A note from our pastor… Every year we priests anxiously await the announcement of assignment changes, wondering if we will be on the list and have to begin the process of packing up our belongings and saying good bye to the people with whom we have shared their joys and sorrows. There is relief once the assignments are made and announced. This past week Bishop Vann has called Fr. Ven Amidar to serve as a parochial vicar at Holy Family Church in Seal Beach. I know that Fr. Ven will do well in his new assignment, just as he has faithfully served us here at St. Justin Mar-tyr Church since 2013. I hope that his new assignment will be fruitful and blessed.

Fr. Ven has blessed us here at St. Justin Martyr Church by his enthusiasm, intelligence and kindness. I will miss his keen insights he shared each Monday morning as we ex-plored the reading for the coming Sunday. I will miss his hardy laugh. I will miss his wisdom. I want to thank Fr. Ven for all that he has added to our parish. During his time here, he continued to develop our Advent celebration of Simbang Gabi. He helped institute the “Salubong,” the Easter morning meeting of the resurrected Jesus with his Blessed Mother. He has also been instrumental in forming the Filipino Cur-sillo in the Diocese of Orange. I think his most im-portant project was the rebuilding of a parish church in his home diocese after the 2013 Typhoon Haiyan. As Fr. Ven moves on to his new assignment, I hope you will join with me in praying for him daily.

JOHN THE BAPTIST Since June 24 falls on a Sunday this year, the Church has

the opportunity for a more intense celebration of the birth of John the Baptist, who is often described as the last of the Old Testament prophets and the bridge between Judaism and Chris-tianity. More commonly, John is known as the "precursor" of our Lord Jesus Christ. All the Gospels report John's basic mes-sage: Repent, the kingdom is near at hand. One greater than I is coming.

Though he was a wandering preacher who dressed in cam-el skins and ate grasshoppers, John's legacy is one of true roy-alty. His origins are similar to those foretold by God through the prophet Isaiah: "You are my servant, he said to me, Israel through whom I show my glory" (Isaiah 49:3). Week 1: July 19 You have the right to talk about your grief. Talking about your grief will help you heal. Seek out others who will allow you to talk as much as you want, as often as you want, about your grief. If at times you don’t feel like talking you also have the right to be silent. Week 2: July 26 You have the right to make use of ritual. The funeral ritual does more than acknowledge the death of someone loved. It helps provide you with the support of caring people. More im-portantly, the funeral is a way for you to mourn. If others tell you the funeral or other healing rituals such as these are silly or unneces-sary, don’t listen. Home work: bring an object that belonged to the deceased. Week 3: August 2 You have the right to embrace your spirituality. If faith is a part of your life, express it in ways that seem appropriate to you. Allow yourself to be around people who understand and support your religious beliefs. Homework: Write a letter to your loved one. Week 4: August 9 You have the right to search for meaning. You may find yourself asking, “Why did he or she die? Why this way? Why now?” Some of your questions may have answers, but some may not. Week 5: August 16 You have the right to treasure your memories. Memories are one of the best legacies that exist after the death of someone loved. You will al-ways remember. Instead of ignoring your memo-ries, find others with whom you can share them.

Universal Church collection June 23-24

This collection combines the Catholic Relief Services Collection and the Peter’s Pence Collection. Envelopes are in the pews.

The mission of Catholic Relief Services is to assist the poor and disadvantaged by alleviating human suffering, promoting development of all people, and fostering charity and justice internationally. CRS aids the poor by first providing direct assis-tance where needed, and then en-couraging these people to help with their own development.

Peter’s Pence Collection gives us an opportunity to be a witness of charity to our brothers and sisters around the world. It promotes and supports the works of our Holy Fa-ther, enabling him to respond with emergency financial assistance to victims of war, natural disasters, and others most in need of assistance.

