By Jeremiah S. Papineau [email protected] MORRISONVILLE — Justin Wise has a talent many adults wish they had. Though only 9 years old, Justin can play the piano unlike most children his age. When his fingers touch the keys, he’s in- stantly able to play a sonata by Beethoven or a canon by Pachelbel, with seemingly no trouble at all. Justin was first introduced to playing pi- ano more than five years ago, when his mother, Lisa Wise, sat down with him to dabble on a simple keyboard. “I noticed when he would hit a wrong note, he would know right away,” said Lisa. “I knew that was a good sign because a lot of adults don’t even know when they hit a wrong note.” It wasn’t until he was 6 years old that Justin began to seriously pursue playing pi- ano. Through his uncle, Lisa’s brother, Justin was connected with a piano teacher and began taking lessons. The lessons are weekly today, with Justin practicing six days a week in addition to his lessons, for approximately 30-40 minutes a day, he said. REXFORD — Five-year-old Hannah Sames is battlinga rare, debilitating neurolog-ical disorder, but she isn’talone in her struggle.

The people of the NorthCountry and several areasacross the state have been byher side since she was diag-nosed with giant axonal neu-ropathy in 2007. Hannah, thedaughter of North Countrynatives Matt and Lori Sames, remains positive through itall, said her father, despitethe challenges GAN placeson her mobility.

“Overall, she’s doing pret-ty well,” said Sames. “We’venoticed a little slip in her bal-ance, which is consistentwith the disease.”

However, Hannah playedtee ball for the first time lastspring, he said, giving hermuch enjoyment and time tohave fun like an average kid.

“She loved it,” Same said.“She fell down a bit but shepicked herself up, dustedherself off and wanted tokeep going. She’s just anamazing little kid.”

The Sames family hasn’tsat idly by while Hannah suf-fers. Last year, Hannah’sHope Fund, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, was es-tablished with the mission offinding treatment and a curefor GAN.

Though finding a cure fortheir daughter ’s condition istheir first priority, saidSames, Hannah’s family

wants to do whatever theycan to help anyone withGAN.

“Our little organization isthe only one in the world forthis disease,” said Sames.“And, it’s not just about onechild; it’s about every kid inthe world who has this dis-ease.”

Money raised for Han-nah’s Hope Fund has alreadybegun to provide researchfunding to institutions in-cluding Stanford University, the University of North Car-olina at Chapel Hill and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospitalin New York City. Thefundraisers held in the Rex-ford-Albany area and here inthe North Country are criti-cal in continuing research, said Sames.

To that end, the Sames

family will host its secondannual Hannah’s Hope FundBenefit Dinner this Sunday,July 19, at the Rainbow Wed-ding and Banquet Hall in Al-tona. Though last year ’s ben-

efit dinner had an over-whelming turnout, Samessaid he and his family will bethankful for whatever re-sponse this year ’s dinnergets, given the troubled stateof the economy.

“The fundraising environ-ment is much tougher than itwas,” said Sames. “We’ll begrateful for anything peoplecan do. We’ll do the best wecan do.”

The roast beef dinner willbe held from 11:30 a.m. to 2p.m., with adults charged$20 each and children ages 6-12 charged $10. Childrenages 5 and younger will beadmitted free.

The event will include alive auction by Gary Phinneyand entertainment providedby G & B Special Effects.

How do you make sure your loved one gets the mostout of their rehabilitation? According to ChristianAndaya, RPT, from Today’s Caregiver, the key is

to get involved in the process. Research your senior ’s condition and educate yourself, so

you can ask questions. Learn about their insurance cover-age, and find out what is covered and what isn’t. Find outwhat the “length of stay” will be. Attend patient conferenceswith the health-care staff. If there isn’t a conference, sched-ule one. The purpose of the conference is to learn about yoursenior ’s overall condition- medical, physical, emotional, and psychological- and to clarify the goals and expectationsof the patient, family, and rehabilitation team.

