29. SAFETY JOHN DROZD, 315-772-3022 Winter is upon us, which gives us plenty of activities to participate in. It is also one of the busiest holiday travel periods of the year. Here are some quick tips to keep you safe: • WINTER SPORTS: Keep all equipment in good shape. Broken parts, sharp edges and split wood invite injuries. Dress warmly for conditions. Check areas for bare spots, holes and other obstructions that might cause injury. Warm up, stretch gently and cool down after activities. • HYDRATION: You can become dehydrated just as easily during the winter months as in the summer ones. Heated indoor air tends to dry the skin, increasing need for more fluid intake. Consume at least sixty-four ounces of water-based beverages throughout the day; more if you participate in strenuous winter activities. • DRIVING AND WINTER STORMS: Be aware of conditions where you are starting from, your final destination and everywhere in between. Heed advisories and forecasts and adjust your plans. If stranded, use the survival items and tips presented during the October CLIF. Stay with your car. Do not try to walk for help during a blizzard.
