Nottingham’s Homeboys street food is crowned the best in Europe after beating 21 finalists in Sweden.

Pete Hewitt, 30, runs a local street food business under the name Homeboys, based in Nottingham Street Food Club in the Victoria Centre, Nottingham.

He also trades at festivals and events in Nottingham, Derby, Birmingham, Sheffield and Leicester from his converted 1978 Chevrolet truck which is becoming well known in the area, serving freshly cooked Asian fusion style food with Pete’s trademark flavours and presentation.

Pete was born and bred in Nottingham and lives in Clifton. Graduating in graphic design from Bristol UWE, Pete was inspired by Bristol’s foodie scene. His grandfather and great-grandfather were chefs and so cooking is a family obsession. After graduating, Pete entered BBC Masterchef in 2015, working his way through to the finals.

Pete set up his Homeboys business the same year, selling his food firstly from a gazebo, then from the restored Chevy truck. Pete was

invited to be a permanent part of the Nottingham Street Food Club in Victoria Centre, Nottingham when this was set up in 2016.

Encouraged by the public response to his food, Pete entered the British Street Food Awards competition run by the award-winning food journalist and broadcaster Richard Johnson which is now in its 10th year.

Pete was overall champion of the 2019 Midlands area heats, and competed in the national finals in London in September 2019 against winners of other regional heats, winning Best Snack category.

On a recent weekend (28th and

29th September) he competed for the European Street Food Awards finals in a converted warehouse near the waterfront in Malmo, Sweden, against 21 other finalists from many hundreds of entrants in 15 countries.

Entries were judged by Sweden’s first female Michelin Star chef Titti Qvarnstrom, the 2-Michelin Star Malmo chef Daniel Berlin and local food writer Karin Ericson.

Again, Pete won the Best Snack category but in choosing the overall winner, the judges were unanimous in picking Homeboy’s Pete Hewitt, who is now European Champion.

Pete said, “It definitely makes all the hard work worthwhile.”

Pete’s award-winning dishes were:

Grilled Prawns Wild cold water prawns, preserved lemon and green chilli kosho, house blended shichimi served with pork fat-grilled sourdough

Crispy Pig’s Head Red braised smoked ham hock and jowl nuggets, sauce gribiche salad

Clifton Good Companions is a charity supporting isolated, vulnerable and lonely older people in the Clifton, Wilford and Silverdale areas of Nottingham.

We have been in operation for almost 20 years and now provide 4 drop-in friendship groups around Clifton each week plus we offer a home-visiting scheme, also run by volunteers, for our residents who are unable to easily leave their own homes.

Activities offered to our group-attendees include trips out each season - in the summer 30 of us

took a river cruise with afternoon tea on the Nottingham Princess, and we will shortly be taking a coach trip out to East Bridgford Garden Centre: this has been made possible by a very kind donation by the Wilford and Clifton Facebook Selling Page.

We run a pantomime excursion each year to Nottingham Playhouse and also have an annual Christmas party, open to all older residents of the Clifton, Wilford and Silverdale areas.Apart from myself, all supporters are volunteers and we have the fantastic support of local companies in terms of various kind

and generous donations.

As you can appreciate, volunteers are the life-blood of the work that Good Companions undertakes. So, our question to you is: do YOU have a few hours to spare each week to either support the work at one or more of our friendship groups, or to be a much-valued home-visitor? Activities that volunteers undertake include welcoming visitors to one of our friendship groups and generally talking to and listening to people, serving drinks, supporting people in and out of taxis, assisting with games of bingo, helping to staff

one-off events, or home-visiting for an hour or so each week as a befriender. Volunteers tell us that they enjoy their roles as it allows them to get out and meet new people, and give support to others. You’ll need to be a ‘people person’ who is happy to both listen and share your own experiences.

Please phone Sarah on 07881 826224 or email Good Companions on [email protected]. We can then send out an application pack; all of our volunteers go through an Enhanced DBS check (also known as a police check) prior to commencing duties.

Read On Nottingham has teamed up with the leading independent children’s publisher in the UK, Usborne Books, to gift every single child starting Year 7 at The Nottingham Emmanuel School and The Farnborough Academy a copy of Scavengers by Darren Simpson.

The literacy-focused project aims to make pupils’ transition to secondary school as smooth as possible by helping them discover the joy of reading.