When therapy has begun, frequently discuss the progressyour loved one is making with the entire rehabilitation team.Ask permission to read their medical charts. Ask about any-thing you don’t understand. Attend as many therapy ses-sions as you can- if possible, attend every activity. Talk aboutthe routine, and learn about any exercises that you can helpyour loved one with outside of therapy. Encourage your sen-ior to go to therapy. Rehabilitation is never easy and gettingtheir full cooperation can make all of the difference betweensuccess and failure. At the same time, remember that theyhave the right to complain, or to refuse to participate. When

the discharge planningprocess begins, get involvedin that as well. Ask aboutwhat equipment will beneeded, and find out whatinsurance will cover. Checkthe classifieds section ofnewspapers for used equip-ment, such as walkers, canes, and wheelchairs. Many ofthem sell for a fraction of thenew price. Talk to the reha-bilitation staff about usedequipment as well- they mayhave some additional sug-gestions.

Flash drives are indispensable for data backup andtransport. Is there another storage technology morewidely available, cheaper or easier to use? Perhaps

not, but another medium gaining ground is a useful alter-native available over any Internet connection, completelyfree in some cases and as easy to use as surfing the Web. Themedium is sometimes called “cloud” storage and here’s howit works.

The term “cloud” is just a reference to the Internet. Any-thing traveling across or contained somewhere within theInternet is considered to be in the cloud. Cloud storage sim-ply means a user has access to hard drive space typicallyheld on a file server hosted on the Internet by an organiza-tion.

One such organization is Microsoft who offers a servicecalled Skydrive. Part of the Windows Live service, Skydriveoffers an amazing 25GB of storage completely free. Usersmay create folders and upload files to them with options tokeep the folders completely private, share the files with oth-er select people or make the folder completely public whichmeans anyone in the world can view the info.

A user already having a Windows Live account needsnothing more to get started. New users can sign up for a Liveaccount and then get started. Either way, visit

skydrive.live.com on theWeb and log in or create anew account. Once the ac-count is set up users maystart creating folders and up-loading files. A bar graphgives a visual representationof how much space is beingused and how much is stillavailable.

One advantage of cloudstorage as opposed to a flashdrive is there’s nothing toplug in, unplug or lose. Adisadvantage is data is un-available if the network isdown — and anything hosted in this manner is never com-pletely private.

The major project for this year’s building maintenance isreplacing the roofs of the two town buildings at Pick-etts Corners Park — Dr. Lee’s office and the nearby

buildings and grounds garage. We’ve also worked on the basketball court in Standish and

added a children’s swing to that playground. Last winter, snowand ice fell off the courthouse roof and did some minor damageto the fuel tank and continually caused problems; so we movedthe tank out of harm’s way before the snow flies again, which, the way this summer is going, may come before the 15th of Red-ford this year.

The federally-mandated upgrade to the pool has been com-pleted. The broken pump and bad pipe at the Standish WaterDistrict have been replaced. The old pump will be rebuilt to actas the stand-by for the next emergency.

The farmers market has started up at the pavilion behind townhall again this summer. On Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.,several vendors sell their local produce. If you haven’t visitedin the past, consider this year the time to start.

On display in town hall are19 works of art created bySaranac High School students. This summer’s exhibition isthe eighth show since the Com-munity Art Connection pro-gram started in 2006 and fea-tures digital photography, stipple renderings, chalkdrawings, and other media.

July 25th will see the fif-teenth annual Saranac Flatwa-ter Challenge start at the boat launch behind the pool. The com-petition will feature one-, five-, nine-, and 15-mile courses. Thatsame day the New Land Trust on the Plumadore Road is havinga blueberry festival. “Summer” continues.

Joe Gerardi is the supervisor of the town of Saranac. His column ap-pears regularly in the Clinton County Free Trader Today.

Summer upkeep, happenings

Notes from the Hollow

By Joe Gerardi

I’ve got a secret. If you were to walk through my kitchen, nothing would seem out of the ordinary. My refrigeratoris well stocked with food, as are my kitchen cabinets. It

looks very much like I’d imagine your own kitchen looks. But take a look at my basement pantry, and prepare for a

shock. The room looks like a small-scale supermarket. Stockedshelves line the walls. More than 30 boxes of brand-name cere-al will greet you, along with 20 bottles of apple juice. Towers ofpaper towels and toilet paper rolls reach toward the ceiling. There are so many packages of baby diapers in here that, stacked, they’d completely conceal the pantry door. And the shelf ofhousehold cleaners – everything from furniture polish and dish-washer detergent to glass cleaner and carpet sprays – will leaveyou wondering why my house isn’t spotless. (Hey, I do havethree kids who make it their daily mission to undermine myhousecleaning efforts!)

