Climate and Energy GIT Meeting 2012

NGO General remarks – will the Danish Energy Agreement Promote Growth and

Exports? – Where and where not?

Søren Dyck-Madsen The Danish Ecological Council

The Energy Agreement

• An Ambitious and front running Energy agreement

• “The Danish showroom” will be a reality

• Crosses point of no return in 2020 = the Danish future will be renewables and energy savings

• The Danish Energy Agreement is noticed abroad – supporting exports

• (Danish exports already in a positive situation with growth of 3.1 %)

The Danish Ecological Council “Climate and Energy GIT Meeting 2012” – UM 11.10.12

The Energy System Design as Export Potential

• How to integrate Renewables/wind and PV’s in the energy system

• District heating will need to be better designed for flexibility reasons

• Smart buildings and cities are necessary

• Market systems for balance and regulation will be enforced

• The Danish solutions will be designed to match national and regional renewables potentials

• Danish actors do build on trust and networking

The Danish Ecological Council “Climate and Energy GIT Meeting 2012” – UM 11.10.12

Wind turbines

• Near coast wind turbines with new investors will provide a show room

• Kriegers Flak will be a completely new way to combine wind production and balancing and market integrations

• New models for on-shore wind is popping up – public involvement and acceptance might be the buzz word – once again

• The most important new export quality will be the showroom for integration of wind power in the Energy System

The Danish Ecological Council “Climate and Energy GIT Meeting 2012” – UM 11.10.12

District Heating

• New generations of low temperature district heating with storage / boosting etc.

• Combinations using the richness of electricity when the wind blows in the district heating system will be the future

• Large and small heat storage systems to come

• New effective pipes to be used for supplying low energy buildings

The Danish Ecological Council “Climate and Energy GIT Meeting 2012” – UM 11.10.12

Energy Efficiency and Savings

• Industry energy savings is already a Danish specialty that improves Danish competitiveness

• Danish obliged energy distribution companies do have the experience to export their knowledge

• Strict national regulation and support schemes do trigger energy and resource efficient technology

The Danish Ecological Council “Climate and Energy GIT Meeting 2012” – UM 11.10.12

Buildings and Cities

• The most ambitious Building Codes in the World with the 2020 Class – better than the Passive House

• Everything have to be energy effective and buildings have to be smart prosuming with the energy system

• Export potential for: Pumps, hot water solutions, windows, insulation, energy producing materials, elevators, ventilation with heat recovery, building integrated PV’s, solar heat panels etc.

• Danish architects know to use that for projects abroad

The Danish Ecological Council “Climate and Energy GIT Meeting 2012” – UM 11.10.12

Smart Grid

• Efficient use of fluctuating renewables requires a smart system – to use “fresh” energy when it is available and to use stored energy when “fresh” energy is not available

• Price signals and “hubs” will be the future

• New markets will emerge for balancing the systems – Denmark can become the global expert in Smart Grid solutions

• District heating also needs to be “smart”(er)

The Danish Ecological Council “Climate and Energy GIT Meeting 2012” – UM 11.10.12

Biomass, Biogas and Biofuels

• Second generation biofuels might be an export possibility even though the energy agreement does not provide new incentives

• Biogas and synthetic gasses will be needed

• Fuel cells on biogas or hydrogen might get a renaissance

The Danish Ecological Council “Climate and Energy GIT Meeting 2012” – UM 11.10.12

Water Technology and waste water treatment

• Not covered by the Energy Agreement

• Denmark as a small country can go for “smaller” costumers - China

• Water will be a shortage – industries will have to reuse

• Danish water and wastewater treatment technology already has a world market

The Danish Ecological Council “Climate and Energy GIT Meeting 2012” – UM 11.10.12

Where not

• The Danish smart and flexible Energy system will create solutions based on Danish potentials, challenges and solutions

• If these Danish energy system conditions do not fit export markets – solutions have to be redesigned to fit those markets

The Danish Ecological Council “Climate and Energy GIT Meeting 2012” – UM 11.10.12
