A “FEW” WORDS FROM FR. ROBERT

We Are So Fortunate

We are so fortunate to have Bishop Parkes as the bishop of our Diocese of Savannah. I’ve met and spoken with

him several times since his arrival. His passion for his new ministry, and the love and concern he has for our

diocese are so evident. It is a beautiful love and an example of what I like to call “young love.” We all remember

”young love” and many of us still enjoy its warm embrace. Bishop Parkes extends himself over and over again

as he drives around the diocese getting to know people and the work of the Church. Last week many of you

got to see and listen to Bishop Parkes for the rst time when we played the Annual Catholic Appeal video. I am

sure you saw what I am talking about. I know that we will do the best we can to support Bishop Parkes and this

important nancial appeal for the work of the whole diocese. St. Anne Church parishioners always come

through.

Director of Religious Education Needed

I am very sad to announce that Suzanne Zimmermann has informed me that she will be leaving her position as

Director of Religious Education at the end of the year. Suzanne has done a wonderful job in very challenging

circumstances. We are very grateful for her very generous heart and the many gifts she has shared with the

children of our parish. If you are interested in learning more about the DRE position here at St. Anne, please

email me at [email protected] and I will be happy to ll you in. We will be putting more information on

this position in the bulletin next week.

School Bookkeeper Position

We are still trying to complete the sta"ng of our school’s Finance O"ce. Right now, the school bookkeeper

position is still open. Please email your resume to Cathy Eckstein, Parish Business Manager, at

[email protected] if you are interested in this important position.

Thank You Notes

I have nally nished all of my personal and friary Christmas thank you notes. If you gave the friars something

and didn’t receive a note, I apologize. I did the best I could. Sometimes bags, or gifts, or cookies just appeared

under our tree or in the kitchen. Some had no tag or indication where they came from. The friars are most

grateful for and humbled by all of the gifts you’ve shared with us. We are even more grateful for the support

and kind words you share with us every day. Thank you so very much for all that you do for us and our beautiful

parish.

Holy Communion

It has come to our attention that after some people receive communion in the hand they return to their pew

and consume the host there. Because we are all wearing masks I can understand why this may be happening;

however, I hope we can nd a way to receive our Lord as soon as possible after the Eucharist is put in our

hands, even if that means taking a couple steps behind the priest and/or the Eucharistic Minister to pause and

receive there. I also ask that anyone wishing to receive our Lord on the tongue place themselves at the end of

the line. Rest assured, the priest/Eucharistic Minister will purify their hands after each and every communion.

This puts many people at ease and I am grateful to those who follow this procedure.

Embracing Change in Christ

It’s ocially one month since we popped the champagne, toasted

2021 and wrote down a list of resolutions. This is usually the time

when we start to take a good, hard look in the mirror to assess what

we have done — or have not done — with the *rst month of this

brand-new year.

New years can be scary, can’t they? Full of promise, sure, but also

full of room for failure. Full of space for our old baggage, old fears

and the continuation of old mistakes.

The same can be said of Christ and the new life he offers us, if we

are brave enough to accept it. Opportunities like that can be

intimidating. In that moment, we might *nd ourselves like the man

with the unclean spirit crying out: “What have you to do with me,

Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us?”

Jesus is a comforter of the a,icted; he is a consoling *gure, but he

is also a challenging one. Sometimes we have grown attached to our

a,ictions. The idea of correcting bad habits or forming new ones is

frankly terrifying to us. We have a voice deep inside who sees Christ

and his invitation to repentance, and it cries out in fear: “I know who

you are!”

When we live in the present, disavowing the baggage of the past or

fear of the future, we submit ourselves to the promise of

redemption. Let us be brave everyday stewards and invite Christ’s

healing power into our lives. We won’t regret it — I’m sure the

demoniac never did. — Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS ©LPi

January 31, 2021 - 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Most of us are quiet people who desire to live a good and holy life,

promote the values and mission of the Gospel as best we can and

desire to one day inherit the surprise of life eternal God promises

to us. We are not trail blazers. We are simple people who want to

do the simple things of life well. But there are others who left a

more profound impact along the way of the paths they walked.

Folks like Dorothy Day, Martin Luther King, Thomas Merton,

Gandhi, St. Teresa of Calcutta, and many others left lasting

impacts and legacies. Like Moses, they show us by word and deed

who God is and what integrity and a purpose driven life look like.

They show us how to be holy. We need Moses people like these to

give us inspiration, hope and an example of holy living.