People’s reactions to my pantry never cease to amuse me.They ask, “Are you worried about a food shortage?” “Who willeat all of this?” “Did you buy all of this at one time?”

But once I explain stockpiling most people begin to get it.Wouldn’t you buy a lot of cereal if it were only 6 cents a box?How many bottles of apple juice would you buy at 25 cents abottle? Both of these products have a long shelf life. And my fam-ily of five goes through a lot of cereal and juice, among manyother things.

Stockpiling and couponing go hand-in-hand. When youstockpile groceries, you buy as many units as you can afford tobuy, using as many of the coupons that you have collected forthe items involved. As consumers, we’re just not conditioned tobuy large quantities of the same item. And yet, it makes good fi-nancial sense to do so.

Grocery stores price all items on a revolving cycle. Everything

in the store reaches its lowestprice point just once in a three-month period. A Super-Couponer waits until the priceof a certain item is at its lowestpoint, then buys enough to lasthis or her household for thenext three months. The Super-Couponer saves money com-pared to the shopper who buysonly enough of a sale item toget through one week, then returns later to buy more of the sameitem when it is not on sale.

Twenty bottles of apple juice may seem like a lot to buy at onetime, and it is. But at a quarter a bottle, those 20 bottles cost mejust $5. The juice’s regular price? $2.89. So, for less than the costof two regular-priced bottles, I bought 20.

If I bought what I thought our family would drink in a weekduring the apple juice sale, I’d leave the store with just three bot-tles. Once those bottles were gone, I’d be back at the store pay-ing $2.89 apiece for the next three. Instead, I stockpile. The quan-tity I bought will last our family about seven weeks, and we’vesaved a lot of money, too.

Stockpiling is a simple concept. Once you start, you’ll won-der why you didn’t shop this way before. Of course, you mayalso wonder where all your pantry space went. Next week I’llshare some of my stockpiling tips with you.

The Red Cross is not a gov-ernment agency, we rely onprivate donations of time, talent, money and blood todo our work.

We rely on the generosityand willingness of peopleand businesses to help others

in need. We are proud of the fact that 91 centsof every dollar the Red Cross spends goes tohumanitarian services and programs.

What exactly does Red Cross do?

Nonwind backing up wind Can wind energy ever possibly displace

any coal/nuclear steam energy? Since windvaries, non-wind’s “spinning reserve” mustalways stand by for instant rescue.

Doesn’t it?Wind does vary; do turbines’ outputs?

Against that, megawatt-sized turbines eachhave onboardwind speed anddirection detec-tors informingresident comput-ers. They controlmotors that con-stantly adjust/re-adjust bladepitch, spillingfaster windsmore; slower less, letting the GE 1.5MW machine con-tribute 100 per-cent rated output or none! Also, developerssite wind farms for maximum wind reliabil-ity.

“... Wind speeds don't suddenly dropfrom strong to calm, .... (“Wind, Windpow-er, and Open Space”; Charles Komanoff;Orion Magazine; Sept.-Oct 2006).”.

We’re told steam power ’s variation be-yond operational range, occurs slowly. Can’t steam actually stop/restart quicklythough? Suppose engineers designed a ma-chine that couldn't quickly stop for emer-gencies. Imagine how frequent the injuriousaccidents, electrocutions, boiler explosions, nuclear meltdowns, and how high the re-sulting insurance! Who’d buy it? Realityprovides throttles that block steam until re-

opened, and emergency pressure-reliefvalves. Similarly, wind’s quickly shut downby simultaneously rotating all individualblades to lose all power. Both have poweroutput switches. They’re very well matched.Plenty of warning time exists.

The electric grid’s input has always var-ied. Whatever their power source, all gener-ators must stop for maintenance. Usually

scheduled, fail-ure’s sometimesunexpected.Throughout thegrid’s lifetime, ofover a century, steam and otherpower sourceshave always runintermittently, without shuttingcustomers down.

Wind fits that.Typically, withmore deployed,

more wind backs up other wind. It nowpowers 10 percent of Britain, with eddyingoften letting another wind harvester takeover from one lacking power. A greater pro-portion of local wind’s backup comes underGermany’s 13 percent; still more from Den-mark’s 25 percent. Wind powers 1-3 percentof America; much of our backup energy’swind-powered too.

