Clermont’s Hoods Lagoon set for a new look

Clermont’s historic Hoods Lagoon will soon take on its new look, with a five month program of works starting this week.

Isaac Regional Council’s Hoods Lagoon Rejuvenation Project will develop the Lagoon’s bankside and community areas, improve its water quality and install more historical attractions.

Local Isaac Regional Councillor Barbara Stranks said the works would give us more open and useable areas to enjoy.

“The Lagoon is an important part of community life and it’s time we delivered long lasting improvements to the area,” she said.

“This week, upgrades start to the Anzac Memorial grounds.

“The community will have more level ground and space to commemorate Anzac Day and we’re adding seven new memorial pillars for the Anzac Centenary,” she said. The schedule of works specific for Hoods Lagoon aim to level bankside areas; control erosion with retaining walls; install three water aerators including a centre fountain; and could include changes to the boardwalks. “We aim to have the two aerators and a centre fountain installed and illuminated in time for the Mackay-Isaac Tourism Awards in May,” said Cr Stranks.

“We’ll also install a new plaque and plant a tree to landmark the 1916 original bridge footing and we’ll be talking with the community about their future vision for Centenary Park,” she said.

The Hoods Lagoon Rejuvenation Project is occurring over two stages up until June 2015.

The community and visitors are advised there will be closures and light outages at various sites around the Lagoon to allow for project works.

Your next family member may be waiting for you at the Moranbah pound, with five friendly dogs currently up for adoption in Isaac Regional Council’s Paws from the Pound program.

Launched in November 2014, the re-homing program has successfully given seven dogs new families and Council is hoping for Honey, Dozer, Jacko, Isaac and Kelsie to find theirs.

Residents can view the Paws from the Pound dog profiles by visiting www.isaac.qld.gov.au/paws-from-the-pound

Dogs for re-homing pass Council’s ‘friendly’ dog test which includes an assessment on temperament, basic training and whether they’ll adjust well to a new home.

If you would like to meet Paws from the Pound’s Honey, Dozer, Jacko, Isaac or Kelsie, please contact Council’s Local Laws team on 1300 472 227 today.

learning difficulties as she has overcome dyslexia herself.

Ms French is the national Children’s Laureate, which involves travelling around Australia to promote literacy, creativity and story-telling to children, and advocating for children with learning difficulties.

Ms French is also an avid wombat lover! Last year she released a picture book about the Northern Hairy-nosed wombat, an endangered species found near Clermont.

The book, ‘The Hairy-Nosed Wombats Find a New Home’ tells the story of the colony of Northern-Hairy nosed wombats needing to find another home.

The Clermont Library has a copy of ‘The Hairy-Nosed Wombats Find a New Home’ just waiting to be borrowed.

Other picture books written by Jackie French that the Library has include: Josephine Wants to Dance; Baby Wombat’s Week; Christmas Wombat; The Tomorrow Book and Christmas Wombat and her latest junior fiction book, The Book of Horses and Unicorns.

Health Matters: Protect, Prevent; Live WellNew No-Smoking laws for Queensland HealthFrom 1 January 2015, smoking is banned at all Queensland public and private hospitals and health facilities, and for 5 metres beyond their boundaries.

These no-smoking laws apply at all times, and to all staff and patient residential areas on healthcare facility land, and include the use of all smoking products, including regular cigarettes and devices commonly known as electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes).

This is one of many legislated reforms which provide Australians with the opportunity to choose whether they are exposed to cigarette smoke or not – an important health prevention strategy in our country. Similar restrictions apply to outdoor or enclosed public areas, eating and drinking venues, non-residential building entrances, children’s outdoor playground equipment, patrolled beach or outdoor swimming areas, major sports facilities, smoking in a business vehicle if someone else is in the vehicle and smoking within a vehicle if a person under the age of 16 is in the vehicle. Fines and penalties are enforceable and can be issued to either the smoker or the licensee/occupier.

Smoking is the leading preventable cause of death and disease in Australia. In 2003, it was estimated that tobacco use was responsible for more than 15,500 deaths.

Exposure to second-hand smoke also causes premature death and disease in children and adults who do not smoke. There is no risk-free level of exposure to second-hand smoke.

Quitting at any age has health benefits, with the largest reduction in health risks in those who quit the earliest. Many Australians remain unaware of the extent of the impact smoking has on the body.

When you quit smoking you will see immediate benefits to your health, your looks, your sense of taste and smell, your fitness and your finances. You will feel better about yourself and improve the health of family and friends around you.

Quitting is a chance to be who you want to be and allows you to feel more comfortable in social situations. With most public and work places now smoke free, being a smoker can increase barriers to socialising.

Research has shown that 3 to 6 months after quitting, ex-smokers have less stress and anxiety than before they quit. Smokers have more stress because they are constantly dealing with the anxiety that cravings cause. And, as further incentive, Quit smoking and you will have extra money. With prices averaging around $20 for a packet of cigarettes, you could save around $7,300 every year – that’s an overseas holiday, money towards a car, house or a shopping spree. Based on spending $20 per day on cigarettes, you can see the savings add up quickly.Quitline (13 78 48) is a confidential, free service for peo-ple who want to quit smoking. The service will provide you with information, advice and assistance tailored to your particular needs. Counsellors are available 7am–10pm, 7 days a week.

And remember…. Protect, Prevent, Live Well

Vale: Colleen McCullough 1938 - 2015

Australia lost a literacy treasure with the death of internationally acclaimed Australian author, Colleen McCullough on Friday, 30 January 2015.

Ms McCullough passed away in the Norfolk Island Hospital, aged 77 years. She had lived on Norfolk Island since 1984.

Ms McCullough originally pursued a career in medicine but an allergy to surgical soap put an end to her career as a doctor. She became a neuroscientist at Sydney’s Royal North Shore Hospital, then a researcher at Yale Medical School. It was at Yale that Ms McCullough began writing and her first novel, Tim, was published in 1974.

Ms McCullough was well-known for her book ‘The Thornbirds’ which sold 30 million copies worldwide and was later made into a television mini-series.

The Clermont Library has several books written by Colleen McCullough, including The Touch, Too Many Murders, Morgan’s Run, Angel Puss and Caesar.

Until next time, see you at the Library.

Class DescriptionGut and Butt blastis a target class that focuses on strengthening and toning the nine core divisions of the abdominal plane. While simultaneously blasting the three muscles of the buttocks, hamstrings and quadriceps. This will increase fat metabolism at rest and help slim and tone those problematic areas. Although not targeted, general whole body conditioning applies and while challenging, is more than suitable for any fitness level.

Workout Of the Day (WOD)This is a board based program, working along the principles of H.I.I.T where you are able to come in and complete the workout in your own time.

What is H.I.I.T?High-intensity interval training is a training technique, which commands full effort through quick, intense bursts of exercise followed by active recovery periods. This form of exercise uses power and cardio, keeping the heart rate high and metabolizing fat at the same time.

Open GymThis is your opportunity to use the Gym facilities, there will be a basic weights program and WOD on offer for your utilisation, or you could just be creative and do your own training.

Lets LiftThis program has been designed to target the eight large muscle groups in a 45 minute whole body workout. This is achieved through the use of barbell and Dumbbell weights. This class is suitable for every fitness level.

Mad GRITThis is a 30min program incorporating core, strength and cardio based exercise, ideal for total fitness development.
