Cultivar Choice
Climbing roses vary in plant size. Most traditional climbing roses reach 12 to 15 feet tall, and some grow to 20feet, such as pink-flowered "Cecile Brunner," which is hardy in U.S. Department of Agriculture planthardiness zones 4 through 11. For containers, opt for smaller varieties of climbing roses. "Social Climber"grows to 6 feet tall in USDA zones 6 through 9, with spicy-smelling flowers in summer. The salmon-orange,very fragrant flowers of "Westerland" grace 8-feet-tall canes that are hardy in USDA zones 5 through 9.Climbing miniature roses are suitable for containers, including "Jeanne Lajoie," which grows in USDA zones5 through 8, has pink flowers and grows to about 6 feet tall.
Container Choices
For non-miniature climbing roses, you'll eventually need a big container about the size of a 15-gallon pot or ahalf oak barrel. All containers should have drainage holes in the bottom. Start young climbing roses in 2- to 5-gallon pots, upgrading to larger sizes by a pot size or two larger each year as they grow. Miniature roses needat least a 2-gallon container. Choose nonporous containers such as plastic or glazed pots for lower-maintenance plants. Porous clay or wooden pots loose water from the soil more quickly and need extrawatering, sometimes daily in summer heat.
Growing Mix
All roses, including climbing roses, appreciate a well-draining mix that is high in organic matter. Usingordinary garden soil for container roses may introduce pathogens and usually doesn't provide the properdrainage. Instead, use a quality commercial potting mix containing perlite for good aeration and drainage, ormix together equal parts of a potting mix and perlite. This combination is loose and open, allowing thevigorous roots of climbing roses to easily penetrate and spread through the mix. Use new rather than recycledpotting materials.
Watering Needs
You need to check climbing roses growing in containers frequently for the moisture content of the soil.Because they have a limited volume of soil, they need more frequent watering than roses in the ground. Waterneeds increase when the plant is actively growing and during hot weather. Dig down into the top inch of soilin the pot. If it's dry, water the rose until the water comes through the pot's drainage holes. During winterwhen the plant is dormant, water needs decrease.

Root Pruning
If you have traditional-size climbing roses, which have fibrous roots plus a taproot, try root pruning todevelop healthy root systems in the containers. As you repot your roses every year or two, while the roots areexposed, prune off the ends of the taproots rather than allowing them to bend or curl against the pot bottom.Use pruners cleaned with a cloth soaked in rubbing alcohol before root pruning, to avoid spreading disease.This stimulates branching growth of fibrous roots, which do the work of getting nutrients and water for theroses.