Whenever wind’s running, equivalentsteam sources favor wind’s free “fuel” bycutting back or shutting down. Wind’s alsopart of “spinning reserve.”No type of gen-erator provides constant power.

PLATTSBURGH — In 1991, aprogram pairing anglers andchildren with disabilities wasborn. And, after nearly 20 years,CAST for Kids docked on LakeChamplain.

The CAST for Kids Founda-tion, or “Catch a Special Thrill,”was founded by Jim Owens, whoexplained the program has nowbeen to 30 countries and 60events across the country.

“At the time we started it, Ihappened to be the state BassFederation president and I waslooking for something to do withyouth,” explained Owens, who isalso the executive director of theprogram.

Owens contacted The Bureauof Reclamation, which managesand protects the water in 17states in the west, who was look-ing to “develop partnerships ontheir bodies of water.”

“I said, ‘You know, I want to dothis for disabled kids, becausethey’re the ones that need themost help in getting out on thewater and fishing,’” Owens re-

called. “That’s where it started,and 19 years later we’re still do-ing it.”

However, when CAST for Kidscame to Plattsburgh July 11, theyhad a partnership to make theday even more memorable forthe kids involved.

The Wal-mart FLW FishingTournament was happening onLake Champlain, which made fora perfect match to benefit chil-dren with disabilities in the area.

“The CAST for Kids contactedthe FLW about possibly joiningthe two events together at one oftheir stops,” explained KristyKennedy, group marketing spe-cialist for the Plattsburgh-NorthCountry Chamber of Commerce.“FLW had actually suggestedwhy don’t they try Lake Cham-plain in the Plattsburgh area.”

Kennedy explained CAST forKids contacted her, asking if itwas something the chamberwould be interested in hosting,to which she replied, “Let’s gofor it.”

At 7:30 a.m., childrenswarmed to the Plattsburgh BoatBasin on Dock Street to go out ona boat with a FLW professional

angler and learn the tricks of thetrade.

Kennedy estimated nearly 40children came out for the event, which also so help from volun-teers of the local Kiwanis Club.In the end, the children left withsmiles on their faces.

“Most of them caught goodsize fish,” she said. “I don’t thinkthere was actually a kid who did-n’t catch a fish.”

“FLW is just fabulous,” saidOwens. “They’re really a family-oriented group. I’ve workedwith a lot of different organiza-tions and agencies all over theUnited States and some you cantell they’re doing it becausesomebody said they have to.FLW does it because they reallybelieve in it.”

For the future of CAST forKids, Owens said they alreadyplan on returning to Plattsburgh.

“We will be back,” emphasizedOwens. “I’ve already talked tosome of the local people, andeven if FLW isn’t here, the localbass club has said that they’lltake it on, that they feel that thisis such a special event, they wantto keep it going.”

PLATTSBURGH — The state’seconomy is down, but not necessar-ily out, according to State Comp-troller Thomas P. DiNapoli.

The state comptroller gave anoverview of New York’s economicsituation during an economicroundtable discussion hosted by thePlattsburgh-North Country Cham-ber of Commerce July 11.

During his discussion, DiNapolidescribed the state’s fiscal year —which began April 1 — as both a“time of great challenge” and “cri-sis.” First-quarter revenues for themonths of April and May weredown 40 percent compared to lastyear, which he contributed to thenational recession, loss of revenueon Wall Street and the state’s grow-ing unemployment situation.

Though there has been “a signifi-cant drop-off in revenue coming tothe state,” said DiNapoli, New Yorkis “getting through the early part ofthe fiscal year because spending isalso down.”

“We’re still off from the financial

plan, but it reinforces what we’vesaid from the beginning that it is ab-solutely crucial that we carefullymonitor revenue and spending anddo the best we can to manage spend-ing more effectively, especially inview of the continued revenue de-cline,” said the state comptroller.

Though not yet finalized, a pre-liminary look at figures for themonth of June — which DiNapolisaid will be more indicative of whatlies ahead for the fiscal year — showanother down month for revenue.

“It’s certainly not going to behigher; it’s not going to be a reverseof a trend of the first two months,”admitted DiNapoli. “The questionis going to be how much of a declinein terms of being off the financialplan it will be.”

