Red Lion Pumps

Well pumps are designed specifically to pump cleanwater from a well to your home. All components in contact with your drinking water are strictly tested to ensure safe drinking water. Red Lion offers three types of well pumps: shallow well jet pumps, convertible jet pumps and 4" submersible pumps. All three require a pressure switch to turn the pump on and off. When the pressure falls below 30 psi, the pump starts. When the pressure reaches 50 psi, the pump stops. All Red Lion jet pumps come with a pressure switch.

Whether you are considering purchasing a pump to replace an existing pump or for a new installation, it is important to determine and select the correct pump.

Introduction to Well Pumps

For a new installation, you’ll need to know the well’s depth to water to help you select the right type of pump. The depth of the well to water is easily determined by attaching a small, floatable device to the end of a string. Lower the string into the well until the device floats. Simply mark the string at ground level, remove from the well, and measure the length. Based on your well's depth to water, choose from one of these three options:

New Installation

Shallow Well, Convertible Jet, Submersible – How Do I Select the Right Pump?

The easiest way to select a pump is to choose the same pump that you currently have. If you aren’t sure which pump that you currently have, here’s how to tell the difference. If you have a submersible well pump, the pump is located inside the well. Whereas shallow well jet pumps and convertible jet pumps are installed in a dry area outside of the well such as in a basement or a pump house. If you aren’t sure whether you have a shallow well or convertible jet pump, look at the number of pipes suctioning the water from the well to the pump. If your pump has one suction pipe (see figure A or B), your pump is set-up for a shallow well application. If your pump has two suction pipes (see figure C) you have a convertible jet pump set-up for a deep well application. A submersible well pump can be used for both deep well and shallow well applications.

Pump Replacement


Shallow well jet pumps are designed specifically for shallow wells with a pumping depth less than 25' deep (see figure A). We offer cast iron and stainless steel shallow well jet pumps. Stainless steel pumps are primarily used for more aggressive water conditions.

Shallow Well Jet Pumps

Convertible jet pumps can be used for deep wells (pumping depths between 25' and 90' deep) or shallow wells (pumping depths less than 25' deep). Convertible jet pumps are generally used for deep wells, but if you have a shallow well with a fluctuating water table or a water table that is close to the 25' level, this is also a good option. In a deep well applications, the injector is attached to the pipe inside the well (see figure C). In a shallow well application, the injector is attached to the pump (see figure B).

Convertible Jet Pumps

A submersible pump can be used in either a shallow well or deep well application, and are the only option in a well with a pumping depth greater than 90'. The primary advantage of using a submersible pump is that it is much quieter than a jet pump.

4" Submersible Pumps

Submersible pumps (see figure D) come with a choice of 2-wire or 3-wire (not including the ground wire). 2-wire submersible pumps get wired directly into the power source. 3-wire submersible pumps get wired into a control box, and the control box gets wired into the power source. A 2-wire pump is more simple to install, but the pump's electronics are located inside the pump. If the electronics fail, the pump needs to be replaced. Since a 3-wire pump uses an external control box, most failures can be remedied quickly and easily by replacing the control box or one of the control box’s components. If the control box is faulty, the pump doesn’t have to be pulled from the well. All Red Lion 1 hp and smaller 3-wire submersible pumps include a control box.

Determine well pump size (hp) by calculating how much water your house will use. This is easily done by counting the number of water fixtures in your home: showers, faucets, outdoor spigots, and water using appliances (dishwashers, clothes washers, refrigerators). Each fixture requires one gallon per minute (gpm) of flow. The gpm is clearly marked on the front of each Red Lion carton.

What Size Pump Do You Need?

A properly-sized tank will prevent the pump from cycling on and off frequently. A 6-gallon tank will require your pump to run every time you flush your toilet, every time you fill the sink, etc. A 33-gallon tank will reduce the number of cycles by over five times, extending the life of your pump. To size a tank for your home, count the number of fixtures your home has including all faucets, toilets, and water consuming appliances (do not include water treatment appliances such as a hot water tank or water filters). Multiply the number by three and look at the next largest tank. For example, 8 fixtures x 3 = 24 gallons. Therefore, an RL34 would be the best tank for this example.

Red Lion offers two types of sprinkler pumps: sprinkler and irrigation system pumps (RLSP series) and portable sprinkler/booster pumps (RJSE-50 and RJSE-75SS).

Red Lion Pumps

These pumps are designed to draw water from a well or lake and used with a hose with a single sprinkler or garden hose sprayer attached. These pumps feature a convenient handle and a power cord, just plug it in and use it for watering a lawn, watering a garden or general water transfer applications such as filling a fountain. These pumps can also be used to boost pressure from your home to wash a car or clean a deck or driveway.

Choose from our heavy duty cast iron sprinkler pump or our corrosion-resistant stainless-steel model ideally suited for aggressive water conditions.

Many sprinkler head manufacturers will provide customized plans for very little cost or even free. These plans include detailed instructions, what types and how many sprinkler heads are needed, and a list of materials and tools you’ll need. All you need to do is supply them with a detailed drawing of your property.

Large properties will have multiple zones set-up so that different parts of the property are watered at different times. Multiple zones allow more sprinklers to be set-up over the entire yard with just one pump. Programmable control systems are available to water each zone at a different time.

Sprinkler/Irrigation SystemsI want to install a sprinkler system myself. How do I get started?

What is a zone?

What size sprinkler pump do you need?New Installations:Once you know how many sprinkler heads you need you can determine what size pump you require. As a general guideline, sprinkler heads with 1/2" fittings require approximately 3 gpm per head, sprinkler heads with 3/4" fittings require approximately 6 gpm per head. Note: This is a guideline only. For precise calculation add the total GPM requirements of all sprinkler heads in a single zone. The gom requirements are specified on the sprinkler head packaging.

Existing Systems:You will need to know what size pipe you currently have. You can determine this by measuring the outside of the pipe and comparing it to the chart below.

1. Expose a pipe connected to the sprinkler head and wrap a piece of string around the pipe one time.

2. Mark the length.

3. Match your measurement with the data below to determine your pipe fitting size. This brochure includes the number of sprinkler heads for both 1/2" and 3/4" pipe fittings. Select the pump that can handle at least the number of sprinkler heads for your fitting size.

Do I need a brass impeller or a thermoplastic impeller?

Protecting Your Investment

Our premium models feature a brass impeller and are designed for more demanding applications and water conditions such as when drawing water from areas with sediment like canal ditches or for use with weir feeders. The thermoplastic impellers are designed for systems drawing water from a well or clear lake. Brass impeller conversion kits are available for the RLSP series pumps.

The motors on these pumps are not water-proof. If storing outside, ensure the pump is protected from the elements. Keep it in a pump house, garage, or crawl space. A simple dog house can be used as a pump house and will protect your pump from the elements.

Well before the freezing temperatures arrive, drain your system completely. Some systems are drained by opening the main drain valve(s) or you may need to blow out the sprinkler system using compressed air (never exceed 50 psi and always wear proper eye protection!). If not done properly, your sprinkler system could be damaged or you could be seriously injured. If you’re not sure which method is best for your system, consult with a sprinkler professional or hire a professional to do this task for you. Once the system is drained, ensure your controller has been turned off and disconnect the power to your pump to avoid accidentally starting the system. In the Spring remember to prime the pump and reconnect it to your power source.