The pupils from Clifton read the first chapter of Scavengers at the end of their primary school summer term. Upon arriving at secondary school in September, every pupil received a free copy of the book to keep and enjoy at home.

Scavengers is the story of a boy called Landfill, who has lived his whole life as a scavenger, running with wooflings, swimming with turtles and feasting on whatever he can catch.

The author of the book, Darren Simpson, visited The Farnborough Academy and The Nottingham Emmanuel School recently to engage pupils further in the benefits of reading and writing. Darren hosted an assembly, signed books

and launched a brand-new creative writing competition, exclusive to the pupils taking part in the programme, in which they can win up to £30 worth of book tokens.

Read On Nottingham is a campaign led by the National Literacy Trust in partnership with Small Steps Big Changes and the National Lottery Community Fund. It works at community level to bring children and families a love of reading and improve their life chances.

Emily Landsborough, Manager of Read On Nottingham, said: “We know that pupils’ love of reading is highest at the end of primary school, but drops off when they start secondary school. We hope that the students at The

Nottingham Emmanuel School and The Farnborough Academy have been inspired to read for pleasure outside the classroom and we can’t wait to read their competition entries!”

Darren Simpson, author of Scavengers, said: “Visiting schools is one of my favourite parts of being a children’s author. The pupils at The Farnborough Academy and the Nottingham Emmanuel School were so insightful, witty and engaged, and it was very moving to see them getting excited about Scavengers. Helping children to read regularly for pleasure can have huge implications for their confidence and future prospects.

Toni Slee, Learning Resource

Centre Manager at The Farnborough Academy, said: “This has been a fantastic opportunity for our Year 7 pupils. They have really enjoyed reading Scavengers in their library lessons and they thoroughly enjoyed his visit. He did a fabulous job of getting them to make sense of what they were reading and where Darren’s ideas came from, which will in turn help them develop their own stories. It has been a brilliant project which we are all incredibly happy to be part of.”

Megan Farrow-Griffiths, English Teacher at The Nottingham Emmanuel School, said “The students really enjoyed meeting Darren. There was a real buzz and excitement about it all day and I had great feedback from other teachers too, who were all impressed with how Darren was able to engage the whole year group!”

Rosie in Year 7 at The Farnborough Academy said: “The event was very, very inspirational!”

Another pupil, Scarlett, said: “It has inspired me to write a book!”

10 Local News Bygones

He was a player integral in forging success for club and country but it was under the stewardship of Brian Clough at both Derby County and Nottingham Forest that Archie Gemmill emerged as a true star of the game and an inspiration to colleagues. WILL PRICE recalls the Scotsman’s glittering career and how he first met the legend that was Clough and his trusted talent spotter Peter Taylor

TO ALAN BALL senior, drinks in the Pack Horse Hotel, Bolton one Sunday evening in September 1970 promised to be an occasion to savour.

The Preston North End boss arrived with the club’s most valuable asset, Archie Gemmill, a feisty 23-year-old Scot who was on a promise – a £70,000 promise to League champions Everton, where the manager’s son, Alan Ball junior, reigned supreme.

Like a Roman emperor, Ball was licking his lips at the prospect of giving his guests from Derby County the thumbs down, particularly that brash Brian Clough.

Ego and curiosity had brought him to introduce Gemmill to meet Clough, his right-hand man Peter Taylor and Derby secretary Stuart Webb. Introduce and tantalise, as in ‘Here’s something special, but you’re not getting him – he’s out of your league’.

Ball was going to dine out on this one for years... ‘Did I ever tell you the one about the time I stuck it to Cloughie? Yeah, you should have seen his face drop’.

Although it took a brave or foolish

man to think of facing down Clough in his prime, Ball told the men from the East Midlands confidently: “Archie’s got everything he wants – he’s signing for Everton.”

Indeed, the terms proposed by Harry Catterick, the overlord at Goodison Park, were excellent. A four-year contract with a £5,000 signing-on fee, and weekly wages rising from £225 to £250, £275 and eventually £300.

Clough dismissed Ball as an irrelevance, shooting him a look of contempt across a table top of lager, wine and, for the player, orange juice.

Gemmill was mesmerised as Clough went about his mission, the potent art of persuasion, recalling: “It wasn’t just a case of the gaffer saying I would help make Derby a better team, but the matter-of-fact way he insisted the club would win the League and cups..."

