CONGRATULATIONS

No, not to the Irish Champions or to Three Rock on theirrunning of the Irish Championships at Carlingford, but to the IrishMount Everest expedition and to Dawson Stelfox who represented uson the roof of the world, I'm sure that all us orienteers here at homewould agree that it was a great achievement by the whole expeditionteam. You see, orienteering in Ireland very much grew from mountain-eering, where in other countries it evolved from military exercises orwas an ofshoot of athletics, The links with mountaineering have alwaysbeen quite strong: many an oricntccr, when the maps arc put away or onthe odd free weekend, takes to the bills or the crags for abitof divarsion, and some noted mountaineers aren't averse to funning round with mapand compass from time to time, As was pointed out in a recent TIO,Everest edpedition members f-rank Nugent and Robbie Fenlon are nostrangers to orienteering. while Dawson Stelfox and Dermot Somers arefortunate in being married to orientcers. Indeed, it is largely due tomountaineers such as Sean Rothery, Joss Lynam, Mike Lunt and PaddyO'leary that we started orienteering in the first place.

The days of the generalist arc starling to surface again:orienteering one day, caving, rock climbing, canoeing, hill running.board sailing or cross country racing the next: it may not make forexcellence in anyone field but it's not dull! Are we not lucky to live ina country where there arc so many opportunities for adventure sports onour doorsteps?

Well, OK. I think 3ROC should really becongratulated on thegreat events they ran at Carlingford for the Irisb Championships. I maybe biased but I think it all went off very well and was a fitting highlightof the orienteering year, Running amajor event takes a lot of hard workby a lot of people and running an Irish Championships seventy milesfrom base imposes further problems. As the organising team said manytimes during the long weeks running up to the event "You couldn'rpaypeople 10 do this". The whole sport depends on willing volunteers atevery level, from mapping to planning, laking entries to repairingfences afterwards. To all the unsung heroes who run all our competi-tions, big and small, thank you very much. You give a great deal ofhappiness to very many people.

Finally, thanks to all of you who contributed to this issue,Remember, ifyou are orienteering anywhere interesting this summer,do give us a report on it for no.

ANYONE FOR SHAMROCK?At the time of writing the entries to the ShamrockO-Ringen at the end of June stand at 340 with 200from Ireland and 1'40 from elsewhere, largelyBritain. As 110 has pointed out before, the amountof work going into this event, indeed into any eventof this type, is immense, but the respon se from Irishorienteers has always been very disappointing.Perhaps it's a case of the prophet in his own land. What do the organisers have to do to get you tocome? The choice is yours: get three days greatorienteering in a superb part of the country, runagainst some of the top competitors in your class,or have a really exciting and interesting time athome, sitting in the garden reading the paper -maybe even take the dog for 11 walk!

Entries to the 1993 Shamrock O-Ringen arc stillavailable (justl), Contact Bernard and MargaretCreedon, Mount Prospect, Douglas, Co. Cork(Phone 021-361824, fax 021-361825). QlJOTE OF THE MONTHFrom Bcrtil Norman and Awe Yngstrom's book"Orienteering Technique from Start to Finish"comes the following quotation:

"NEVER RUSH AWAY FROM THE STARTPOINT! The first control is often the key to thewhole course. There is normuch time to gain at thestart point. Sacrifice a few extra seconds instead.Check for yourself - right now - check how long 10seconds really is Just think how much plan-ningyoucou.lddointbatlengthoftimeand, in turn, bow that planning could give youa good safe starton the course. 5-10 extra seconds at the start is nota sacrifice - it is an INVESTMENT! Instead yOll

can save seconds on the things·you repeat MANYTIMES - you only start ONCE!

ODDS 'n' ENDS 'n' ODDS •...The Rohan Rock and Run Mountain Marathon isback in business. This event is to be run in Scotlandon July 17118th, starting only 30 minutes north ofPerth on the A9.

The Rock.and Run has a reputation for seeking outextremes of terrain and weather. In its firstyearintbe Lake District com petitors had to contend witha fierce blizzard and sub-zero temperatures (oneall-woman Elite team reported using lent pegs asmakeshiftice-daggcrs as thcyfollowed steps madepreviously by a party of mountaineers), The fol-lowing year saw competitors cooling off in thelocbs of Galloway in beat-wave conditions wbilein 1990 among the dramatic ridges and peaks of theMamores and Grey Corries the Elite competitorswere required to make ruck-climbing moves ofvery severe standard just to reach the first controlon a giant boulder!

