Multiple Choice Section (50 minutes)• Conventions of Standard Written English: 10%

– Includes logical, grammatical, structural relationships within sentences• Revision Skills: 40%

– In context of larger passages: Organization, detail, use of language, reasoning, transitions, audience, tone, purpose, sentence-level errors

• Use of Source Materials: 25%– Use of reference materials, evaluation of sources, documentation

• Rhetorical Analysis: 25%– Critical thinking, style, rhetorical effects, evaluation of evidence

College Composition essays will be scored by college faculty using the Online Scoring Network•Essays scored twice a month•Each essay scored by two readers•Scoring Leader trains scorers, tracks inter-reader reliability, resolves conflicts•Readers calibrated to ensure consistency

College Composition Modular

Three options:1. An essay section developed by CLEP and scored by

the college2. A writing assessment developed and scored by the

college3. Some other measure of composition skills/No essay

ACE Recommendation The American Council on Education’s College Credit

Recommendation Service (ACE CREDIT) has evaluated and recommended the awarding of six semester hours, or the equivalent, for a score of 50* on the CLEP College Composition and College Composition Modular examinations.

If colleges do not elect to supplement the Modular version of the examination with the CLEP essay section or one of their own, three semester hours of credit are recommended (for a score of 50).

*50 is equivalent to a mean C in the comparable course
