launder the sheets and towels used by the families after they spend the week in our building. No need to hurry; you would just need to have them ready before the next host week, six months later. We have had as few as two people in the program and the maximum number is fourteen. Please talk to Liz or Gray if you would be willing to serve in this capacity. In 2017, we will be hosting families during these weeks: March 5-12 at St. Dominic Catholic Church June 11-18 at First Presbyterian Church September 3-10 at St. Dominic Catholic Church December 17-24 at First Presbyterian Church

Volunteer of the Month We would like to thank Emily Gaude for her beautiful and inspired work on the big bulletin board across from the Sanc-tuary during Advent and now for the winter season. She has wonderful, creative ideas for future bulletin boards as well. Emily is one of our newer members and has already found ways to “be the hands of Christ” at First Presbyterian Church. She helps the office staff by stuffing the worship bulletins on Fridays, and she has a glorious soprano voice and blesses us Sunday mornings during Worship as a part of our Chancel Choir. Thank you, Emily!

Let’s Build a HouseLet’s Build a HouseLet’s Build a HouseLet’s Build a House The Habitat for Humanity Faith Build project was approved by the Session. Habitat volunteers will be needed on Monday April 10, Tuesday April 11, Friday May 12, and Saturday May 13. We will be working with nine other churches to build the house for the Madine Skaggs Family. Peter Borg will be the project coordinator for Habitat. Gary and Catherine Tucker will be our on site coordinators. We will have sign up sheets in the foyer each Sunday or you can get in touch with me: 737-3328 or [email protected]. Each week will focus on one of the state-ments such as “I am the bread of life” or “I am the light of the world”. A pastor or member from the committee will write a devotion and prayer. The weekly devotion will also include a Bible reading, suggestions for daily prayer, service oriented activities, and individual activities to help live into the theme of the week. We are planning to have copies available for pick up at church as well as a downloadable copy on our website. Be on the lookout for more information soon.
