Meeting Jesus at the Cross – and Beyond During the five weeks of Lent we have diligently continued our vigil of repentance and prayer, following Jesus all the way to the cross and grave, until at last, at long last, we break into joyful celebration and song, surrounded by banks of fragrant lilies on Easter morning. Henri Nouwen, a great spiritual writer, once wrote about Easter saying that even in the season of hope there can still be painful awareness of sinfulness as well as fear, but there is also light breaking through. Something new is happening. Nouwen felt that Easter brings the awareness that God is active even when his presence is not directly noticed. Once again we hear the good news that the stone has been rolled away, rolled away for our benefit. Not so Jesus exits the tomb, Jesus has already risen by the time Mary and the disciples arrive. No, the stone is rolled away so we can see that the tomb is empty. Jesus is no longer there. He is risen from the dead, ALLELUIA! Jesus didn’t rise from the dead to let his oppressors know that he was more powerful than they are. Jesus rose as a sign to those who loved him and followed him, that God’s divine love is stronger than death. Jesus overcame death and the grave. But that is not the end of the story!! Easter – a time when we celebrate with lively hymns of joy and shouts of Alleluia! Christ is risen, he is risen indeed – Alleluia is just the beginning. It is a season of joyous thanksgiving for all God has done for us, and the new life we have because of his sacrificial love for us. Easter announces the news that evil has ultimately been overcome by good. Something new is happening. We see new life all about us at Easter – budding trees and blooming flowers, but most of all we are once again reminded there is nothing, not even death, that can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior – ALLELUIA! Update-Senior Pastor Call Process

The Call committee is meeting every week reviewing candidate profiles and interviewing candidates. We have narrowed our list to a few final Pastors we interviewed. We hope and pray that God makes his guidance clear and leads us to one of these candidates. So far, the committee has: Reviewed 40 candidate profiles Considered 20 candidates for telephone or video

conversations Removed 8 candidates because they are in discussion

with other congregations. Had telephone or video conversations with 9

candidates as a committee. Removed 4 candidates after initial discussions with

them. Had one decline to be considered after video

conversation. Had 3 video conversations with new candidates in

March. Have 4 under consideration after initial conversations

and one “in-person” interview.

Please pray with us for the Lord to guide us in our mission to find and call the right Pastor to lead our congregation. We have confidence and faith than He will. God's Peace, First English Call Committee.

The only item on the agenda for this meeting is the following Motion from Church Council: “That the Call to Rev. Christina Veres, as Associate Pastor of First English,

Some notes on the worship guide (bulletin) You may have noticed some changes in the worship guide (bulletin) in the last few weeks. For the people coming to the early service (9:30 am) the changes have not been as large as for the late service (11:00). It is still a work in progress but we are slowly getting there. Why these changes? A goal for the congregation that is expressed again and again is to draw new people into worship. The hymnbook we have is not very user friendly for visitors (and sometimes not for members either) so we are doing these changes to make it easier for visitors and members to participate in worship. What has happened? For one thing the font and font size has changed to make it easier to read.

The second thing to note is that all the announcements you are used to receiving on several separate sheets are now part of the booklet you re-ceive. You will also find an introduction to the day and to each reading in this section. 11:00 worship service changes. The entire worship service (liturgy) is now printed in your bulletin, including the music for the musical parts. No more flipping back and forth to find what is in the hymnbook and what is in the bulletin. You will only need the hymnbook to sing the hymns. During the Season of Lent we introduce the Service of the Word for the non-communion worship. Beginning April 19 (3rd Sunday of Easter) we will introduce a new Communion worship setting – Setting I. The order of this service is identical to what we are used to – but the music will be a little different.