“We’re going to be in a tough sit-uation from a revenue perspective,”he added.

The state’s annual budget hasn’thelped matters either, according toDiNapoli, who said the budget wasbased on “the hopeful notion theeconomy is going to recover morequickly than most of the expertsseem to be predicting.”

That, paired with a large percent-age of this year ’s anticipated rev-enue being banked on federal stim-ulus funding, concerns the statecomptroller.

“We’ve got about $11 billion ofthe state budget based on revenuesthat are either nonrecurring or tem-porary in nature,” said DiNapoli.“That’s problematic; that’s an issueand a concern.”

Though the nation finds itself inthe middle of an economic crisis, Di-Napoli said it’s also an opportunityfor state leaders to think differentlyand be more frugal in governmentspending.

“I think that would’ve made a lit-tle more sense than taking the tem-porary benefit of the federal stimu-lus money on those tax increasesand basically deferring to the futuresome of those tough choices onspending that we still need tomake,” said DiNapoli. “Thosechoices aren’t going to go away. They’ve just been delayed to anoth-er time.”

Focusing on the North Country, the state comptroller reported ap-proximately half of the more than

5,000 jobs gained in the region be-tween 2003 and 2008, were lost inthe first five months of 2009. In ad-dition, the North Country’s unem-ployment rate during those fivemonths averaged 10.2 percent — thehighest of any region in the state.

Despite the bad news, there is stillhope with the continued expansionof existing businesses and creationof new businesses in the area, saidDiNapoli. The recent opening ofNovaBus in the town of Plattsburgh

and the potential for LaurentianAerospace Corp. to bring an esti-mated 200-300 jobs to the NorthCountry are both positive signs, hesaid.

“The long and short of it is you’vegot many great things that havebeen going on for a long period oftime, but you’re facing some of thechallenges we’re all facing in NewYork,” said DiNapoli. “We need tonot lose sight of progress we’vemade in recent years.”

through the new state pro-gram, those services will bemade available to those old-er than age 65.

That’s a big win for seniorcitizens who have suffered aparalyzing stroke or whosuffer from dementia, saidMaggy.

“In the past, services en-abling seniors to continueliving in their homes werelimited. Before, if someonehad a stroke at the age of 66,we couldn’t help them,”said Maggy. “Now, with thisnew program, we can assistthem to get what they needto live at home.”

Kevin Defayette, regionaldirector for Residential Re-sources, said it’s exciting toprovide supports for peoplewho choose to live in theirhome as an alternative to re-siding in a skilled nursingfacility.

“We work closely with awide variety of organiza-tions in order to secure serv-ices that meet the specificand unique needs of each in-dividual,” Defayette ex-plained. “We, along with,

the SUNY Traumatic BrainInjury Program, NorthCountry Home Health Care,North Country Center forIndependence and CatholicCharities are the first to pio-neer supports of this natureto individuals in our com-munity.”

Those applying for servic-es must be eligible for Med-icaid, said Maggy, thoughResidential Resources isable to help with informa-tion about that as well.

“The paperwork here atour office will tell them ex-actly what they need to do,”she said.

“I think people don’tknow these services are outthere,” said Maggy. “And,it’s important to get theword out.”

SeniorsFrom page 1Twenty-four become United States citizens

By Jeremiah S. [email protected]

PLATTSBURGH — Twen-ty-four individuals fromcountries spanning theglobe are now among thenewest United States citi-zens.

Clinton Community Col-lege hosted the ClintonCounty Supreme Court’sannual Naturalization Cere-mony July 10, with friendsand family of those takingthe Oath of Naturalizationwith them in attendance.

The Hon. Kevin K. Ryancongratulated the two dozenmen and women for theirpursuit of citizenship. Thetiming of this year ’s cere-mony, Ryan noted, coincideswith the celebration of theHudson-Fulton-ChamplainQuadricentennial, whichhonors, in part, the life ofFrench explorer Samuel deChamplain.

“[Champlain] showed atremendous amount ofcourage to cross a vast anddangerous ocean, to seewhat this New World of-

fered,” said Ryan, addingthe explorer faced much ad-versity and many challengesin his voyage. “And, I’msure that if we heard fromour new fellow citizensabout their lives, we wouldadmire the courage it tookthem to leave their friends, their families and their cul-tures and, like Champlain, travel into the unknown.”

