1: Introduction

1.0 Introduction

This document provides guidelines on how drives with Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1, and Windows 10 can be cloned using Logicube disk drive duplicators. The following products are covered in this article:

• SuperSonix®-NG

• ZClone™ Xi

• ZClone™

• SuperSonix®

• OmniSAS™

• OmniClone™ 2Xi, 5Xi, 10Xi

• Echo Plus™

1.1 Partitioning Schemes

There are two common partitioning schemes currently being used for Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1, and Windows 10; MBR and GPT.

MBR (Master Boot Record) – The older and currently more common partitioning scheme.

GPT (GUID Partition Table) – A newer (and at this time less common) partitioning scheme.

1.2 Cloning to Smaller Capacity Drives

Target drives must be at least the same capacity or larger than the Master drive. Specifically, each Target drive must have the same number of sectors (or Logical Block Addresses/LBAs) or a larger number of sectors or LBAs than the Master.

If the Master drive is larger in capacity than any Target drive, it is still possible to clone the drive, but there are some adjustments that will need to be made to the Master drive. The following applies to any Operating System:

• The partitions on the Master drive need to be adjusted to be less than the capacity/size of the smallest Target drive.

• The partitions on the Master drive need to be adjusted so that the free/unallocated space is at the end of the drive.




It is highly recommended to make a backup copy of the Master drive by performing a Mirror copy of the drive to make sure there is an exact duplicate backup of the Master drive before changing partition sizes.

Logicube cannot provide support on how to re-size or shrink partitions, however, there are several articles and software/utilities/tools available on how to re-size or shrink partitions.

Once the partitions have been adjusted to properly fit the Target drive, it can be cloned using any of the cloning methods. Depending on the Operating System and Logicube device used, there may be limitations to cloning the drive. See Section 1.4 for limitations based on the Logicube Device model being used.

1.3 Cloning Methods

Different cloning methods are available on each of the Logicube products listed at the beginning of this document.

1.3.1 Mirror Copy Method

All of the Logicube products listed above have the Mirror Copy method and will support the cloning of any Operating System including Windows 7, 8/8.1, and 10 using this method. Mirror Copy method performs a bit-for-bit copy of the Master drive, producing an exact duplicate of that drive. Please refer to the respective User’s Manual of your Logicube device for complete instructions on how to use this cloning method.

1.3.2 Clever Copy Method

Clever Copy may work with the MBR partitioning scheme. Using Clever Copy, the GPT partitioning scheme is only supported with the SuperSonix-NG, ZClone Xi, and ZClone. Clever Copy copies only the sectors with data from the Master drive.

1.3.3 Selective Partitions Method

Selective Partition Copy method is available only on the following products:

• OmniClone Xi (an additional software option)

• SuperSonix

• OmniSAS

Selective Partition Copy method allows you to specify how each partition is going to be copied. For more information on how Selective Partition method works, please refer to the respective User’s Manual of your Logicube device for complete instructions on how to use this cloning mode.




1.4 Cloning Method Limitations

Depending on the Operating System and Logicube device, there are limitations when using certain cloning methods.

1.4.1 Clever Copy Method Limitations

Clever Copy method copies only data sectors and fills the rest of the drives with zeroes (blank space) and depending on the Logicube device, will expand the partition to fill the rest of the drive or the user can choose the expansion percentage. For more information on how Clever Copy method works, please refer to the respective User’s Manual of your Logicube device for complete instructions on how to use this cloning mode. Due to Operating System, OEM, and/or software specifications and limitations, here are the limitations when using Clever Copy Mode for each device:

1.4.1.1 SuperSonix-NG

• All System Restore, Recovery, and OEM partitions should not be expanded.

• The Target drives must be the same size or larger (specifically, they must have at least the same number of available sectors or Logical Block Addresses) than the Master drive.

• Windows 10 was released after the last ZClone software was released and is not officially supported when using Clever Copy.

1.4.1.4 SuperSonix

• The Master drive must use the MBR partitioning scheme.

• The Master drive must contain no more than 3 partitions.

• The Operating System partition must be the last partition on the drive.

• The Target drives must be the same size (specifically, they must have the same number of available sectors or Logical Block Addresses) as the Master drive.

• Windows 10 was released after the last SuperSonix software was released and although not officially supported, may work when using Clever Copy.

1.4.1.5 OmniClone 2Xi/5Xi/10Xi




• The Target drives must be the same size (specifically, they must have the same number of available sectors or Logical Block Addresses) as the Master drive.

• Windows 10 was released after the last OmniClone Xi software was released and although not officially supported, may work when using Clever Copy.

1.4.1.6 OmniSAS

• Windows 7, 8/8.1, or 10 is not supported with Clever Copy. Use Mirror copy method.

1.4.1.7 Echo Plus

• Windows 7, 8/8.1, or 10 is not supported with Clever Copy. Use Mirror copy method.




Due to the various numbers of ways a Windows 7, 8/8.1, or 10 drive can be created, there are times when Clever Copy will not work even if the drives are the same model and the Master drive has 3 or less partitions. In these cases, Selective mode, if available, is recommended, if supported. Mirror mode is always available as a supported way to clone any Operating System.

1.4.2 Selective Partition Method Limitations

Due to Operating System, OEM, and/or software specifications and limitations, here are the limitations when using Clever Copy Mode for each device:

• All System Restore, Recovery, and OEM partitions should set to Mirror and the Operating Partition (last partition on the list) should be set to Clever.

• Windows 10 was released after the last SuperSonix software was released and although not officially supported, may work when using Selective Partition Copy.

1.4.2.2 OmniClone 2Xi/5Xi/10Xi




• All System Restore, Recovery, and OEM partitions should set to Mirror and the Operating Partition (last partition on the list) should be set to Clever.

• Windows 10 was released after the last OmniClone Xi software was released and although not officially supported, may work when using Selective Partition Copy.




1.4.2.3 OmniSAS

• Windows 7, 8/8.1, or 10 is not supported with Selective Partition Copy.

1.4.3 Master Manager

The SuperSonix and OmniClone Xi have a feature called Master Manager. Drives with the Windows 7, 8/8.1, and 10 Operating Systems are not supported with Master Manager.