St. Vincent de Paul schedule change

Effective immediately, the food/grocery distribution will be on the first and sec-ond Wednesdays of each month, from 6-7 p.m. Food will also be distributed on the fourth Saturday of each month from 8-10 a.m. Food distribution is held under the shelter next to our SVDP room.

Because of the July 4th holiday, next week’s food will be distributed instead on Tuesday, July 3.

Having been out to the cemetery a few times and found him in the same place (no bicycle) the family of Gene Shook would like to express their thanks to all the St. Justin Martyr friends and family for the many letters,, cards, meals, flowers, Masses, Perpetual spiritual enrollments and phone messages we received following the death of our beloved husband and father. It was a comfort to know he had touched so many lives in his way. Your support and friendship has helped us cope these last few months and is so appreciated by all of the family.

This year our theme is “Redeemed Through Love.” This retreat is for all young adults ages 18-39. Come and enjoy meals together, music, prayer, play, and grow deeper in rela-tionship with God. We will discuss topics relating to living a Catholic life in today's culture in-cluding relationships, reconciliation, God's love, and community. The retreat will at St. An-drew's Abbey, a Benedictine monastery in Valyermo, CA. It will begin on Friday, July 13th at 7:00pm and conclude on Sunday, July 15th at 4:00pm. Entre voces de júbilo, Dios asciende a su trono, Aleluya Jesús estará siempre con nosotros. La ascensión de Jesús pone fin a la historia humana del Hijo de Dios e inicia el

tiempo de espera de su segunda venida. Jesús, en los años de su vida pública, había acostumbrado a sus Apóstoles a su presen-cia palpable, pero después de la resurrección cambia su modo de estar con ellos. Con su Ascensión al cielo, pone a la Iglesia primitiva en una situación difícil, se sienten solos. A los Once había asegurado que se quedaría con ellos para siempre: “Yo estoy con ustedes todos los días, hasta el fin del mundo” (Mateo 28, 20). Pero, a pesar de todo, su Ascensión desequilibra al grupo, y agudiza el deseo del pronto retorno. En este tiempo de espera será necesario acostumbrar el corazón a tener una di-versa experiencia, ya no enlazada al cuerpo ausente de Cristo, sino a su “voz” que continua escuchándose en la profundidad del espíritu. La Ascensión se refiere a Jesús, encarnado, muerto y resucitado, pero mira también a la Iglesia que continúa la misión de su fundador, gracias al Espíritu Santo.

Vayan por todo el mundo y prediquen el Evangelio a toda criatura. La misión de la Iglesia se desarrolla en la fase de la espera del retorno del Señor. Por esto, Jesús no quiere discípulos alienados solo mirando al cielo, sino que les pide bajar la mirada a la tierra debido a que han sido llamados para dar testimonio de Aquel que vive en sus corazones en la vida diaria. El conjunto de las lecturas invita a ir más allá del acontecimiento de la Ascensión, que se describe en términos espacio-temporales: “elevación” al cielo del Señor resucitado, los “cuarenta días” después de la Pascua, son solo una manera de indic-ar el final de una etapa de la historia de salvación y el inicio de otra. Aquel Jesús con el cual los Apóstoles han “comido y bebido” continua su permanencia invisible en la Iglesia; principalmente de forma sacramental; de esta presencia del Señor nace la responsabilidad y la misión de la evangelización. Todo esto se realiza y, por decirlo de otra manera, se hace “rito” en la celebración eucarística.

