The festival for families and young adults, part of The Times and The Sunday Times Cheltenham Literature Festival.

Book It! offers children a fantastic opportunity to see and hear from the people who create their favourite books. I was excited to be asked to be the Guest Director at the Festival because I am passionate about helping people who are committed to live book events for children. I think we have a fantastic menu for you this year – and anyone who wants to help children think, imagine and discover things will, I hope, bring them to Cheltenham.

We are delighted to welcome Guest Director Michael Rosen, poet, broadcaster and storyteller extraordinaire to the Festival. Watch out too for the brilliant Chris Judge who designed our wonderful cover illustration. This year we feature no fewer than six former and current Children’s Laureates, including Malorie Blackman and former US Laureate, Jon Scieszka.

We hope you will love our fabulous programme of events – from favourite characters to laugh aloud humour, amazing nonfiction to fun crafty sessions, edgy teen panels and our brilliant programme of creative writing and illustrating workshops, Write On.

The Phoenix comic comes to Cheltenham! The Phoenix Presents… A Comic Day Out! Join the gang behind weekly story comic The Phoenix for FREE drop-in activities on Saturday 4 October. From a mega comic-jam session, to one-to-one comic-creation guidance, it’s a whole day of creative, comic book fun.

Look out for your favourite characters! Horrid Henry, Spot, The Gruffalo and many others will be popping up on Imperial Square and in the Waterstones Children’s Hideaway throughout the Festival. Put yourself in the picture with Where’s Wally!

The Discovery Trail Follow the trail and answer questions about some of the best loved characters in young fiction. Pick up your entry form at the Dean Close marquee.

VISITING THE FESTIVAL WITH CHILDRENThe Book It! programme is tailored especially for the whole family, with all of our events carefully selected for each age range. These ages are carefully chosen in consultation with publishers and performers, taking into account the event length, format and content. If an event has a + sign after the age though, this means that the event is suitable for everyone above the given age, so don’t be afraid to bring older children, their siblings, aunts, uncles, or even grannies and granddads!

CHILDREN UNDER 12 ADVICE FOR PARENTSChildren under 12 years must be accompanied by a responsible person aged 16 or over, approved by the parent/guardian, and prices are kept as low as possible to allow for this. A responsible person aged 16 or over approved by the parent/guardian can accompany up to six children to an event. Cheltenham Festivals maintains a Child Protection Policy, but cannot act in loco parentis or take responsibility for unsupervised children. If your child is disruptive you may be asked to leave an event.

WRITE ON! WORKSHOPSOur popular series of workshops is specifically designed for children. The capacity of these workshops is kept low to enable the children to be able to engage in more depth with a specific subject or to have more dedicated time for a make-and-do project.

You are only required to purchase a ticket for each child attending, not for any accompanying adults. If you do not intend to remain at the workshop with your child then we ask parents/guardians to drop children off at the venue, sign them in and leave a mobile contact number in case of emergencies.

Please ensure that you are able to collect your child from the workshop venue at the specified end time.