We do not need to do what they did or even mirror their

relationship with God. Each one of us is God’s special creation,

with a purpose and soul known only to us. We need to learn how to

open up and bring, without compromise, our soul-ness to life. We

know when someone is authentic and centered because they

always point to truth, even though they struggle and sin

themselves, and they embody an unspoken timeless wisdom that

just sounds and feels right. Jesus taught with this same type of

authority and it astonished many who listened. We do not need to

move mountains, advance a cause, write books or become

notable. All we have to do is become credible witnesses of the

faith we profess. Moses people can teach us how to do this.

St. Oscar Romero was an amazing man and a Moses *gure for

sure. He saw God in the burning bush and brought the ame of

Gospel faith to the poorest of the poor, challenging the evils of the

society in which he lived. He was tireless and persistent. He must

have gotten very close to the problem because it cost him his life.

He suspected it would. St. Romero said, “When we leave Mass, we

ought to go out the way Moses descended Mt Sinai: with his face

shining, with his heart brave and strong to face the world’s

diculties.” We can learn from this wisdom. If we allow the power

of the Mass to truly transform us, we will leave that holy encounter

changed. Our face will shine, and we will have courage. We can

then bring what we have received to life’s challenges. That sounds

doable, doesn’t it? Because of the example of our simple holiness,

people will be amazed. ©LPi

GOSPEL MEDITATION

The 2021 Annual Catholic Appeal will soon be underway. This year’s

theme is “Steadfast in Faith.” Our parish goal is $140,258. With your

help, we can assure the continued support of many important

programs that help thousands in our diocese each year; the

education of our children and seminary students; evangelization and

Christian initiation; the ongoing formation for our clergy; and more.

We are blessed with much. Let us be a blessing to others. Please

help our parish exceed our goal once again this year.

ALWAYS TOGETHER AT MASS

GLORIA

ALL: Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you,

we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus

Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on

us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on

us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit

in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

FIRST READING: Dt 18:15-20

Moses spoke to all the people, saying: “A prophet like me will the LORD, your God, raise up for you from among your own kin;

to him you shall listen. This is exactly what you requested of the LORD, your God, at Horeb on the day of the assembly, when

you said, ‘Let us not again hear the voice of the LORD, our God, nor see this great re any more, lest we die.’ And the LORD

said to me, ‘This was well said. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their kin, and will put my words into his

mouth; he shall tell them all that I command him. Whoever will not listen to my words which he speaks in my name, I myself

will make him answer for it. But if a prophet presumes to speak in my name an oracle that I have not commanded him to

speak, or speaks in the name of other gods, he shall die.’” The Word of the Lord.

ALL: Thanks be to God.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Ps 95:1-2, 6-7, 7-9

R. (8) If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

Come, let us sing joyfully to the LORD;

let us acclaim the rock of our salvation.

Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;

let us joyfully sing psalms to him.

R. If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

Come, let us bow down in worship;

let us kneel before the LORD who made us.

For he is our God,

and we are the people he shepherds, the !ock he guides.

R. If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

Oh, that today you would hear his voice:

“Harden not your hearts as at Meribah,

as in the day of Massah in the desert,

Where your fathers tempted me;

they tested me though they had seen my works.”

R. If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

SECOND READING: 1 Cor 7:32-35

Brothers and sisters: I should like you to be free of anxieties. An unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how

he may please the Lord. But a married man is anxious about the things of the world, how he may please his wife, and he is

divided. An unmarried woman or a virgin is anxious about the things of the Lord, so that she may be holy in both body and

spirit. A married woman, on the other hand, is anxious about the things of the world, how she may please her husband.

I am telling you this for your own benet, not to impose a restraint upon you, but for the sake of propriety and adherence to

the Lord without distraction.

The Word of the Lord.

ALL: Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL: Mk 1:21-28

Then they came to Capernaum, and on the Sabbath Jesus entered the synagogue and taught. The people were astonished

at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes. In their synagogue was a man with an

unclean spirit; he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you

are—the Holy One of God!” Jesus rebuked him and said, “Quiet! Come out of him!” The unclean spirit convulsed him and with

a loud cry came out of him. All were amazed and asked one another, “What is this? A new teaching with authority. He

commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him.” His fame spread everywhere throughout the whole region of Galilee.

The Gospel of the Lord.

ALL: Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

PROFESSION OF FAITH

I believe in one God, the Father almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,

the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father

before all ages.

God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,

begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;

through him all things were made.

For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

(At the words that follow,

up to and including “and became man,” all bow)

and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,

and became man.

For our sake he was crucied under Pontius Pilate,

he suffered death and was buried,

and rose again on the third day

in accordance with the Scriptures.

He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the

dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son is adored and gloried,

who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.

I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins

and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION (For those who cannot be present)

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You

into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You

as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