No Applause, Please

Have you ever heard the expression, faith is “caught”, more than it’s “taught”? The best way for children and youth to know what faith is all about is to be part of the community that laughs together, cries together, eats together, and worships together – a community that lives and shares its faith with all. When a child is baptized, we promise to be active in nurturing their faith. And we are also nurtured in our own faith by their presence, trust, and fresh points of view. Worship is one of the basic ways in which people are formed in their faith, and children and youth learn to worship by worshipping. This is very important - we all know that children and youth learn best by doing. As we all come to worship and offer our gifts, be it as a person in the pew, usher, greeter, custodian, choir member, acolyte, preacher, organist, etc., so do children and youth when they have an opportunity to share faith and their gift in worship. One example of this is the children’s choir and youth bell choir. It is important to remember that their participation in worship is not a performance - it is part of worship for all of us, led by our children and youth. Therefore we ask that you refrain from applauding after they have sung or played. There will be lots of time after the service to express your appreciation in person as you speak with the children and youth. We want them to learn to worship, and to learn to assist in leading worship. The same holds true for the adult choir, btw. Take the time to thank members individually for sharing their gift of music, but applause really has no place in worship, as it is not a performance. The exception to that note is the postlude played by the organist. Take a moment and sit and listen to the music and then it is appropriate to offer thanks for the music with applause.

FEELC COUNCIL MINUTES March, 2015

The meeting was called to order by President, Marc Simone, at 7:37 P.M. Pastor Ulmanis offered the opening prayer.

SECRETARY’S REPORT: Claudette Momenee moved, Patty Foster seconded, the minutes of the February meeting be accepted. Motion carried.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Pam Southard presented reports for the months of Dec., 2014, Jan., 2015 & Feb., 2015. Pam Southard moved, John Nyquist seconded, the three reports be accepted. Motion carried.

BOARD OF STEWARDSHIP & FINANCE: Waynette Hostetler The ATT contract is still being studied. The possibility of Automatic Giving is being revisited.

FINANCIAL SECRETARY’S REPORT: John Nyquist The First Quarter contributions are being posted.

BOARD OF CHURCH PROPERTIES: Marc Simone Proceeds from the Chili Cook-off were approximately $650. The joint effort with Christ the King Lutheran Church of Grosse Pointe was a wonderful evening of fellowship with our neighbors.

BOARD OF EVANGELISM: Patty Foster Advertisements will be coming out soon in the newspapers. Updating of our membership records is being studied.

BOARD OF SOCIAL ACTION: Diann Ohman McCREST is in need of more host churches. Diann will invite a representative to speak at our next meeting. We would like more input as to what our responsibilities would be. Dillon Energy has donated many boxes of food to our Food Pantry for which Diann has written a letter of appreciation.

BOARD OF PARISH EDUCATION: Christine Simone An Easter Egg Hunt will be held on Palm Sunday. VBS will be held the week of Aug. 3 from 9:00 A.M.- 12:00 P.M.

BOARD OF FELLOWSHIP: Claudette Momenee The Pierogi Class was filled to capacity. Requests have been received for classes of other topics. The committee will follow up on these suggestions. A trip is planned to visit the DIA on April 24, 2015. The cost is free. A bus from the DIA will pick up passengers at the church at noon and return about 4:00 P.M. 15-40 persons are needed. Lunch will be at each person’s expense. There will be a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board.

Mothers will be honored on Mother’s Day with a flower. Fathers will be honored on Father’s Day with a Barbecue Lunch.

BOARD OF YOUTH MINISTRY: John Nyquist The Youth held a bake sale last Sat. during the Piano Festival.

BOARD OF WORSHIP & MUSIC: Sandy Ford The committee will ask for donations for more hymnals. The possibility of one service at 10:00 A.M. during the summer months is being studied. Traditional Communion would be offered on the 1st & 3rd Sundays and Communion by intinction at the 2nd & 4th Sundays. Thursday evening services would continue as is. The Grunyons will present a concert on Apr. 26 at 4:00 P.M.

ASSOCIATE PASTOR’S REPORT: No report

INTERIM PASTOR’S REPORT: Pastor Ulmanis He has completed and mailed the annual report requested by the National Church. He has hosted the Cluster meeting and held a meeting with the readers, communion assistants and ushers, He announced his engagement to Lela Creighton. They are planning to be married in 2016. He is preparing for surgery sometime after Easter. He suggested we have an official and friendlier e-mail address for the church. This will be pursued. He suggested we establish a membership data base. For insurance purposes we should have a record of a background check on our employees and whoever has keys to the church. Pam Southard will contact Church Mutual for more information. The camera for the TV in the Gathering Center needs attention. Marc Simone will look into this.

