Years o mergers, acquisitions, and ad hoc growth can
saddle organizations with a hodgepodge o systems, sot-
ware, and data that drain IT resources, undercut worker
productivity, and compromise business agility. To succeed in
todays tricky economy, business and technology leaders are
working together closely to wring out ineiciencies, reduce ixed
operating expenses, and ree up assets to invest in innovation.
Traditional enterprise desktop environments are undergoing
scrutiny because o growing costs or support and maintenance,
compounded by the necessity or requent security patches and
sotware upgrades. At the same time, end-user desktops have
become increasingly diicult to manage as the explosion o remote
and mobile workers continues to transorm the client computing
landscape. These users require immediate access to sophisticated
enterprise systems rom a diverse range o client devices, while IT
groups must contend with time-consuming client management
tasks such as deploying and patching images, managing hardware
transitions, and ensuring client security.
Faced with these demands and todays budget constraints,many organizations are exploring virtual client models. This
approach helps simpliy operations and get client assets under
control through a undamental change in perspective: instead o
managing physical desktops and hardware devices in various
locations, administrators enable access to data, settings, applica-
tions, operating systems, and IT policies that are uniquely associ-
ated with each user. This inormation, reerred to as the users
digital identity, resides in a central location on the network and
allows individuals to access and work with their data rom any
supported device.

Unlike previous server-based comput-
ing models, this ramework takes advan-
tage o client virtualization and desktop
streaming technologies to expand the
scope o client unctionality, lexibility,
and devices. Technology advances such
as Teradici PC-over-IP technology, com-
posite images, and client hypervisors are
making virtual client computing an
increasingly attractive option. These
strides enable organizations to boost pro-
ductivity and innovation by providing end
users with comprehensive unctionality
and seamless mobile access, while simul-
taneously helping IT groups to centralize,
streamline, and simpliy client manage-
ment and security.
Evaluating dEll flExiBlEcomputing options
The Dell Flexible Computing ramework
oers a suite o products and services that
are designed to simpliy management by
enabling a customized user experience
with server-based control o digital identi-
ties. Dell oers three service-backed client
architectures that can be integrated into
existing inrastructure to centralize end-
user resources.
Designed or stationary environments
where manageability and security are critical,
the Dell On-Demand Desktop Streaming
(ODDS) solution optimizes the user com-
puting experience through local process-
ing. With ODDS, the users data resides
on centralized servers that stream the
data to local, typically diskless comput-
ers. Client storage resides on the server.
Each diskless desktop boots rom net-
worked storage but retains processor
and user interace unctions.
Delivering the capabilities o a high-
perormance workstation in a one-to-one
relationship between a local user and a
remote workstation, the Dell Dedicated
Remote Workstation (DRW) solution
allows physical workstations to be moved
away rom sensitive locations such as hos-pital operating rooms or securities trading
loors. The entire physical workstation is
located centrally, and the user accesses the
display through a portal device.
O the three, the Dell Virtual Remote
Desktop (VRD) solution is applicable to
the widest range o usage scenariosand
is particularly well suited to highly mobile
workers who may use a variety o devices
rom dierent locations. By leveraging
VMware or Citrix sotware, it gives users
access to server-based virtualized desk-
tops rom a wide range o devices, includ-
ing desktops, laptops, thin clients, and
PDAs (see Figure 1). Storage and proces-
sor unctionality are oloaded to the
server and virtualized, while the client
device perorms lightweight graphics pro-
cessing and user interace unctions.
The Dell VRD approach utilizes an array
o optimized hardware and sotware plat-
orms designed to reduce the complexity
o managing traditional physical desktops
including the Dell FX100 remote access
device, Dell OptiPlex desktops or thin
clients, Dell Latitude laptops with
Latitude ON technology, Dell Precision
workstations, 11th-generation Dell PowerEdge
servers, and Dell EqualLogic PS Series
Internet SCSI (iSCSI) storage area net-
work (SAN) arrays. The 11th-generation
PowerEdge server amily has been opti-
mized or virtualized environments, includ-
ing increased memory capacity, highly
integrated I/O, the advanced Intel Xeon
processor 5500 series architecture, and
an integrated architecture. The EqualLogic
PS Series provides a high-perormance
iSCSI SAN built on ully redundant, hot-
swappable hardware, and incorporates
automatic load balancing, snapshots, and
replication.
By combining centralized control with
enhanced mobility, the Dell VRD model
enables organizations to simpliy manage-
ment, strengthen security, and capitalize
on a growing number o complementary
supporting technologies. It can oer
numerous advantages or IT groups sup-
porting an increasingly distributed work-
orce and looking to simpliy clientmanagement tasks. Storing and managing
virtualized desktops on the server helps
avoid the need to provision and manage
individual client devices. Basic manage-
ment tasks such as patches, upgrades, and
support can be handled quickly and ei-
ciently by centrally storing applications
and data. In addition, because virtual desk-
tops are centrally located, they can be
quickly backed up and recoveredhelping

to accelerate recovery time and enhance
business continuity.

The Dell VRD architecture is designed to
eectively and eiciently address many o
the key client management challenges that
organizations ace, including hardware
transition complexity, image management,
security, and regulatory compliance.

Client hardware changes can be diicult
on both end users and IT groups: user pro-
ductivity typically suers until the replace-
ment system can be personalized, and
help-desk support can be a drain on IT
resources. An immediate advantage o
moving to the Dell VRD approach is that
the inrastructure can be upgraded inde-
pendently o the client image, helping
minimize user disruption. Users can still
beneit rom hardware perormance
enhancements, but the image and amiliar
computing experience remain the same.
This approach can also beneit OS
transitions, including migrations to the
Microsot Windows 7 OS. Updates can
be applied easily in the data center, and
users can be migrated without orced
changes to their desktop hardware or
interruptions in their worklow. I a prob-
lem does occur, IT organizations can
promptly reset users to their previous OS
environments until the problem is resolved.
The centralized environment allows alter-
native application delivery methods to be
created or applications that may still
require a legacy OS to run.

