I hope the holidays were filled with all you love, and that you all managed to re- energize for what 2019 has in store for our industry and our association.As 2018 Vice President, I had an opportunity to serve with, and under some of the greatest minds in our industry. The last four months of 2018 brought a whirlwind of activity, with the transition and training of our new Executive Officer, Kristen Egelston, and completion of Phase One of the CRBRA Headquarters remodel.One of the goals set forth by CRBRA’s new Strategic Plan is to create more micro-volunteer opportunities. It will be a priority for me this year to see more of our members take advantage of the opportunity to get involved with CRBRA. Recognizing that many of us have so much going on with work and family it’s hard to carve out time to volunteer, our committees and councils will be identifying new ways for members to micro-volunteer. It could mean participating in the planning of one event or volunteering on the day of – it could also mean pitching in during Phase Two of the remodel this spring. January was a busy month at CRBRA HQ with events thanking All IN campaign contributors – whether it was the donation of time, materials or dollars. We are profoundly grateful for the generosity our members showed during Phase One. A special thank you to the Building Committee, led by 2019 Vice President Gregg Biche. Kristen did not waste anytime and jumped in with both feet to decorate the interior, which is both warm and
inviting. I hope you will all stop in for a visit soon.January 23rd brought our installation dinner where your 2019 Executive Board and Board of Directors was installed. Always well attended, this event was held at Browns Revolution Hall in Troy. Celebrating our CRBRA leaders with dinner, a live band, and dancing made for a great time. It was so good to see so many of you having fun.We also kicked off a three-part Sandler Training Education Series on January 29. The series is designed to help participants shorten their sales cycle, increase profit margins, and conduct more of the business they enjoy. I can’t think of a better way to invigorate your business during this cold winter. Don’t worry if you missed the first session, you can still attend the other two on Febuary 26 and March 26. RSVP to [email protected] and March offer many opportunities to network and collaborate with your CRBRA colleagues, from mixers and PWB volunteering events to IBS in Las Vegas and the NAHB Certified Aging in Place (CAPS) courses being offered in March at the HQ.

It’s a New Year, new Building, new EO – so it’s fitting to say our theme for 2019 is “new directions.” Too often, the words “new” and “change” have a negative connotation. There’s an old saying “Nothing changes if nothing changes.” Simple, yet true. When you respect
the history and have the expert opinions of those that participated in it, as CRBRA does, it makes this new-ness an opportunity for CRBRA to be nimble and explore new directions. My hope is that you embrace new and change with me as I think it will spark excitement, ideas and innovation for all of us.
Since the last issue, we’ve bid Pam Krison farewell and good luck in her retirement, put the finishing touches on phase one of the CRBRA HQ renovation and installed our 2019 Executive Board and Board of Directors – on top of the everyday business of keeping the association
running smoothly. This year’s Installation Celebration was a blast. Check out page xx for photos. Your 2019 leadership team is fantastic and has already stepped up to the plate. I have every confidence that they’ll make you proud this year.
In Ken’s column, he expressed his desire to get more people involved in CRBRA. I echo that desire and invite you to get involved. Whether you’ve been in the business five months, five years or 20 years – there really is something for everyone at CRBRA. We thrive thanks to the talents our diverse membership brings to the table. If you don’t know how to get involved, a good place to start is the Calendar at CRBRA.com. We have a variety of mixers, education sessions and Council events going on each month. Or, feel free to call the office and talk to us about your interests. We mean it when we say we want you to take a greater role in CRBRA!

The kitchen is the hub of every home. It’s where your family meals are made, party guests congregate, and the kids pull up a seat at the island to get their homework done. The kitchen is the focal point in most new construction homes. "As a builder, most of our marketing materials show the kitchen as the 'centerpiece' of the home. From my experience at the Parade of Homes, I would say at least 50-60 percent of comments from visitors is about the kitchen, whether it be size and layout or materials and appliances used,” said Brandon Marini, Director of Marketing at Marini Homes.
According to the Houzz & Home Renovation Trends Study released in June 2018, the kitchen was for at least the third straight year, the most popular room in the house for remodeling. The study also found that median spending on kitchen remodels increased by 10-percent in 2017 and had the highest return on investment at 83-percent.
Mitchell Parker, Houzz writer, compiled the following list of 2019 kitchen design trends based on Houzz data, home designphotos, past articles and interviews with professional designers.

Bennett Contracting’s designer Justina Auer agrees with Houzz trends three and four, sharing “The days of white
cabinetry are numbered, which I like to think is due to designers just being over the white Shaker trend. We’re seeing a lot of wood on wood mixes, especially with client’s wanting wood floors and a warmer, less sterile look.”

6. Emerald and deep teal islands
“In our area, we do see some clients being more venturous with pops of color, but they’re staying closer to the neutral side with deep grays or navy on their cabinetry for accents,” said Justina Auer, Designer at Bennett Contracting. Auer said she hopes to have a brave client who will try this trend, as did designers at Capitol Kitchens & Baths.

“Woodland offers a unique Walnut drawer box upgrade. The inserts are dark walnut, which looks awesome on a white front cabinet,” said Adrienne Petroski at Capitol District Kitchens & Baths.

Eva Andersen, Designer for Teakwood Builders said, “Black is an excellent, timeless choice for a kitchen. It covers so many styles, from a distressed and beat up farmhouse look, to clean and contemporary, to a classic, estate-level lacquer. I have been using black in kitchens
for over a decade, and I see no end in sight. It’s great to do the entire kitchen in black, or just a few accent pieces, depending on the client’s wishes. I never tire of it, there always ways to make is seem fresh, while remaining classic.”