REFLEXIONES SOBRE LA PALABRA, Llamados a ser siervos de Dios

Isaías 49:1–6 Encontramos aquí un segundo canto del siervo del Señor. El siervo se de-scribe a sí mismo y su misión, que es rescatar a Israel; pero el Señor considera que es poco y le confía la tarea de ser luz de las naciones. Aquí la misión se hace universal. En la segunda estrofa se describe la confianza que el Señor tiene en su Siervo en el momento de la difi-cultad. No se sabe con certeza a quién se estaba refiriendo el profeta, si a una persona indi-vidual o a un colectivo. Algunos comentaristas aseguran que, por la expresión, “me llamó desde el vientre materno” las palabras se refieren a una persona específica. La imagen de un profeta llamado desde el seno materno puede relacionarse con el relato de la vocación del profeta Jeremías. El hecho de haber sido llamado desde el seno materno sugiere que el siervo debía cumplir una misión como el libertador de Israel. Hechos 13:22–26 Este pasaje ratifica la misión de Juan el Bautista como el precursor de Cristo. Juan sabe muy bien cuál es su misión y no pretende ser el mensaje, sino el mensajero. Lucas 1:57–66, 80 Con el nacimiento de Juan, Lucas quiere demostrar el cumplimiento de las palabras del ángel a Zacarías: Isabel, que era estéril, dará a luz un hijo que se llamará Juan. En la Biblia, la omnipotencia de Dios se revela de una manera especial en su miseri-cordia. Como el Siervo de Dios, Juan será lleno del Espíritu Santo desde el seno de su ma-dre.

Nuestra cultura: Si bien en el pasado los padres les ponían los nombres a sus hijos según la fecha del calendario, al presente hay muchos nombres tomados de otras fuentes y algunos inventados por los padres. El sentido de poner a los hijos bajo la protección de un santo en particular parece que se está perdiendo.

REFLEXIONES PARA LA HOMILÍA Es difícil pensar que desde el vientre materno alguien tenga una vocación definida.

Para muchos de nosotros, es difícil encontrar el camino incluso después de mucha consul-ta y discernimiento. La vocación de Juan, además, parece extraña: dejarlo todo por ir al desierto, predicar y ser tomado por loco o extravagante y reconocer que no se es el más importante. Es una vocación muy dura. El núcleo de la llamada de Juan, sin embargo, es mucho más sencillo y es el que recibimos todos. Desde el seno de nuestra madre, estamos llamados a ser siervos del Señor. Esa llamada se confirma en nuestro Bautismo. ¿Qué hacen estos siervos del Señor? Según Isaías, son quienes llevan la luz de Dios al mundo. Aunque esto es un fuerte compromiso, no es tan complicado. Requiere de nosotros, sin embargo, vivir en integridad: sencillamente en nuestros deberes familiares y sociales, atendiendo a las necesidades de todos según nuestra responsabilidad. Requiere que sea-mos buenos vecinos, cordiales y serviciales con los demás. Requiere que cumplamos con las normas de nuestro barrio y las normas de circulación, para hacer la convivencia más segura, limpia y agradable. Requiere que en nuestro trabajo, seamos honrados y cumpli-dores, sin tardanzas, excusas, ni flojeras. Requiere que, siempre que nos sea posible, cumplamos con los deberes de la ciudadanía votando y participando en asuntos de vivien-da, educación, trabajo e inmigración. Requiere que cuando nos comprometamos con algo lo cumplamos, porque está en juego la imagen de Cristo que portamos. Requiere que vivamos en paz con todos y que cuidemos de nuestro medio ambiente.

Son cosas sencillas de la vida diaria, que a veces se nos escapan pensando en algo grande a lo que nos podemos sentir llamados; pero esta es la llamada que tenemos, desde el vientre de nuestra madre: ser testigos de la luz y la verdad, como Juan el Bautista. No hará falta que nos vayamos a un desierto, porque nuestras ciudades son suficientemente áridas y duras. No hará falta que comamos nada especial, porque la llamada es a hacer tiempo para sentarse con la familia a comer en paz, conversar y escucharnos unos a otros. Cuando vivamos así, en sencillez, verdad y justicia estaremos siendo luz de las naciones, y estaremos, como Juan, anunciando la venida del Salvador a nuestro mundo. Para la reflexión: ¿De qué maneras me siento llamado a servir a Dios? ¿Cómo puedo hoy, desde mi vida, ser testigo de Cristo? ¿La gente que está junto a mí podría conocer a Jesús solamente viendo cómo vivo?