Many IT groups struggle with image man-
agement when traditional PCs are rereshed.
An administrator must open up the OS,
insert new drivers, close the OS, and test
to make sure that the drivers have not
broken an application requirement or a
linkage. IT sta must also manage interac-
tions among applications as images and
clients change. In a large organization with
multiple ongoing reresh cycles, adminis-
trators may need to constantly validate and
revalidate images to help avoid unintended
interactions or impact on applications.
The Dell VRD approach helps save
time and eort because the image does
not change when the underlying hardware
changes, and the drivers or each client
are separate rom the OS. Also, most
applications can be virtualized, helping
reduce dependencies on the base OS and
allowing added lexibility. Using virtualiza-
tion to decouple images rom hardware
helps to simpliy the way an organization
manages images, streamline the process
o rereshing the computing environment,
and reduce the IT workload associated
with change management.

Every device that stores inormation also
carries the risk o loss, thet, and corruption
o critical data. Organizations also ace
increasingly stringent regulatory require-
ments related to data security. These
requirements can be particularly diicult to
address when the client data and context
are located in the ield, where mobile
devices are more likely to be lost or stolen
and getting mobile users back up and run-
ning can be more time-consuming than or
users closer to IT resources.
By centralizing data on servers rather
than spreading it across individual desk-
tops, the Dell Flexible Computing rame-
work helps guard against data loss rom
unauthorized access, malicious attack,
ailed PC hard drives, negligent employee
behavior, and noncompliance with orga-
nizational or regulatory policies. Using a
Dell Flexible Computing Solution with vir-
tual desktops, IT sta can manage the
remote client data and context internally,
helping enhance security and ensure regu-
latory compliance. User productivity ben-
eits because when a device is lost, IT sta
can quickly provision replacement hard-
ware with the same inormation.

the Intel Xeon processor 5500 series in
11th-generation PowerEdge servers can
help boost user density on physical servers,
which can oten drive down the overall
cost o virtualized desktops. Technologies
such as the Teradici PC-over-IP protocol,
composite images, and client hypervisors,
meanwhile, can help organizations meet
the challenges o delivering client desktops
wherever and whenever users need it.

To keep workers productive and avoid
unnecessary support costs, the virtual
desktop inrastructure should deliver a
amiliar, seamless experience that meets
or exceeds the perormance users have
come to expect rom a physical PC.
Regardless o usage scenario or client
device, delivering a high-quality user
experiencewith responsive application
perormance, smooth video, and quick
downloadsis essential to the success o
a virtual desktop implementation.
A signiicant advance in this area is the
introduction o Teradici PC-over-IP technol-
ogy as a virtual remote desktop protocol
(see the The PC-over-IP dierence side-
bar in this article). PC-over-IP technology
contributes to a successul deployment by
oering a cost-eective, scalable approach
to client computing that resembles the tra-
ditional desktop computing model. For
example, when users move a mouse or type
an entry into a search bar, they can see the
results immediately. The protocol also sup-
ports rich unctionality like streaming video
and high-resolution graphics and works well
over both local area networks (LANs) and
wide area networks (WANs), using band-
width similar to what is consumed across a
normal cable modem.

Virtualization sotware partners are enhanc-
ing the Dell VRD approach by incorporating
composite image capability. To create a
composite image, Dell recommends sepa-
rating the base OS rom the applications,
user proile, and data by using application-
and proile-virtualization tools such as those
ound in VMware View and Citrix XenDesktop
virtualization sotware. Composite imag-
ing dynamically builds user images rom
individually managed OS, application, user
proile, and data components, allowing IT
sta to manage the components sepa-
rately while still providing employees with
a amiliar, individualized desktop environ-
ment. VMware View 4 with View Composer
enables building out the composite image
by virtualizing the OS away rom the applica-
tions and user settings; Citrix XenDesktop 4
desktop virtualization sotware with the
Citrix Provisioning Server or Desktops
stack provides composite image capabili-
ties as well.

Client hypervisors, announced by several
vendors (including VMware and Citrix) and
expected to be available in 2010, can urther
enhance the use and management o virtual
images. The client hypervisor is designed to
deploy virtual images onto physical hard-
ware and then run the PCs disconnected
rom the network. To run a virtual client
today, the device must be connected to
the network, and perormance depends
largely on the strength and speed o the
network connection. With a client hyper-
visor, users can check out a virtual imageonto a laptop, then disconnect and use the
hardware and image in the ield even
where no connectivity is available.
In this way, client hypervisors can help
organizations to maintain user productivity
and signiicantly increase IT eiciency. The
image remains present in the data center,
is managed as a single composite image,
and is built dynamically or individual users
during checkout. The build process applies

Scaling back IT costs can be critical or any organization, but the real secret lies in

the appropriate drivers and user settings
or each virtual client, but those settings
are unmanaged blocks that do not require
administrator time and eort. IT sta can
manage and run the same image on a
server, desktop, or laptop regardless o
hardware dierences.
Client hypervisor technology also
enables remote users to access local stor-
age as they would with a traditional PC, and
to roam reely even as they enjoy amiliar
desktop operating systems and environ-
ments. When users reconnect to the net-
work, their changes are copied to the server,
and the integrity o the data is preserved.

Many organizations are taking advan-

to virtual client desktops and begin gain-
ing the myriad beneits they can provide.1
