Libraries change lives.

If there is one thing that I have learned over my years as a librarian, it is

that libraries do change lives for the better. Like teachers, many librarians

have the satisfaction of seeing how their work can improve the lives and

futures of the people around them. I remember one energetic and mischie-

vous little boy, who was being very loosely homeschooled. He could

barely read and spent almost all day in the library, probably because there

were adults there who would listen to him. He did everything in his power

to avoid getting an education. But he loved anime and kept asking us to

get him stuff about it. That’s when he discovered the computers. The

thing about computers is that you have to be able to read to use them. All

of a sudden, this kid was interested in learning. That kid is a man now,

and he may still be mischievous but he makes an honest living and takes

care of himself and those around him. I am proud of him every time I see

him in town.

That story can be repeated hundreds of times for every library and for

every generation. Libraries connect people with things that interest them,

help them, entertain them, educate them, enliven them.

Every year, we gather statistics on how many people use our libraries,

how many books they check out, how many videos they watch, how

many times they use the computer — but the one thing about libraries that

matters the most can’t be tallied on a number sheet.

Special programs at the Library on No School days

To help parents during the school year, the Library

District offers programs on days there is no school.

The program, intended for kids whose parents trust

them enough to leave them at the library for the day,

will be broken into several segments including crafts,

fun but educational activities, movies, entertainment,

and snacks.

We will have a more specific agenda of activities

available at the library in the week prior to the pro-

gram.

Kids are welcome to come all day or participate in

just one or two activities. This is NOT daycare, how-

ever. Parents should never leave kids alone at the li-

brary who are unable to regulate themselves. If they

leave, we cannot be responsible for tracking them

down! If your child participates, please make sure

your library record is up-to-date however, so that we

can call you if there is a problem.

Dates in 2013 we will do this are:

Sept. 19, noon to 4 p.m.

Sept. 20, 10-4 p.m.

Sept. 23, 10-4 p.m.

Are you looking for a job? A promotion? A really

good resume to have just in case? If so, come to the

Idaho Springs Library at 1 pm on the 4th Saturday of

every month for one of our Job Hunting Seminars. Pre-sented in collaboration with

the Tri-County Workforce,

these workshops will cover a

variety of topics pertaining to

the current job market.

Laura Barwick of Tri-

County Workforce will con-

duct these free seminars for

the public. Some of the topics

included are how to identify

key words to build the perfect

resume, how to use the inter-

net to make job searches easi-

er, and how to decide which

jobs to apply for.

Library staff will also

show participants how to best

utilize library resources, such

Georgetown’s Turn!

Now that the renovation is complete at the Idaho

Springs Public Library, the District is turning its at-

tentions to the John Tomay Memorial Library’s

needs. As a first step, the District has applied for and

received a $10,000 grant from the Colorado Histori-

cal Society for an assessment of the building.

The building has a few known problems, such as a

leaking skylight, but the assessment will help us find

out if there are any other problems we need to fix.

Local contractor Craig Abrahamson will be doing the

assessment for the library.

It’s Magic in Georgetown

Connie Elstun will perform her magic at the

Georgetown Library Games Night at 5 p.m. on Fri-

day, Sept. 27!