Six courses of varying length are available, not allas· tough as these! For. details and entry formscontact Rohan (Mountain Marathon), 30 Mary-land Road, Tongwell.Milton KeynesMK15 8HN,England.

The Lowe Alpine Comeragh Challenge moun-tain marathon on May 29- 30 was acclaimed a greatsuccess despite tbe awful weather which swelledrivers to uncrossable levels and caused two thirdsof the teams to retire. Cork O's Bernard Creedonand Robert 0'Connor won the veterans' grade andpicked up some Goretex gear for their pains (by allaccounts the teams could bave done with it duringthe coursel) Hopefully a full report in the nextissue.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS UPDATE1: 10,000 has been accepted as the scale for theShort Distance races at the World Championshipsin the USA in October. The reason for the changefrom the I :1.5,000 norm is to give increased legibil-ity. The 10F Council agreed in April that thenormal 24-month notice of any deviation from tbenorm could be waived and that the quality of theevent should take priority over formal require-ments.

Classic race places allocated: The number of placesallocated to Ireland for the Classic (i.e. full dis-tance) race will be 2 men and 2 women. The maxi-mum allowed to any country is 4 in each race.Other countries with 2+2 are Canada, Japan, lithu-ania lind Poland. (In the 1994 World Cup, by theway, each country will be able to enter teams of upto 6 men and 6 women for each event.)

1 hope to have a full preview of the World Cham-pionships with details of the teams in the Septem-ber issue.

IOFNEWSBelorussia has been accepted as a member of theInternational O-Federation, bringing to 42 thenumber of countries affiliated. Victor Drobenkovis the President of the Federation and his address is8/2 Kirov Str., Minsk 220600.

The 1994 Veteran World Cup, as you know, is inScotland. The 1995 event is in Russia, the 1996competition will be in Murcia in Spain with the1997 event in Minnesota, USA. Murcia in SE

8 TIte Irish Orienteer

Spain is one of the strongest orienteering regions inthe country.

As for Junior World Championships, the 1994event will be in Poland, 1995 - Denmark, 1996 -Romania, 1997 - Belgium.

Mountain Dike Orienteering is being examined bythe IOF both toensure that itdoesn't give.rise to en-vironmental or land access problems and to con-sider the possibility that it could be a useful meansof promoting orienteering since mountain biking isa bigb profile activity in some areas. In Spain theyconsider mountain bike-O as the nearest thing toski-orienteering: courses with lots of route-choicebut not too technically demanding.

SWEDES BACK IN ACTIONFollowing their spring training lay-off, the 3000Swedish Elite competitors are back in training andthere will be a full Swedish team at the WorldCbampionships in October. The lay-off was en-forced following the sudden deaths of several oftbe top Swedish orientccrs. Tbe affected runnerscan start training gradually again but should stillpay attention to infections and avoid training whenthey are not well. A small number of them havebeen found to have abnormal changes to the heartmuscle and these will be given individual trainingrecommendations by the doctors responsible.

Swedish team doctor Christel' Johansson, says ..... it is extremely important for an elite orientcernever to train hard when he or she has an ongoinginfection. Thecombination of an established infec-tion and high intensity training can lead to seriousheart damage. The symptoms involved range on ascale from normal 'flu' symptoms to dizziness andfainting when running and it is difficult to give asingle piece of advice. Fyffes 1993 Irish ChampionshipsCarlingford, Co. Louth, 15-16May

John Feehan re{2Qrt.~

All the ingredients were there, astrong organising learn, a major sponsor andthe co-operation of the peopleofCarlingford:the event was an outstanding success. Thehuge input involved resulted in a higher stan-dard of organisation that will prove a bard actto follow for future IOC·s.

The programme promised plenty ofsapping climb on all courses and many anxiousglances were being cast to the lofty heights ofCarlingford mountain on the morning of the event.Overnight snow was visible on the higher slopesand Controller Alan Gartside made the sounddecision of compelling runners to wear cagoules,Few complaints were heard as a cold wind down inthe village would no doubt prove mucb colder aswe climbed. The bussing of competitors to ibeBlue start ran smoothly and ample time was al-lowed for pre-race preparation. Visible from thestart, runners could be seen struggling up the hill, bent over, bands on knees, up and up. This wasgoing to be a tough race.

