Infant of Prague
I would like to briefly share with you my recent experience of going on a spiritual pilgrimage to visit the Infant Jesus of Prague shrine in the Czech Republic. Most of us probably remember having at home (or at least seeing one somewhere) an Infant of Prague statue. The story behind it is very important and reminds us of God calling all of us to be humble in His sight. The statue itself originated in Spain as a family heirloom belonging to Maria Manriquez de Lara who brought the statue with her to Czechoslovakia when she married the Czech nobleman, Vratislav of Pernstyn. Eventually in 1628 the statue was brought for public devotion to a church in Prague cared for by the Discalced Carmelites. Fr. Cyril was the first person to promote the devotion to the Infant in gratitude for having been granted an assurance of his religious and priestly vocation. During the Thirty Years War, the church was seriously damaged and so was the statue (which was lost for awhile and eventually found by Fr. Cyril.) Unfortunately, the hands were broken. One day while mediating before the statue, he heard a voice, “Have pity on Me and I will have pity on you. Give Me My hands and I will give you peace. The more you honor Me, the more I will bless you!” At that very moment, Fr. Cyril noticed the broken hands and attempted to have it repaired but no funds were available. Through the generosity of a mysterious woman (who appeared with the money and after having given it to Fr. Cyril suddenly disappeared) and a gentleman, the cost was eventually taken care of and the statue was repaired. Today one can view the statue of the Infant Jesus of Prague in a side altar at the Church of Our Lady Victorious. Standing eighteen inches high, it is beautifully adorned with clothing. The color of the vestments is reflective of the liturgical seasons. Since we were still in the Christmas season when I was there, white was the color of the Infant’s vestments. People come from all over the world to pray to the little Infant who loves every person who comes to Him. The left hand encircles a miniature globe, surmounted by a cross, representing the Kingship of the Christ Child. The right hand is extended in blessing in a form reserved for the Pope (the first two fingers are upraised to symbolize the two natures in Jesus, while the folded thumb and last two fingers touch each other, representing the unity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit in the mystery of the Holy Trinity.) The Infant is wearing a crown reminding us of Christ our King. The tabernacle is placed below the statue. I had the privilege of celebrating Mass at the main altar of the church. All of the petitions given me were placed on the altar during the Mass and prayed for. I also thank you for your prayers for me during this time of pilgrimage. If there is only one lesson to be learned from the Infant Jesus of Prague it is that Jesus humbled Himself to become one of us because of His great love for all of humanity. We are children of God and so come before Him in humility recognizing our sinfulness and weaknesses. We also recognize that has called us to greatness and because of His mercy and forgiveness we are able to rise up and come out of the darkness into the light and love of Jesus Himself! Father David Information on the Infant Jesus of Prague supplied by Rev. Ludvik Nemec in his book, “The Infant Jesus of Prague.” (Catholic Book Publishing Company, 1986)

Parish Library Open House: February 8-9
A few years ago with just a few books, the St. James the Apostle Parish Library was established. Today we have almost 1,000 books and CD’s available to you for your spiritual enrichment. The library is located in the coatroom with a sign out book. We work on the “honor system” and no late fees are charged! During the weekend of February 8-9, which is also Hospitality Weekend, members of our library committee will be present to answer any questions you may have regarding the library and materials. Please stop by and see what we have!
We Welcome with Joy & Support These children received the Sacrament of Baptism. We pray that they may continue to grow in the awareness that they are beloved children of God.

All parishioners who are interested in being a part of this worthwhile endeavor are invited to a planning meeting on Monday, February 3rd at 7:00 P.M. in St. James Hall. Please enter through Door 10. For more information, please contact Lisa Gilligan: [email protected]

[ STEWARDSHIP NOTE FOR TODAY ]
The watchword today is “immediately.” Peter and Andrew, James and John all responded immediately to the call of Christ. May I be as open to God’s call
and as ready to use my talents in His service as those first disciples were!
The collection amount for January 18/19 is $16,151.78
Your generosity is greatly appreciated and needed!
Be Kind and Merciful through the 2020 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal
All parishioners will receive a mailing from the Diocese of Joliet this month about the 2020 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA). Our annual appeal is vitally important to not only the diocese, but also to our parish as well. The CMAA supports 30 ministries that benefit every parish and allow us all to Be Kind and Merciful to the most vulnerable in our community. 70 percent of any amount we raise over our parish goal will be returned to us. This is a great opportunity for our parish! Please review the materials and then prayerfully reflect on your gift to this year’s annual appeal. If you do not receive a mailing from the diocese about the CMAA, please contact the parish office.
2019 Tax Letters
Please note that all 2019 Tax Letters will be mailed by January 31st to any registered parishioner who contributed during 2019. Thank you!
Administration Ministries
Fr. David, the Staff, the Altar Server Ministry and the Parishioners of St. James the Apostle Parish, would like to extend an enormous “Thank You” to Mrs. Samantha McGuire for her assistance in many ministries here at St. James. She has given much of her time and talent over the last three years to help train our new servers and support them in their ministry, as well as serving as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister. She and her family will be beginning a new chapter of their lives in Tennessee at the end of January, and we hope and pray that she and her family will have many blessings and will prosper in their new home. May God bless and keep you!
A BIG Thank You to Our Christmas Cleanup Crew!
On Sunday, January 12th nearly 75 volunteers showed up to help take down all of the Christmas decorations in the church and narthex. Together we worked and had most everything finished within one hour; a jaw-dropping accomplishment!!
So allow us to express a big Thank You to all of you who showed up–from young to old and every age in between. You were a BIG blessing and we are so glad you gifted us with your time and able bodies, but most of all with your generous hearts! A blessed New Year to all!

Did You Buy a New PC for Christmas?
Did you get a new PC at home or at work? Consider donating your old PC. If you have a PC that has a Duo Core, Core2, I5, I7 label on the PC, Windows 7 (accepted) or Win10 (preferred), we can find a new home for it with local Catholic Charity family. There is a lot of Catholic Charity demand. This is a way to empower a family in need, to connect with information that can truly help them. Each refurbished PC has links to help students with home work, links to self help organizations and other helpful information. If you work in a company that is replacing their PCs, consider donating them to this cause. We will clean the hard drives. Please include the operating system windows 7 or 10 key to help reduce our transfer costs. If you have questions, contact Chuck Reiss 630-858-5381 or [email protected]

It’s time for the women of St. James Parish to nominate a Woman of the Year 2020!
Since the mid 1970’s it has been a tradition to honor a woman of St. James Parish as Woman of the Year. The 43rd Annual Woman of the Year Mass and Reception will be celebrated at the Cathedral of St. Raymond in Joliet on Saturday, April 25th with Rev. John Sebahar, Spiritual Advisor of the Joliet Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (and our St. James Pastor Emeritus) along with many priests of the diocese. Women from all over our diocese gather and the Women of the Year are presented a certificate during the Mass. Those women of our parish who were chosen in the past are listed below.