Educated Archie Remember, Remember...It is remembered mostly for fireworks and gunpowder plots. But what has November meant to the people of Nottingham in the past. RAY TUNKS takes a personal look back at what the eleventh month held in store locally and globally

IF you are lighting your own bonfire this month or just attending a communal event, spare a thought for Guy Fawkes on or around November 5. The shenanigans and farce that have emerged during the Brexit fiasco should be a timely reminder that the gunpowder plotter, far from being a pariah charged with treason, should in fact have been hailed as a national hero, not a traitor. Still, the benefit of hindsight eventually may prevail for his efforts to detonate the Houses of Parliament but in the meantime, his effigy still burns annually around the country...

Fuel consumption figures for Citroën C1 Range: MPG (l/100km): Combined 51.6 (5.5) to 58.9 (4.8), CO2 emissions: 85–98g/km. The grouped figures shown above show the lowest and highest performing results for this model. Consult your dealer for information on speci¬fic examples. The fuel consumption you achieve, and CO2 produced, in real world conditions will depend upon a number of factors: including the accessories fitted (post registration), variations in weather, driving styles and vehicle load. There is a new test WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure) used to measure fuel consumption and CO2 figures. These CO2 ¬figures, however, are based on the outgoing test cycle NEDCeq (New European Driving Cycle Equivalent), calculated using an EC correlation tool which converts WLTP figures to NEDC. These figures are used to calculate tax for first registration. You should only compare fuel consumption and CO2 figures with other vehicles tested using the same technical standard.

On the 9th October the NG11 Clean Champions joined with Highways England for another incredible and successful collaborative event, cleaning up the Clifton A453 and beyond with Poppies!

Yet again with the sun on our backs, 45 wonderful NG11 Clean Champions plus 7 fantastic junior litter champions, including a visiting Pikachu (from Pokémon) set out to clear litter from NG11.

Residents from Wilford, Clifton, Clifton Village, Silverdale, Lark Hill Retirement Village, Barton Green and The Grove Community with local CPO Jon Hartley, Cllrs

Andrew Rule, Roger Steel, Rebecca Langton and MP Lilian Greenwood, a team from Nottingham Trent University and a team of 28 marvellous eager Highways England volunteers collected, a total of 81 bags of litter from 20 designated routes within NG11 - Awesome!

And how fitting, Highways England have sown poppies along the grass bank between Crusader island and Garrett Grove; a tribute for this part of the A453 - Remembrance Way - named in honour of 453 British service personnel killed in combat in Afghanistan, including Clifton’s own Kieron Hill.

A big thank you to all that took part, including:

- All the lovely volunteers - Cllr Andrew Rule and Roger Steel (for the introduction to Highways England) - Rhian Sharpe (Highways England co-ordinator) - Tony Pap (Nottingham Street team) for weeding 7 pedestrian crossings on Clifton Lane - from Lark Hill Retirement Village to Crusader island – now weed-free and smart! - Paul Brown’s Clifton Street Team - for collecting the bags so promptly after the event

- Karen Connors – assisting and keeping me on track! - NG11 team leaders: Pat Huxley, Kevin Bowles and Jennifer Abercrombie - Peter Bell (Step Out Stay Out) with son Jack as “Pikachu Pokémon” - Cllr Kevin Clarke for taxiing volunteers - Tesco Express: Muffins for all - McDonalds and Harvester pub: Coffee for all - The Crusader pub: Car-parking

Teamwork at its best - until the next time!

Love NG11 – Let’s keep it clean!

What are Air Source Heat Pumps? They use heat energy from the outside air to warm a refrigerant gas which when compressed inside the unit is heated – normally up to 70-80oC. This hot gas is then transferred to the fluid in the heating system which then heats radiators, underfloor heating and the coil in the hot water cylinder.

How will I benefit from a Heat Pump? • High efficiency systems offering substantial fuel and cost savings over oil, LPG, solid fuel and electric boilers. • A renewable heating product reducing carbon emissions and able to utilise renewably generated electricity. • Improved levels of comfort and maintain a stable indoor temperature. • Little / no user intervention – runs on electricity with no fuel deliveries • In many cases the system will be largely or fully paid for by the government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) – reimbursing your

investment over a 7 year period. • Minimal maintenance required • Uses a fuel which is aligned with the UK’s energy strategy which is increasingly moving away from dwindling fossil fuels

How can UK Renewable heating help? • We are specialist and an accredited Mitsubishi air source heat pump installer & cover the whole of the East Midlands. • Detailed knowledge of heat pump operation, installation and integration with other technologies. • Installation & maintenance experience of the Mitsubishi Ecodan system. • We offer free surveys, consultations and advice. • Sound and unbiased advice – if a heat pump is not suitable for your property, we will tell you. • We guarantee no pressurised sales.