Superb areaThe area was superb, largely devoid of line featuresbut with enough for Junior and Novice courses. The contour and rock detail was intricate and, withthe steep slopes, ensured a challenge for all. TheElite courses featured a large Scouish entry wbodominated the results and impressively so. AndyKitchin had a scorcher leaving Jon Musgrave andSteve Nicbolson eight minutes down. AonghusOCleirigh took his fourth irish title only a weekafter returning from the Lebanon. Pre-race fa-vourite Bill Edwards and Colm O'Halloran were2nd and 3rd respectively. Colm had flown in fromequatorial Africa to run and was obviously feelingfew ill effects.

In the women's race Lorna Eades tookfirst for Scotland and Una Creagh stamped hername on the irisb title yet again. Not far behind wasEileen Loughman, continuing her consistent set ofresults this year.

The limes were long on most coursesand, really, if the weather had been wet or misty itwould have beenjusttoodifficult. As it was, manywere out too long but, as against that, it was a goodarea and each leg kept you thinking, Trina Cleary,Phili p Butler and Alan Gartside are to be congratu-lated.

The prizegi ving was held in CarlingfordI Ieritage Centre where, despite the good acousticsthey did need a P.A. system. Organiser LiamConvery kept the show moving and the most disap-poi nti ng aspect of the weekend was the poor atten-dance at this ceremony. In a way it should be thecompetitors' way of saying thanks to the organ-isers and sponsors but I felt it was poorly sup-ported.

The RelaysThe Relays were held on the I: 10 000

Foxes' Rock map and theeventcouldn'thave gonemore smoothly. Instead of the usual single massstart this year there were three, which was better forspectators as tbey could see the different groupsnegotiate the first climb. Cream buns to JamesLogue and Conor Creedon who seemed to be thefastest over this section. Some great entertainmentwas provided on the final slope, especially fromBrian Creedon and Aodan Higgins who' visitedevery control possible!

Ajax are the Irisb men's Relay Champi-ons, lain Rocbford coming through from thirdplace to beat a CNOC team wbicb featured thereturn of Paddy Joe Healy. 3ROC retained thewomen's title with Cork 0 second, but ahead of all

The weekend was thor-oughly enjoyable and the Fyffes involvement un-doubtedly had a lot to do with it.Next year's IOC will be on the new Bank: Holidayweekend, April 30th and May lst, on the Ferman-agh/Cavan border, rub by Fermanagh Orienteers,••••••••••••••••••••••(The map in the centre pages shows AonghusOClcirigh's route in M21 Ewith parts of the routetaken by Colm O'Halloran and Bill Edwards. Thanks to Aonghus and to Colm Rothery for sup-plying this information.)

IOCTRIVIA

**Snow inmid May? Impossible !Afterweeks of reasonable weather, even days ofT-shirtand shorts weather, the week leading up to JOC 93was a worrying time for the organising team. Wehad toyed with the doomsday plan: what if theSlieve Martin experience repeats itself? Don'tworry, it's May, not November. Still, putting outthe controls in the days before the event saw rainand wind, marshes and streams appeared wherebefore there were only reeds. Rising from ourrented house in Carlingford on friday morning, where on Thursday night there had been rain andmist, we saw the mountain white with snow. Put-ting out controls thal afternoon the snow lay deepon the ground and was still falling. The smallwooden pegs marking the control sites were cov-ered up and could only be found by groping in thesnow. Visibility was down to about 20 metres andthe wind was getting up. Anxious organisers, plan-ners and controllers discussed contingency planslate into thenight. What if the weather is appallingtomorrow: will we wait until Sunday or swap therelays and the individual around? "But the toiletsare due to arrive for the relays at 8.30 on Sundayand we can' tcancel them now!''''OK: we go aheadas planned .. ."Anyhow, in the event we were so lucky: Saturdaydawned fine and sunny, the snow receding visiblyfrom the mountain. Cold and windy on the slopes, and with thigh deep snow drifted in places, but dry

10 The Irish Orienteer

and with good visibility. Hail showers held offuntil the control collectors were on themountain,as usual. By Sunday the wind had swung to thesouth west but the sun was making an effort and itstayed dry until the competitors were gone home.Had the P.A. worked it would have been perfect.

