Monitoring the Future • Monitoring the Future is an annual
national survey of 8th, 10th, and 12th graders
• Since 1975, the survey has measured how teens report their drug, alcohol, and cigarette use and related attitudes
• 47,703 students from 360 public and private schools participated in the 2017 survey

• Promising results: binge drinking rates, cigarette smoking rates and opiate use have dropped significantly over the years

What is Vaping? • AKA- “Juuling” • Vaping is the act of inhaling and exhaling the
aerosol, often referred to as vapor, produced by an e-cigarette or similar device
• E-cigarettes were initially designed as a harm reduction approach/cessation aid for those who have struggled to quit smoking
• Has morphed into a craze with youth that is more about flavors and doing tricks

How Does an E-Cig Work?
• How does it work? A rechargeable battery powers a heating element called an atomizer which touches a cartridge holding e-liquid. The atomizer heats (steams) the liquid turning it into a vapor which is inhaled and delivers nicotine to the bloodstream
