2. Employee means a person in the whole-time services of Air India Ltd.3. Permanent employee means an employee, who has completed a prescribed

probationary period and who has been confirmed thereafter as a regular member of the staff against the ‘permanent’ sanctioned establishment.

3 Medical Facilities

At Air India clinic / dispensaries:

Employees are entitled to free medical consultation at the Air India dispensaries during such consultation hours as may be notified from time to time.

i) Specialist consultation / Pathological / Radiological Examination :The laboratory/Pathology test, Audiometry, X-ray/ECGs and all such other investigations, when advised by the Company’s medical officers, are normally to be done in-house where the clinic has facilities to do so. A Medical Officer may, when he/she considers it necessary, refer an employee to a local panel hospital / recognized institution / panel specialist for advice/treatment or radiological / pathological tests. Charges for such consultation / examination will be borne by Air India.

4. Domiciliary Treatment :

Normally an employee when unwell is expected to attend the medical clinic he/she is registered with for the necessary medical assistance. However if an employee is not fit enough to attend and avail of the Company’s medical facilities, he/she can take the treatment for a limited period of not more than seven days from any qualified general practitioner of his/her choice and claim the expenses on such treatment subsequently. The reimbursement will be effected as per Air India’s Schedule of Charges. The cost of medicines will be reimbursed only against the prescriptions and cash memos/receipts.The cost of ‘basic investigations’ as may be required by the treating G.P. will be reimbursed against the reference note/s, copy/copies of the investigation report/reports and cash memos/receipts as per AI schedule of charges.Cost of ‘non-reimbursable’ investigations/items/treatment shall not be reimbursed. The rules for such reimbursement are strictly adhered to which are identified and notified from time to time by the Administrative Section of Medical Services Department. To be eligible for such reimbursement:

a) The information regarding such sickness and treatment must reach the clinic having the case card of the employee stating that he/she is taking treatment from the private doctor, within 72 hours.

Page 4: click.airindia.inclick.airindia.in/data/nmbs/RULES NMBS SCHEME April 2012... · Web viewLaser therapy for treatment of osteoarthritis. Quantum Magnetic Resonance, Lasik/Radial Keratotomy

b) The ailing staff must not be attending office duties during the period of treatment due to sickness or being on leave/off of any other type.

c) Consulting fees/charges and/or visit charges to GP/any Consultant are not reimbursable under the provisions of this scheme.

5. Hospitalization / Indoor Treatment :

a) Hospitalization in panel institutions :

When necessary, the treating Medical Officer of the Company may refer an employee for admission to a local institution like nursing home or hospital on the Company’s panel depending on the nature of ailment. Such referrals will again be on the basis of a note clearly stating the employee’s class of entitlement. The cost of hospitalization approved by the Company will be directly settled on receipt of bills from the institution.

We advise staff to invariably carry with them their Air India identity card while availing of the services from the Air India panel of specialists/institutions and ensure that the reference letter is signed by them.

b) Hospitalization in Non Panel Institutions :

While we advise all Air India employees to normally go through their respective medical clinics before getting admitted for the treatment of sickness requiring medical/surgical intervention, there are occasions when the staff may have to get admitted in a non panel institution in an emergency or rarely due to non-availability of beds in the panel institution.

The admitted staff on such occasions must inform the concerned medical clinic either in writing or by telephone and ensure that the notation to this effect is made on his/her case card within 72 hours of getting admitted.

The Company may shift the patient to the panel institution for better care or if so desired by the admitted staff, provided the employee is medically fit to be shifted as certified by the treating doctor.

The staff will have to settle the bill towards such hospitalization directly with the hospital/nursing home and subsequently claim the same with supporting documents including admission/discharge card in the format within 90 days from the date of discharge.

It is important again to note that the expenses incurred on such indoor treatment in non-panel institutions are limited to seven days only and the claims processed as per the laid down schedule of charges. In exceptional circumstances, if the staff is admitted in a non panel institution and cannot be shifted due to critical nature of

the medical condition, the Executive Director-Medical Services on the recommendation of the Company’s Medical Officer who has ascertained the gravity of such condition, may approve further stay exceeding 7 days for the purpose of reimbursement, if requested by the staff or by relatives on his/her behalf.