* The closest finish at the Champion-ships was between two W13B's from Wilson'sHospital school, separated by only three seconds, while the greatest winning margin was in W35Lwith a gap of 54 minutes between first and second.

* Reactions varied from "The best IrishChampionships ever" to "The best since 1987";"fast and technical, greatstuff", "brilliant courses"and so on, so we can lake it that the event wasgenerally regarded a success by the competitors,

* In the Relays the closest finish was inW 17- where two Cork 0 teams finished first andsecond, separated by only 28 seconds with Mari-anne Hutchinson tantalisingly close to clawingback a 10 minute deficit on the third leg. Thelargest margin was in W13- with 20.02 betweenfirst and second.

* Ursula Mac Pherson (3ROC W35)writes to thank Sean McSweeney and RaymondFinlay for tbeir help after she fell in the forestcoming towards the finish, gashing her ear andrequiring several stitches ... I took a fall at thelOCat Carlingford. When I got to the downhill finalcontrols I opted to wallop a rock with a hefty"thunk" of my head, which resulted in having to geta doctor in Dundalk Hospital to sew my left earback on (Van Gogh eat your heart out). Tworunners stopped to help me, one I didn't know(believed to be Scan McSweeney - Ed.) and whomust have added several minutes to his time andthe otherwas Raymond Finlay (FermO) who stayedwith me until I gotto the First Aid caravan. It's badenough to have to retire yourself but to causesomeone else to have to opt out, close to the finisband in the irish Champs, is painful. Other runnersoffered me jackets and jumpers and assistance. Thespirit of orienteering is alive and well and Lreallyappreciated all the help I received"

(Raymond Finlay must be getting quite a reputa-tion as a good Samaritan: at the Connacht Champshe sacrificed his sweatband to staunch the flow ofblood from the Editor's finger after he gashed it ona barbed wire fence. Fortunately the sweat bandwas red already ...)

* Apart from the first 17 M21E's only 6other competitors broke the 10minuteslkm barrierin the Individual event 1W21E, 1MI9A, IM21Land 3 M35L's. The fastest speed was recorded byAndy Kitcbin in M2lE (6.74 minlkm: 91.00 for13.5 km/500m climb).

* One component of the event whichperheps didn't get enough mention was the map-ping team: anyone who ran there will appreciatewhat a daunting task it was to map the area. Thelong days slogging up and down the mountain weremore thanjustified by the end result. Barry Dalby(castWest Mapping) and the volunteers from 3ROC(not forgetting Setanta Cbairman-at-Iarge ArthurGreen) must be congratulated for their work on themap, as mustPeter O'Neill, Brian Hollinsbead andTed McGrath for their long nights slaving over hotcomputers with OCAD.

* An interesting faeet of the new IDARules (which are based very closely on the BOFRules) is that the Jury for an Irish Championshipsshall consist of three Grade 1controllers who shallif possible come from outside the constituentAssociation in whose area the event takes place. One of these controllers should be the Planner (ifthe planner is a Grade 1controller) - but surely tbePlanner will come from the organising club anrassociation?

* Kristin Federer, running for leiUniversity at the Irish Champs, is a member ofUS Orienteering Team for the World Cbamjships next October. She told TID that the V.Championship areas in upstate New York are verysimilar to Carlingford, with a similar amount ofrock detail, except that (a - the good news) theyaren't as steep but, (b - the bad news) they arcforested. So can we expect to see the Irish teamtraining at night on Carlingford 1"0 reduce thevisibility'!

* Next year's IOC was planned to be onthe UK Bank Holiday weekend at the beginning ofMay. Itnow appears likely that, while the Republicis to get a new Bank Holiday then from 1994, theUK is to lose it because of its connotations withinlernationallabour day which doesn't appeal tothe Conservative government, and have itrelpaccdby another Holiday, possibly in October.

JAN KJELLSTROM INTERNA·TIONAL O·FESTIV AL

The JK suffers from the same problem that allevents which move around from year to yearsuffer from: an inevitable variation in thequality of the orienteering on offer. Last year'sevent at Bigland in the Lake District was going-tobe an. impossible .act to follow. 111is Easter theorienteering could hardly have been more differentwith huge sandy areas of tank wallows and rela-tively flat terrain with lots of tracks. Running speedwas all important, and if you were running as fastas you could, on the delicately-balanced anaerobicthreshold (if you run any harder your brain stopsworkingl) the navigation was: moderately taxing.