OLD BUSINESS: Roger Ulmer volunteered to represent FEELC at the Synod Assembly May 16, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Farmington Hills. We will use the Clef to ask for one more volunteer. The Call Committee is still interviewing candidates by Skype with personal interviews to follow when the field of candidates is narrowed.

NEW BUSINESS: Christine Simone moved, Claudette Momenee seconded, we allow Renata and David Conger to serve Sangria at the reception following the baptism of Zerelda Conger. Motion carried. Christine Simone moved, Patty Foster seconded, we allow wine or champagne to be served at the party for Ruth Engle’s granddaughter on Apr. 25. Motion carried.

Waynette Hostetler moved, Pam Southard seconded, we recommend to the congregation the extension of Pastor Veres’ contract to May, 2016. A congregational meeting for approval is to be held on April 19 immediately following the 11:00 A.M. service. Motion carried.

ADJOURNMENT: John Nyquist moved, Waynette Hostetler seconded, the meeting be adjourned. Motion carried. Pastor Ulmanis offered the closing prayer. The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 P.M.

WOMEN’S CIRCLE BIBLE STUDY

The topics of our Women’s Circle Bible studies for this

winter into spring offer a variety of subjects. Hope Circle continues in the study from “Gather” magazine, “Transforming Life and Faith.” This study looks at the transforming power of Jesus, in the transformation stories of Paul, Moses, Lydia, Philip and the Ethiopian, plus more. Hope Circle does not meet during

Lent. The focus for the next meeting May 6th will be the story of the suffering and endurance of Job. Grace Circle will be studying the book of 1 Peter at their next meeting on March 23rd. Peace Circle con-tinues in their study of the book “Bad Girls of the Bible” by Liz Curtis Higgs. All women of First English are encouraged to participate in the learning, service and fellowship

of one our various Circles.

9:30a.m. ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL On October 31, 1517 Martin Luther nailed his “95 Theses” to the church door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg Germany. Historians have assigned this event as the beginning of the Protestant Reformation. Thus in 2017 we will celebrate the 500 Anniversary of the Reformation. Our Presiding Bishop, Elizabeth Eaton, has suggested that, as we look forward to that celebration, we study Luther’s Small Catechism. She points out that “it could be argued that no other experience is more universally Lutheran than studying Luther’s Small Catechism.”

So, our Adult Sunday School Class for this fall will be an overview of Luther’s Small Catechism. Not only will this give us an opportunity to celebrate our Lutheran Heritage, but Luther’s Catechism is also an excellent review of the basics of the Christian Faith!

We have a nice size group on Sunday mornings, but we would love to have YOU join us as well. Our sessions meet during the Sunday School Hour, 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. in the Lounge.

BUS TRIP TO THE DETROIT INSTITUTE OF ARTS

FRIDAY, APRIL 24th for senior age members of First English and guests sponsored by the Fellowship Board. There is no charge for the bus trip to the DIA, docent gallery tour (about 45 minutes) and a reception upon

arrival assorted cookies, coffee and tea . Lunch is on your own and can be eaten during the reception in the same room. You will have a hour after the docent tour to explore on your own. The bus will leave the church

parking lot at Noon (please arrive by 11:45 a.m.) and return about 4 p.m. The trip is limited to 40 persons. Deadline for reservations is Wednesday, April 15th.

COLUMBARIUM FOR FIRST ENGLISH

The Columbarium has been completed and a dedication date will be announced soon.

Church Council at it’s meeting on January 18th decided that the price of the niches up to Easter Sunday, will be $1,500.00; after, they will sell for $1,800.00. The Niches will hold two urns and will be assigned on a “first come-first-served” basis, with members be-ing able to choose the location of their niche within the Columbarium. If you are inter-ested in purchasing a companion niche, please contact the church office.

