Cleve Area School Is a ‘ Great Place to learn’. I want every child enrolled in Cleve AS to gain as good an education as anywhere in the state. As a staff team we are all working towards this goal. Our SACE results last year were very good. I congratulate all of the 2018 Year 12 students and wish them all the best for the future. All students who applied for tertiary studies at Universities gained places in their area of interest. I also acknowledge and congratulate all the students who gained traineeships and employment. This means that you can complete all your studies at Cleve AS and gain entry into your choice of tertiary studies, traineeships and/or employment because we have multiple pathways for students at Cleve AS. Cleve Music We will continue to offer private tuition via Bronwyn Smith and John Murray. Lessons will commence next week. Please contact the school if you are interested in your child or yourself in learning to play a musical instrument.

Cleve AS Improvement Plan Last term we commenced a new school improvement model that was introduced by the Department for Education. At our Pupil free day in December we looked at our student achievement data and perception data from parent/student/staff feedback. As a result we have now documented the following: Our Vision: A safe, caring, positive learning environment fostering creativity, entrepreneurial spirit and ensuring that the best learning

outcomes are achieved by each student. Our Motto: Cleve – A GREAT PLACE TO LEARN Our Mission: To deliver high quality education to students from Reception to year 12. Our Values: Care, Respect, Enthusiasm for learning and Working together in a strong team As I enter my 9th year as Principal I want to thank students, staff and parents for your ongoing support and I look forward to working with you throughout 2019. Deputy news

Welcome to 2019 A warm welcome back to school for all old and new students, it’s great to see so many new faces settle into school routines so quickly. Well done to staff and students for their efforts to welcome new students and ensure a smooth transition to Cleve AS. It was terrific to see their excitement on entering their new classrooms and I thank our primary team for their outstanding efforts over the holidays to set up engaging and attractive learning environments for their students.

2019 Buddies

On Tuesday, at our annual ‘first day assembly’ we acknowledged important moments in our students’ educations. Yesterday, our Year 12’s began their final year of school while our brand new receptions began their schooling journey. To mark this occasion our awesome Year 12’s presented the excited reception students with their reception diaries, which included a special welcome certificate inside the front cover. The diaries were received with some creative handshakes and the bonding between the Year 12 and Reception buddies has begun. Throughout the year we will have some small events to bring these buddies together during their special school year. Our primary team this year is: Classroom Teachers R/1 - Mikaela Irwin R/1 - Sarah Agnew 1/2 - Kirsty Elson and Jessica Quinn 2/3 - Fiona Millard and Samantha Wardle 3/4 - Renee Roach 4/5 - Anna Williamson 6/7 - Emily Wight and Georgina Stutley 6/7 - Elle Kenny

UPCOMING EVENTS

Week 3 – OPEN DAY On Tuesday, 12th February From 2-3:10pm Classrooms will be open to visitors. We invite parents and family members to visit our classrooms to meet class teachers and have a look around the classrooms and school. Staff are currently planning some information sessions for interested parents during the afternoon eg. Walker Learning approach, Accelerated Reader program, Dojo messaging app etc. More information will be sent home via a special letter as details are finalised.

Week 4 – YEAR 4-12 STUDENTS SWIMMING CARNIVAL On Friday 22nd February From 9-3:10 Mr Graeme Byrnes coordinates this event and more information will be promoted through the newsletter over the next few weeks.

Week 5 – PORT POWER VISIT On Tuesday, 19th February Time to be advised Port Power Football representatives are visiting to present an informative session about healthy lifestyles and sportsmanship. There are usually autograph opportunities so students may like to wear or bring some Port Power merchandise.

Week 5 – DASH N SPLASH On Friday, 1st March From 11:30am to 1:00pm The R-3 team coordinate a water based event known as Dash n Splash for the junior school eg. R-3 students. This year it is scheduled for Friday 1st March. We begin at 11:30am and finish by lunch time. Students rotate through 5 water based activities; one of these is novelty events and races in the swimming pool. The races in the swimming pool cater for all ability levels eg. running races in the shallow end. The other events are water based games on the grass and recreation games in the shallow end of the pool. STAY HEALTHY AND PREVENT THE SPREAD OF DISEASE

We are looking forward to a successful 2019, both academically and physically. Last year some of our wonderful staff and a reception student bravely fought cancer. Unfortunately, the treatment that they received has impacted on their immune system. Please see the letter attached from the Women’s and Children’s Hospital for more information. We are asking families to be more vigilant than usual with rashes, fevers and declarations of illness. If your child complains of, or shows signs of contagious illnesses, we’d appreciate you having them checked/cleared by a medical practitioner before returning to school. If unsure, please ring the school for assistance. It is imperative that we do not bring contagious diseases into our school, as this will have serious consequences for our brave cancer fighters. ACCELERATED READER PROGRAM

Mrs Joanne Turner is the new coordinator of the Accelerated Reader Program and she has some exciting plans to encourage student reading. We thank Mrs Philippa Grainger for her tireless work with this program over the past few years and thank Mrs Turner for taking on this role and look forward to celebrating students reading achievements through the year. Natasha Agars Deputy Principal

Sports Committee Meeting

The school Sports Committee will hold its first meeting for the year next Monday 4h February at 3:30pm in the meeting room. The main items for discussion at this meeting will be the up and coming Year 4-12 Swimming Carnival and Sports Days. If interested, all parents and community members are most welcome to attend.

Year 11 & 12 students started the school year off with goal setting, getting to know each other and community connections with local employers and former students from a variety of industries.

The day wound up with a science and engineering team challenge. The school was overwhelmed by community support for the event and would like to thank, once again, the many volunteers, staff and, of course, students who

pitched in to make the day a success.

MAMMA MIA! Here I go again. Due to popular demand after the ELVIS show earlier this year,

an “ABBA” night is planned for

Saturday 23rd February 2019

in the Cowell Institute.

‘What would life be like without song and dance’

with music heady and rousing from

“Cowell Local Vocals” and the popular group from Whyalla

“George & the Chairman” who performed Elvis as a Duo at the

Elvis night and now includes two females performing music

and songs from the popular “ABBA” era .

There will be Quiz’s, Raffles and Mini-auction

as well as Best Dressed in the Eea of “ABBA”.

So be a ‘Super Trouper’ and support our district

and remember ‘The Winner Takes It All’.

Organise a table of patrons as this promises to be a

very popular event. BYO drinks and nibbles.

Proceeds to the Cowell Community and due to the uncertainty

of the season, the cost of tickets are only $20.