“Whatever your dreamsare, I hope they are real-ized,” Ryan told the new cit-izens. “In your quest foryour dreams, you, I am sure, will leave a positive mark onyour new country.”

Francine Carole Fitzger-ald, Rouses Point, wasamong those to receive citi-zenship and, for her, it wassomething she felt was longoverdue.

“I’ve been waiting for along time. I’ve lived here inthe States for 43 years,” saidFitzgerald, who was former-ly a Canadian citizen fromQuebec. “It was just time todo it.”

The evolution of the U.S.government in recent years

prompted Fitzgerald to gether citizenship, she said, with tighter restrictions forcrossing the U.S.-Canadaborder being among thechanges she’s seen.

“I still have relatives [inCanada], so this will just beeasier for me to cross backand forth as a U.S. citizen,”she said.

Other than that and theability to vote and performjury duty when called upon,Fitzgerald said she doesn’tthink much else will change.

Though she’s now anAmerican citizen, there’sstill some Canadian left inher, she said.

“I still have my accent,”Fitzgerald said with a laugh.

Francine Carole Fitzgerald, right, shakes the hand of state Assem-blywoman Janet L. Duprey, R-Peru, during the Clinton CountySupreme Court Naturalization Ceremony July 10.

We’re building great markets for Northeast family dairy farms! gri-Mark is owned and controlled by dairy farm

families from New England and New York. Our farmers work together in the marketplace so they can receive the highest possible price for all of the milk their farm produces and the best legislative representation possible on dairy issues.

At Agri-Mark, we have two great brands that create great local markets and generate income for our farmers. Our award-winning Cabot brand of Vermont cheddar cheese, butter, and other dairy products continues to grow each year, adding to our farmers’ milk checks. Our Cabot cheese again won the title of “World’s Best Cheddar” in 2006.

Agri-Mark farmers also own the McCadam brand of New York dairy products, and that investment is generating income

for them as well. In 2007, McCadam won first place at the U.S. Cheese Championships in Wisconsin and the title

“America’s Best Cheese!” Agri- mark had a record year of profits in 2007 and the future looks bright!

COUNTRY CORNER DINER

With theheart ofthe

summer seasonlooming in theweeks ahead, tem-peratures are certainto increase. This ex-pected increase inair temperaturesand a correspondingrise in water temper-atures will pushtrout down to thedepths is search ofcooler, more oxy-genated waters. Optimum watertemperatures for most trout speciesranges in the mid 50’s.

Although the season’s incessantrains have kept water and oxygenlevels higher than normal; anglersworking the local ponds and lakeshave already resorted to using leadcore line or sinking flyline in an ef-fort to present their lures or flies toreceptive fish.

On the ponds last weekend, Ifound fish were most active in thedepths of 18 to 24 feet. This range iswell below the level that most an-glers can achieve when trolling withmonofiliment line.

In such conditions, many anglersdecide to target other species such asbass or pike. Trout diehards alsohave the option of chasing rain-bows, a species that is more tolerantof warmer waters and brighter, sun-ny conditions.

Rainbows usually respond well toflies, lures or spoons presented inthe upper levels of the water col-umn. These fish seem to be particu-larly fond of flashy ‘Christmas trees’or ‘Cowbells’ tipped with a worm ora fly. However, for brook trout en-thusiasts, the arrival of midsummertemperatures shouldn’t signal theend of the season. It simply requiresa change of venue.

Rather than dredging the depthsof their usual spring and fall trout

ponds, anglersshould consider theopportunities avail-able on the park’snumerous, upperelevation ponds.

Brook trout en-thusiasts have longrecognized thatthese high eleva-tion ponds oftenmaintain ideal wa-ter temperatureswell into the heat ofthe summer. Yet,these waters are

still visited primarily by hikers whoare just passing through.

The cooler waters of these pondsare the result of a number of factors. In the upper elevations, eveningtemperatures regularly drop intothe 40’s and many mountain ponds, located on the shoulders of the highpeaks, are shaded for a good portionof the day. Additionally, most ofthese ponds are spring fed or filledby cold, well oxygenated, mountainstreams.

