People in Ireland constantly talk about the weather because it is so changeable. The fact that we have two or three consecutive wet summers, do not indicate that climate change is happening, two or three decades of mild winters do point to climate change. Small changes in the climate will have a significant impact on Ireland and on other parts of the world. Our earth is getting warmer. Climate change is already taking place. The last 50 years have been the warmest in the last 1300 years in the northern half of the planet. Ireland has been warming more quickly that some other parts of the world. Even though our last winter was the coldest for 30 years, our winters are much milder than they were 50 years ago. Scientists agree that the most important factor influencing climate change is the loading of our atmosphere with man-made ‘greenhouse’ gases. The atmosphere of our planet includes a thin layer of ‘greenhouse’ gases, the main components are; water vapour, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and ozone. Thanks to these, the current average global temperatures are +15°Celcius. This creates a climate favourable to the wonderful diversity of life we find on the planet today. Without these gases the average global temperature would be well below freezing. However, the level of ‘greenhouse’ gases in our atmosphere are rising and this, in turn, is accelerating Global Warming and climate change. The consequences of Global Warming are catastrophic for the planet and humanity. While we are presented daily with differing predictions for the future, we are also warned that it is in our own economic self-interest, if nothing else to take action now. Maybe this fear will motivate people, companies and governments to change. Change based on fear will not last Let us pray that we can all respond to the call of Pope Benedict XVI at the World Youth Day 2010 where he states “I invite all believers to pray to God, the all powerful creator, so that all men and women may take to heart the urgent appeal: if you want to cultivate peace, protect creation” 40 HOURS ADORATION This annual occasion takes place this year on the coming weekend. It will commence on the Saturday evening 18th September after 7.00pm Mass, and will continue on the Sunday after 1.00pm Mass. There will be a conducted Holy Hour from 3.00 - 4.00pm with Adoration continuing until the evening Mass on Sunday at 7.00pm. On Monday 20th September, Adoration will continue all day and conclude with evening Mass and Benediction at 7.00pm. We hope people will make the effort to attend and spend sometime during the 40 Hours Adoration in St Agnes Church. CHURCH GATE COLLECTION The Collection this weekend is in aid of the SIMON COMMUNITY Who help those who are down and out. They call on your generosity. PAKISTAN COLLECTION We wish to thank our Parishioners for their wonderful generosity to assist the people of Pakistan. Even in a recession at home, they contributed the sum of €18,696. Many Thanks to the people of St Agnes Parish. All People That On Earth Do Dwell 1. All people that on earth do dwell, sing to the Lord with cheerful voice; serve Him with gladness, praise Him well, come now before Him and rejoice. 2. Enter His gates with songs of praise, come to His courts, approach with joy; honour and bless Him all our days, Gladly for god our lives employ. Lord Accept the Gifts we offer 1. Lord, accept the gifts we offer, at this Eucharistic feast; Bread and wine to be transformed now, Through the action of thy priest. Take us too Lord and transform us, Be thy grace in us increased 2. May our souls be pure and spotless, As this host of wheat so fine, May all stain of sin be crushed out, Like the grape that forms the wine, As we, too, become partakers. In this sacrifice divine. Sweet Heart of Jesus 1. Sweet heart of Jesus, Fount of love and mercy, Today we come, thy blessing to implore; O touch our hearts, So cold and so ungrateful, And make them Lord, Thine own for evermore. 2. Sweet heart of Jesus, Make us know and love thee, Unfold to us The treasures of your grace; That so our hearts, From things on earth uplifted, May long alone To gaze upon your face. Now Thank We All Our God 1. Now thank we all our God, With heart and hands and voices, Who wondrous things has done, In whom the world rejoices, Who from our mother’s arms, Has blessed us on our way, With countless gifts of love, And still is ours today. 2. O may this bounteous God, Through all our lives be near us, With ever joyful hearts, And blessed peace to cheer us, And keep us in his grace, And guide us when perplexed, And free us from all ills, In this world and the next.