Woolmer & Longmoor and Long Valleyare two areas of Army training ground near Alder-shot, and this is where the two Individual eventswere run. There was asmall enough Irish represen-ration.among the41 OObr50 competitors, doubtlessdue in part to the scarcity of entry forms (but witha few thousand people virtually guaranteed tocome, who needs to circulate entry forms widely?).

The 'organisation was aU you couldexpect: impeccable, executed with military preci-sion (well, almost: the start on Day 2 was delayedfor 15 minutes) but any flaws were not apparent tothe competitors. Several complex areas of' pathsfeatured prominently on Day' 1, the difficulty beingto filter out the unnecessary in'formation from themap, to see through the black down to the real map,the coutours underlying the man-made features, and this proved quite hard to do. In some areas thelans forms change so frequently due to tank train-ing that no 'attempt was made to map the-contoursat all: a 20th century case of "Here be Monsters".

Irish performances were pretty much asexpected: ECO's Denis Reidy ran a stormer tofinish 5th on day 1 in M40 only to move down thefield following problems with one control on day2.10 M21E Steve Hale won with Steven Lintonbest of the Irish in 26th', Brian Corbeu Tith, CalmRothery4i stand Billy Reed 43rd. InW2IEHeatherMunro won with Una Creagh 9tb, Julie Cleary26th, Nuala Higgins 30th, E~daoin Morrish 34thand Tara Horan 39th. The highest placed Irish were14 The Irish Orienceer

Shane Burke (1st MIOB), Darren Burke (2ndMIlA), Anne May (2nd W40), Paul Keane (2ndM10B), Danna Cunnane (3rd W21L), JonathanLucey (4thMIIB), Luke Campbell-Crawford (5thMllA), Justin May (5th M35L),. Thomas Gray(5th MllB).

The Relays at Highclere Park were, again, impeccably organised, but the orienteering wasvery easy. While the challenge of a relay involvesmore of the head-to-head race aspect, the quality ofthe orienteering is the reason wby we 're there. Thechangeover field was perfect: a valley with specta-tors on one-side and runners coming and going onthe other, and the PA system worked. And who canforget the sigbt of the lone little girl headingresolutely up the hill to her left from the mass start, oblivious ote the shouts and whistles from thespectators, sticking to her guns, while the otherhundred or so competitors rail off in the otherdirection Perhaps she was right, and they wereall wrong .

Looking back on it, it's the first.TK I'vebeen LQ where Ididn't get to the event centre (inBasingstokcjat all, and that was part of the week-end which was missing. Anyhow, if you're notdoing anything special next Easter (April 1-4) I'll'see you in Hereford. And if you have time on theway from Holyhead. visit the Ironbridge Gorgemuseums at Telford.

1993MUNSTER CHAMPION-SHIPS

TheM unster Champs were held inGaill Beag,Glengarriff, this year and, as expected, thecourses were physically and technicallydemanding. Early morning sunshine gave wayLO hail and rain showers making progresssacross the area even slower.

The longer courses featured a long legwith Gaill Beag in the middle and I think mostpeople chose to go around even though thenumer-ous ridges made contouring extremely -difficultThe start and finish were in the area near Lough

Avaul where juniors could be catered for. On theday, planner David O'Donovan did his best foreveryone and times were close to, those re-cemmended.The Elite class in the mens race was won by JohnFeehan (UCCO) from Brian Corbett (Cork) andSteven Linton (NWOC). Times were spread out, reflecting the punishing nature of this terrain onany mistake. In the Women's Elite MaeveMacPber-son (3ROC) won by 3 minutes from EileenLoughman (CNOC) with Danna Cunnane justbehind. There was, however, a disappointing entryfor this class, symptomatic of a declining standardof competition in the major home events.Good victories on the day went to Alan Bogle(NWOC)inM13, Sean Colter inM45, Faye Pinkerin W19, Carmel Feehan in W45 and Jane Watt(GEN) in W40, Overall, a good event keeping upthe Cork 0 standard of quality events in this area, and weren't the Portaloo's great!