I have discovered that, in general, the higher the elevation of the pond, the colder the water temperatures.I’ve also found that elevation is animportant factor in determining an-gling pressure. The more difficultthe access usually results in the few-er angler visits.

Accessibility is keyOn most remote waters, anglers

casting from shore are at a a distinctdisadvantage. Typically, theseshorelines are littered with withdead and downed trees, which canprevent the landing of a big fish. Itis also difficult to cast far enough toreach deeper waters where largerfish lurk. To avoid such issues, I pre-fer to use a good quality, inflatableraft. Although pack canoes havegreatly diminished in weight overthe years, they can be difficult or im-possible to haul up steep mountain

trails or through thick spruce andheavy blowdown. Rafts can easilybe condensed into a backpack.

Bellyboats are a good compro-mise, but I far prefer a raft whichpermits an angler above water cast-ing platform. Belly boats or floattubes also require the fisherman towear waders. With their legs dan-gling in the water, anglers stir up thewater or get stuck in the muck.

Avoid the cheap, “pool toy” typerafts as they just don’t hold up. I usea raft that’s equipped with severalair chambers and oar locks. I find itto be an ideal vessel for the smaller, more remote and inaccessible wa-ters. Often, for those willing to putin the effort, it’s possible to have apond all to yourself.

Which way to the water? The Adirondack region is graced

with a multitude of high elevationponds. And due to the extensiverestoration efforts implemented bythe NYSDEC, many of these watersretain healthy populations of brooktrout. The more remote waterswhich are stocked annually by heli-copter can be found listed on DEC'sannual stocking reports.

Consider the number of waterbodies included in just a few of thepark’s numerous Wilderness Areas,a partial listing includes thePharaoh Lake Wilderness (39), HighPeaks (112), Dix Mountain (12), Sen-tinel Range (5), Five Ponds (99),Hoffman Notch (8), Blue Ridge (19)and the Siamese Ponds (33).

A sampling of the more remotewaters would include Round Pond,Dix Pond, Puffer Pond, PeakedMountain Pond, Moose Pond, Lath-am Pond, Tom Peck Pond, Cold-

spring Pond, Giant’s WashbowlPond, Bartlett Pond, LivingstonPond, Cooper Kiln Pond, WarrenPond, Owen Pond, Copperas Pond,Winch Pond, Dawson Pond, Bruey-er Pond, Beaver Pond, Little Amper-sand Pond, Nate Pond, Curtis Pond,Dog Pond, Grizzle Ocean, BearPond, Beaver Meadow Pond, Moun-tain Pond and Lost Pond.

These are just a few of the stocked, trout waters, however there aremany more. As beavers continue tobuild dams on backwoods brooks, the number and size of potentialtrout waters continues to increaseevery year.

An indication of this trend is evi-

denced in the most recent Global In-formation Systems survey of theAdirondacks. Surveys have re-vealed that the Adirondack Parkcurrently contains over 11,101 bod-ies of water that measure over oneacre in size.

Although I’ll likely never have theopportunity to hit them all, it will re-main a challenge to fish as many asI can. As the lottery advertisementsproclaim, “Hey, you never know!”

who typically memorizessongs in one to two days, mainly by listening to thenotes.

When asked if he was amusical genius, Justinlaughed and smiled.

“I think I’m becoming,” hesaid.

Justin recently had the op-portunity to play for his firstexclusive audience when he

gave a concert at Meadow-brook Healthcare in Platts-burgh July 13. Playing to anaudience of more than twodozen people, Justin movedseamlessly between classicand more contemporary se-lections except for the occa-sion when he needed to fetcha songbook from his bag orask for assistance from hismother.

“Since it was my first time,I was kind of nervous,” ad-mitted Justin.

“It was kind of difficult forus because we’re not used toit and we had to come upwith a song list,” said Lisa.

“Hopefully, he’ll be able todo this again, and we’ll bebetter organized,” she addedwith a laugh.

Overall, Justin said he en-joyed giving the perform-ance.

“After a couple times, Imight get used to it,” he said.

When Justin isn’t playingpiano, he said he enjoys play-ing outside, riding his bike, and learning more about sci-ence — particularly astrono-my. He said he also enjoysplaying guitar, though don’tlook for him to perform anyguitar solos anytime soon.

“I can tell you right nowI’m better at piano than I amat guitar,” Justin said with asmile.