BOARD OF SOCIAL ACTION Pantry You’ve heard the expression “back to basics.” This time we’re talking food. Each month we’ll ask members to donate another “basic” to restock our pantry. April is everything month. We depleted our stock during the Christmas season. Please consider buying one or two items for our shelves. Obviously if you find a great deal for pantry basics, bring ‘em in. There’s always room for more! Please be mindful of expiration dates on all food items. Unfortunately we have had to remove items from the pantry because of expired dates. Thank you for your help! Pantry Windfall In case you haven’t peeked into our pantry lately, our shelves are no longer bare thanks to Dillon Energy Services. Patty Groezinger saw how our food supply dwindled at Christmas and mentioned her firm would like to donate some basics after the holidays. We expected a bag or two, not boxes and boxes of groceries! Everything from mac and cheese and canned fruit and vegetables to brownie and muffin mixes and frosting, you name it. See Patty’s note on the bulletin board thanking us for our support to the community. Really, it’s the other way around! Pantry angels appear out of nowhere. Nearly every Sunday, someone drops a bag at the door. Thank you Dillon Energy Services and FELC members for your generous hearts!

Immanuel Giving Tree Thank You You’ve heard about Christmas in July, well, the Johnson family sent us a heartfelt Christmas card thank you in March. It reads:

“I just wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart. This is not only a dear blessing to my family, but it was a needed display of God’s love for us and his ability to abundantly meet all my needs and my desires as they align with his will for me. Youth-led Worship On April 26th, at the 11:00 am service, please join us for a special worship service led by our Middle and High School Youth. Hear testimonies, learn some new songs, and witness how your support has helped to grow the faith of First English.

Drive-in Lunch Let us make lunch for you right after Youth-led Worship! For $5.00, the High School Youth will serve you a hot dog, chips, drink, and ice cream drive-in style—on roller skates and everything—sure to be entertaining and tasty! All proceeds go to the Youth Scholarship fund for trips to Camp and National Gathering. Thanks for your support!

Confirmation Sunday The 8th Grade class will be confirmed on May 3rd, during the 11:00am service. We hope that family, friends, and all brothers and sisters in Christ will attend to share in this momentous occasion.

Vacation Bible School Mark your calendars! VBS will take place during the morning hours of August 3-7 for children entering Pre-school through 6th Grade this fall, so spread the word to all your favorite kids! Current middle and high school stu-dents, as well as adults, are encouraged to volunteer. If you are interested in helping, please contact Renata, Pas-tor Chris, or Christine Simone. Keep an eye out for our volunteer sign-up station!

Children’s Offerings for LWR Our children have offered up over $140 so far this year, which is enough to donate a goat and chickens. For

farmers in the Philippines, a hen and chicks means eggs to eat, eggs to sell and chicks to grow a flock. Em-power them and give the gift that keeps on giving: independence, sus-tainability and success. Please keep the donations coming and check out the progress thermometer, across from the office, to learn more.

What We’re Learning This Month Preschool through fifth grade are finishing up their lesson on Holy Week & Easter. After break, they will learn about one of Jesus’ most famous parables in “The Sower.” Come learn what happens when we share the Good News with others!

After Easter, Middle School will learn about “End Times” which can be a confusing but extremely interest-ing topic. We’d love to hear your thoughts on it, so please join us!

Remember, there is NO Sunday School on Easter (April 5th).

Accepting enrollment for 3 & 4 year olds for September 2015

First English Lutheran Preschool offers an academic program to help prepare your child for kindergarten. With a small class size, our program includes Bible lessons, math, music, science, art, language, beginning reading concepts and physical development. We have a very large and bright classroom for your child to spend their morning socializing with friends.

The month of April brings learning about Easter and spring to the pre-school classroom. This month the children will learn about the events of Holy Week, have some time off from school during the Easter break week

and plant bean seeds when school resumes. One of our letters of the week in April is Y and we’ll learn a little yoga and when we’re working with the letter C we’ll have a campsite set up in the classroom which is always a hit with the children. Mrs. Jackson and I will attend an early childhood conference at the end of the month where we’ll learn new ideas/methods to bring back to the classroom. Continue to watch the hallway outside our classroom as we share photos and spring projects with those who pass by! Remember to watch our hallway as we share photos and projects with you!

UP from the last quarter, our latest quarterly check was in the amount of $188.79!! In the beginning we were

doesn’t cost YOU anything (It only costs Kroger)……..it only costs you a little time to register your card.