Interprovincial Championships

TfrnaSpid6ige, with its subtle slopesand deceiving details, is one of the best areasin Cork. A planner still bas to putgood coursesin place, and Joe Buckley (Cork) in his firctChampionship attempt, did well. Winning timeswere all ideal and few complaints were robe heard. The narrow roads in the area were barely able tocope with the volume of cars but everyone man-aged to squeeze into a parking spot. The coursesran around the hill on the north of the map and thenwent through the technical areas on the lowerground. The weather was ideal and I don't thinkanyone was out for an excessive amount of time.Brian Corbett showed he is returning to form witha win in M21Eby a5 minute margin. Always sureand steady in these areas he proved he's runningwelltoo. John Feehan and Steven Linton finishedwithin seconds for 2nd ancl3rd. Eileen Loughmanheld off Munster's Darina Cunnane and NualaHiggins to reinforce her position at the top ofwomen's orienteering in this country. In the Interprovincial Champs Munster took thetitle, scoring 256 to Leinster's 187 and Ulster's130. Munster dominated the junior women andsenior men. scoring highly. Obviously. the distanceinvolved in getting to the event reduced represen-tation from Ulster and Leinster. Connacht got 18points but with low representation.

Friday afternoon and a powerful massstart for the initial orienteering event for which wewere allowed 2.5 hours, sort of Norwegian eventmessed up a bit by the ubiquitous sheep who man-aged to chew the clue on control no. 7 - but we allsurvived happily and went home exhausted fordinner ... mmmmm ...followed by a night orion-teering line event using radios with one person atbase in charge of black and white-map directingthree others out in the ruthless night with a radioand no map. that followed by an I.Q., generalknowledge lest and a "time your group on a hypo-thetical 8.5 k run and write it down to be used inevidence later" event,' followed by a raft buildingand rowing excursion in which we were abysmalbut only half as incompetent as most other teamsthanks to Urs who was heroic, and then we snatched5 fours sleep ... zzzzz ...followed by a run upMangerton at 07.30 hrs on Saturday when bi-orythms do not exist but there's a snowline and itmust be reached and crossed and comedown from, which we managed in supportive unison, down theother side to the O-event which brought us all tidilyto the refreshments and the hypothetical, now pain-fully, tangibly real 8.5 kupand down and across toMuckross lake, trying to keep as close to estimatedtime as possible or severe penalties would ensueand then we drank S0 mush tea which didn't reallyrehydrate us but was comforting at that stage andwe piled, all four, into a Canadian canoe to paddle8 k down the Long Range to the Old WeiI' Bridgein the delightful sun and breeze, laughing androaring commands at Una's uneven hand, past thestrange limestone banks where our team dividedpainfully in two, half to run the last bit throughMuckross Forest and the other half to canoe orien-teer (score event) down to Dundag Bay followedby an epicurean meal at the "Bricin" restaurant in

Killarney and never was food so upset as when wehad to gel up and complete a night-O line event inTore woods, which we won ,butl.gethcartbrcakburnjust thinking of if and then we really did sleep for6 hours (should have been seven but the clockswont one hour faster than we did) ... zzzzz ... thenoutin the rude rain and wicked wind for amountainbike mechanical session and maracycle orienteer-ing event followed by a mountain bike obstaclecourse to tesl our co-ordination and humour and arun/walk/struggle/drag the bike event throughLickeen woods to thc ncxtbit which was acycle up,around and above Caragh Lake - "slow downamazing racing Rachel!" - down to' the road and a4k flat cycling time trial to' the place where weshould have made a raft to paddle back to theCentre but we didn't have to in the end and Iwasglad, because the weather earlier had been so badand, anyway experience told us that ten teams, atleast, would have been left dripping on the bank tothis day.

"PHEW! o.u.n.u.t IT'S ALLOVER"

And that was Sunday afternoon. The A-Tewn wasnobly intact and heroically happy and we huggedeach other. We used to think the only things we hudin common were 3ROC and the Good Life. but wewere wrong. Synchronic sisters, we had laughedand gigg.led. been coerced WIdencouraged. speededup, slowed down, grabbed a hold of, pushed andshoved each other for nearly three days and we'lldo it again next year because if wedon't competeand complete we might have to help organise andthat would be bad for our characters and a verymuch more difficuItjob entirely - if you can imag-inc such a Scene.

Team up and join us in '94.

Una Creagh (3ROC) receives herIrish Championship trophy fromPaddy McNamee, Chairman ofFyffes Group (Ireland),the sponsors of lac 93.