Executive Director-Medical Services, even without such request from staff/relative may also approve of the continuation/completion of treatment in non panel institution at her discretion especially if she is satisfied with the ongoing treatment and if shifting to panel institution is not going to be advantageous to the staff or Company.

6. Surgeon of patient’s choice in Non-panel Tier I/ Tier II Institution.:

In case an employee, who is advised by the Medical Officer of Air India to undergo surgical operation, desires to be operated by a surgeon of his choice, he/she will be at liberty to do so. The employee shall obtain prior approval of the Departmental Head at Headquarters and Regional Medical Head in the Regions. The Air India’s liability, however, towards the expenses incurred shall not exceed the amount as laid down in the scheduled Air India list of charges.

Similarly, if an employee is availing services of a non-panel surgeon in a tier I hospital, he/she will be reimbursed an amount equivalent to the negotiated charges in a panel hospital in the vicinity.

7. Medicines /Drugs / Injections :

Most of the Company’s medical clinics are equipped with a full fledged medical store and pharmacy to dispense medicines as may be prescribed by the Company’s officers. It is necessary in this context to also know that it is logically impossible to stock each and every brand of medicine available in the market as every medicine is generally marketed by several companies with their distinct brand names. An employee, will therefore, have to accept the available medicine in-house which may have a different brand name than the one prescribed by the medical officer. It will however, be the responsibility of the Pharmacy to ensure that the substitute brand is the exact ‘alternate’ containing the same medicine and that too, in the same quantity as prescribed. In other words, an employee shall not insist on the prescribing doctor’s or his/her choice/brand of medicine to be dispensed.

The prescribed medicine or its exact alternate when not readily available in-house will have to be procured by the employee through one of the panel chemists approved by the Company. The employee in such instances will be given a prescription duly signed by the Company’s medical officer and the same can be deposited by the employee with the panel chemist as mentioned above after signing the prescription for having received the medicines.

treatment abroad for common ailments not requiring immediate medical treatment like dental, skin etc., except during an emergency.

36. Medical facilities for India Based Officers (IBOS) Abroad :

All the foreign stations where Air India officers are posted can be roughly divided into two broad categories:

i. Countries having some statutory health scheme or social security scheme as required by the law of land e.g. USA, UK, Italy, Canada, France.

ii. Countries without any health schemes e.g. all other countries.

In countries having statutory scheme, the Company will contribute towards statutory or social security scheme to cover our employees. Thus in countries like Italy and France, the Company contributes to the social security scheme under which medical benefits are also extended. However, if the actual benefits are less than envisaged or are not adequate, the Company will also cover all India based officers under private insurance plus on an individual basis based on the merits of the case or under group insurance. An officer on being posted abroad is generally briefed by the concerned department.

In countries without any statutory health insurance scheme or any social welfare scheme, the Company has laid down monetary ceilings up to which the medical expenditure incurred will be reimbursed to the IBO. Normally 100% of the expenditure incurred by the staff (90% incurred on families) is reimbursed subject to the laid down ceiling. Alternatively, the India based officer can also opt for any private medical insurance coverage for himself/herself (as well as his/her family) and the premium towards it will be reimbursed subject to the laid down ceiling for the station/country.

Note :

I. The India based officers on being posted abroad are thoroughly briefed about the insurance schemes and other relevant details like premium, benefits etc. at the place of his/her posting as the premium and the benefits vary not only from country to country but also within the same country from one insurance company to another. When in doubt, the IBO being posted abroad may also get in touch with the Medical Services Department or better still, have a first hand information from the IBOs being re-posted back to India/replaced by him/her.

II. The cost of treatment /medicine received by the IBO through the Air India Medical Clinics during his/her visit to India, will be debited to their entitlement at the station of his/her posting.
