Lizards smell with their tongues, which are forked like a snake’s. They have tiny ear openings, and their hearing is average to poor. Flying lizards have been seen gliding distances of 196 feet (60 m) between trees without losing significant altitude. Baby lizards hatch fully formed and are self reli- ant, requiring no help from the mother to survive. The horned lizard is cov- ered in spines and is some- times called a horned toad or horny toad. The Gila monster grows up to 22 inches (56 cm) long.