Pictured here is Prograss owner Tony Grice presenting Julie Fowler of Edwalton, with some Champagne and Wine (supplied to Prograss by Weavers Wine Merchants) as she became the 1000th active customer who’s lawn

Prograss look after. Prograss are Nottingham’s premier independent lawn company and were originally formed back in 2012 by Tony and, his then, business partner Duncan Ross of Duncan Ross Gardens.

Tony said ‘ When myself and Duncan started we wanted to set up an independent competitor to the largely franchise dominated lawncare market which would add the qualities of customer care and attention to detail that seemed to be missing from these companies. It was I admit a slow start and at the time getting to 1000 plus lawns was beyond my wildest dreams but as word got around about the service we offered the customer numbers snowballed into what they are today. The ambition going forward is to be able to add to this without losing our identity for hands on customer service and detail that only an independent business can. Investment has been made to cope with extra lawns by adding 3 more members of staff and purchasing extra vans and high quality machinery to enable us to continue offering the same standard of workmanship and reliability that our customers are used to.’

In 2016 however Duncans landscaping business was going

from strength to strength and taking most of his time so Tony and Duncan came to an amicable arrangement enabling Duncan to concentrate fully on Duncan Ross Gardens. His technical knowledge and experience however was a vital part in the early stages of Prograss.

Prograss is now run by Tony and his wife Rachael and based in Bingham, the business is perfectly placed to look after lawns of all sizes over the Nottingham area. Services include fertilisers, weed and moss control and what we call the mechanical side of lawncare which is aeration, scarification and overseeding including seed drilling.

They are also overlooked by qualified Agronomist Joe Kinder so every problem Prograss encounter can be professionally and personally dealt with.

If you would like Prograss to come and do a free, no obligation lawn health check and quotation then contact us on 01949 837367 or visit us on pro-grass.com.

As the season turns colder and the air turns crisper, transforming the landscape from all the orangey colours of autumn on the way into winter, you may feel obliged to spend more time cuddled up indoors with a cuppa tea.

However, for those of you who enjoy a brisk nature walk and the fresh air of the outdoors (whilst cloaked in a chunky coat and wellies), there are still many opportunities to explore the great outdoors. Here we have listed some great nature walks, paths and reserves to visit and explore wildlife in your area:

River Trent Wildlife Corridor Holme Pit Clifton, Clifton Wood and Clifton grove, situated alongside the River Trent, together make up an official Nature Reserve area. The path next to the river is bordered by woodland that grows up the embankment. It’s a popular area for many species woodland birds, wildlife and wildflowers. Herons, Sparrowhawks and Buzzards are also regularly spotted here. Near to Holme Pit you can see remains of buildings dated from the 18th Century that are associated with Clifton Hall.

Attenborough Nature Reserve One of the most popular nature areas in Nottingham, The Attenborough Nature reserve was a former pit that was opened by renowned broadcaster, David Attenborough in 1966. The site consists of a huge three-mile walk containing many species of birds, insects and other wildlife, it even has some horses! Dogs are also welcome here.

Wilford Claypit Part of Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, the disused claypit has a variety of habitats including marshland, grassland and woodland. There are many species

of plants and wildlife here, including Emperor Dragonflies, Smooth Newts and toads. Here there are walking trail footpaths open to the public at all times.

Wilwell Farm Nature Reserve Deemed as one of the best wildflower sites in Nottinghamshire, the reserve hosts more than 230 plant species. There are around 20 different species of butterfly that have been recorded here, including gatekeeper and small skipper, plus a large number of tree species.

Rushcliffe Country Park Set in the beautiful countryside,

Rushcliffe Country Park is an ideal place to get away from it all. With a network of over 8 kilometres of footpaths, grassland, conservation and landscape areas, the park is the perfect place for walking, jogging, spotting wildlife and dog walking. It also has great facilities for children.

Wrap up warm and explore with a nature walk near you