Further information from Timmy Flavin, Ardsal-lagh, Youghal, Co. Cork or Donal Dowd, Cap-panalea OEC, Caragh Lake, Glencar, Co. Kerry.

Results: Ist ESB (527.5 points), 2nd PCA (557.5points), 3rd 3ROC (568 points), 4th AJAX (627.5points),

Postscript from Timmy Flavin, who got us all intothis:

The NationaI Adventure Marathon in March wasa huge success WIdwe had many more bookingsthan places available. Two ESB teams went tothe Challengers Trophy at Land's End: the maleteam look a nice trophy and carne 5th overalland the mixed team finished 30th overall. 5th inthe mixed category. The competition wasexcellent with 84 teams taking part but theorganisation was a disaster. with late andinaccurate results, poor timekeeping, many'appeals and, unbelievably, a stage cancelledbecause a checkpoint was sited about 1 km fromits correct location (yes. 1000111). You canimagine the SOUI' feeling this left. Teams thai hadII hard run got no credit and it left them burnt outfor the next sprint stage. We are still arguingover the final placings,

(Thanks to Maeve Macl'herson for the report onthe Adventure Marathon).

The Unseen MapAnyone involved in mapping a new

area or planning amajor event will know howinvolved you can become with the area. Yousee it in all its m~s, discovering new sectionswhere perhaps few people have ever been before, you see the potential for courses, you start toimagine how the competitors will react on the bigday to this control site or that, will they realise thatthere's a magnificent view from here, will theyappreciate the beauty of the forest they are runningthrough? This emotional involvement goes farbeyond the event and can bring back memorieslater of extraordinary moments of excitement ortranquility.

Ernie 'Wilsen expressed some of thefeeling in his article "The Inward Eye" some timeago. This sensation is again captured by JulieCleary in the following piece from the LondonOrienteering Klubbnewsletter, Lokation. Julie drewthe map for a National Event at Leith Hill nearGuildford at the end of February, an event whichattracted over 1800 entries, and spent a great dealof time in the forest checking and fine tuning themap.

"It is almost two years since we first met. Yes, Ihadheard the rumours of how wonderful you were;none better, many said. That first day I felt thatmore people' deserved tomeet you -to see the manysides to your character: complex, gentle, rough. Before that I needed to get to know you be Iter my-self.I brought to you an old friend in Robin Harvey. That glorious summer's day when we walked withyou, we saw. the scars you had received over theyears, the devastation that left parts of you totallyripped open, parts I couldn't bear to see. It had tobe your qualities that people would see, the incred-ible complexities, that you had to offer. For the last year as1have striven to present you inthe best possible way, I have spent every availableminute with you. You have occupied almost all mydaytime-thoughts and many of my sleeping ones

too. r have seen all y~ur moods: gloomy, hidden inclouds of mist; sorrowful, soaking me with yourtears; angry, when you ranted in tempers, flingingthings around to sbow your strength; happy, whenyour joy infected all who came in touch with you;pensive, lost in a haze, unwilling to help me to secyou, ensuring 'that you would see me again in myquest for answers; challenging, daring me to takeyou on, to try and comprehend you - a task in whichIhave yet to succeed. You too saw my many moods: my anger at fallingwhile trying to ensure thatothcrs' comments werewrong, my determination that injury would nothold me back from spending time with you, myfrustration at feeling inadequate in my attempts toexplain how parts of you .should be seen, mysorrow at some new wounds and my wonder whenoverawed by your beauty in softer moments. You introduced me to one of your great friends,Kenny, a wonderful character whom you haveenthralled for years and who cares for you morethan many (Kenny is a sort of hermit who lives inthe middle of the forest in a makeshift house -Ed).And finally, as the day of reckoning approached, you threw at me an your humours, On the Friday, cold and harsh, maybe apprehensive about meet-ing so many new faces, leaving me worried abouttheir reaction if your behaviour didn't change.More gentle on the Saturday, willing to show thefirst visitors in the afternoon some of your betterqualities. Then thankfully on Sunday you unveiled all yourbest. You outshone my expectations, calmed allmy fears, made me so proud ofyou as ilistened toendless compliments. 1walked -away from themel~e during the day to see for myself again thewonderful views, splendour and beauty which Ihave come to appreciate and love.Less than a weeklaterI am again going down to seeyou - this magnetism hasn't worn down and therumours whichl heard originally have been far sur-passed.

Thank you Leith for the wonderful memories."
