11th Sunday in Ordinary Time

They that are planted in the house of the Lord

shall flourish in the courts of our God. - Psalm 92:14

God’s Time We either pay a en on to or ignore “clock me” as we play in the summer sun and note the earth’s lt and the lengthening days. We live by me. We reckon me in seconds and minutes and hours, or we use broader chunks like supper me and summer me. God keeps another sort of me. God speaks to us of “saving me,” that is, the me of salva on. This sense of me is called kairos, and this me is always now, always present and available, always revealing, o en surprising. This Sunday’s readings alert us to the reality and the import of God’s

me. Ezekiel and the Gospel of Mark remind us that our labor and our plo ng and our planning rest in God. For God takes our smallest efforts and makes of them great works. Paul points us to the “harvest” me, urges us to be watchful for its coming, and calls us to recognize that we must spend our me pleasing God. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Feast of Faith: The Preparation of the Altar The altar is the focal point of our churches. It is a sign of Christ in our midst; indeed, it has been said that “the altar is Christ” (Dedica on of an Altar, 4). The altar is a table “on which the sacrifice of the cross is perpetuated in mystery throughout the ages un l Christ comes”; but it is also the place for a fes ve meal: “a table at which the Church’s children assemble to give thanks to God and receive the body and blood of Christ” (Dedica on of an Altar, 4). Both these func ons of the altar are clear in the rites for the prepara on of the altar that follow the general intercessions, which remind us of the prepara ons we make at home for a fes ve meal. The deacon or altar servers come forward and, bowing, place a cloth known as a corporal (from the La n for “body”) over the altar cloth. They place the chalice, the cup to be used in the celebra on of the Eucharist, and the Sacramentary or Roman Missal, which contains the prayers of the Mass, on the altar. These reverent prepara ons help us to focus on what is about to happen: the sharing of a holy meal, a solemn sacrifice. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The Big Picture We hear about the Kingdom of God in many of Jesus’ parables. In today’s passage, He uses parables to describe how the Kingdom will spread. What is interes ng is that they are not so much about our ac ons as they are about how God builds His Kingdom. Let’s start with the second parable: Jesus exaggerates a li le, with the mustard seed being the smallest seed and the bush being the largest plant. Like the birds on the branches, Jesus implies that the growing Kingdom will a ract outsiders to be members. His point is that the Kingdom may look small at first, but it will keep growing. We need not be discouraged when it seems the Kingdom is not growing: We might be limi ng it to people who think and act just like ourselves. We might see a endance at church in our parish declining. So Jesus is reminding us to think of the bigger picture. In the first parable about the man who sca ered seeds, Jesus says that those seeds produce a harvest, even though the farmer doesn’t know how or why those seeds can grow. We too can be doing things that help the Kingdom to grow, without knowing how we are helping. But God is making the Kingdom grow in His own way and in His own

me. Like the farmer, we can help it grow by loving each other, teaching our children about Jesus, caring for the poor and the sick. But we can also hinder the Kingdom by being s ngy with our love, or hur ng people with our anger. So let us ask God to trust him as we do our part to help the Kingdom to grow. Respect Life Ministry Spiritual Adop on Week 40: Much of the vernix has vanished on your baby’s body.15% of your child’s body is fat now. Since he hasn’t learned to shiver yet, these fat stores will help regulate his temperature. Your baby’s chest s cks out and his lungs will con nue developing un l birth. They are manufacturing large quan es of surfactant which works to keep the air sacs open. By now small breast buds are present on both sexes. The baby now weighs 7.6 pounds and is 20.2 inches long. Congratula ons! Any day now your baby will be born and celebrate his first birthday!

Reflec on: Jesus, the Bible and the Church teach that stealing is wrong. Does it follow that laws that prohibit stealing impose a religious belief on the rest of us? Of course not. But some argue that a law protec ng the unborn would impose religion. They think freedom of religion should allow child-killing. Prayer: Lord, You have blessed human conscience with the ability to perceive that killing children is wrong. Increase the moral strength of Your people, that this evil may end.

Spiritual Bouquet to St Joseph, Patron of Fathers: Father’s Day provides a beau ful opportunity to pray for and honor fathers. However, it can also be a difficult holiday for some, such as those who have lost their own father, those who have lost a child, and those who are struggling to have a child. A Spiritual Bouquet seeks to li up the many inten ons brought to our hearts by the observance of Father’s Day, entrus ng them to the intercession of St. Joseph, Patron of Fathers. It also provides a way to honor St. Joseph for his own example of embracing the call to fatherhood amid difficult circumstances. Despite all obstacles, he was faithful, welcoming the life of the Christ Child and offering care and protec on to both Mary and Jesus. During the month of June, and especially on Father’s Day, parishioners are invited to write a prayer inten on on a slip of paper and place it in the basket placed in front of the statue of St. Joseph. Traveling Chalice

We have a wonderful opportunity for you to help in suppor ng our priests and religious while crea ng fer le ground for new voca ons. We are asking for volunteers to receive the Traveling Chalice at mass and bring it into your home for one week. A book of beau ful prayers is provided with the Chalice that you keep to con nue praying for voca ons a er returning the chalice. Contact Mary Johnston at [email protected] to sign up.
