TEXT 2
Read the Text and Do the Exercises Below
Section 1: ____________________________
Community helpers are constantly in the news. Every day we read stories about firemen, police
officers, paramedics, medical personnel and construction workers. All of them help the
community whenever people need them. To know what a community helper is, first you need to
know what a community is.
Section 2:______________________________
A community is composed of different groups of people who live and work together. The
community has a specific location (it is in one place), it has rules and laws that people must
follow and the people work together to solve their problems. One example of a community is
your family, then comes your neighbourhood, and finally the town or city that you live in. So
what is a community helper?
A community helper is anyone in the community who helps others by offering a service, for
example, the Police Force, the Fire Service and the Emergency Medical Services but there are
many, many more. How many can you think of?
Section 3:______________________________
First, think about your own home. Your Mum can be considered a community helper. In your
family it is probably your mum who cooks the dinner, cleans the house, does the laundry and
helps in a thousand different ways every day but not all families do have a Mum, and they are
still a community, so who does all the jobs in those families? Well, there is Dad and Grandma,
maybe a housekeeper or a gardener, a babysitter, older brothers and sisters, the list goes on and
on. Everyone can be a community helper.
Section 4:______________________________
Just suppose you clean up your room. It is only your room; you don't share it with anyone. Do
you think that this makes you a community helper? The answer is not really, because you are
helping your Mum and yourself but you are not helping the whole community. To be a
community helper you must do something that may help everyone, so cleaning the living room
will make you a community helper.

Announcer: Hello America! We create documentaries, projects and reports for the
public radio and the internet. So you can switch on your computer or listen to us in your
car! This week we have the sad story of the city of Small Springs. A year ago, a big
storm destroyed the houses, businesses and the lives of many people. After one year
of the storm, a lot of families are working hard to build their homes again. Today we
meet Naomi Foster, who survived by floating on her refrigerator.
Reporter: Hello, Naomi. Do you live alone?
Naomi: No, I don’t. I’m married, you know. I live with my husband and two children,
Annie and Tom. They are at school now.Reporter: And how is your house?
Naomi: It’s in bad shape. The kitchen and the bathroom are still wet, there’s water in
there but the bedroom is fine. My husband started to repair the house, but we need
more money. We’re waiting for some help from the government. The president
promised to help us after the terrible rain last year. But we never got any money from
them. And we need it!
Reporter: What are you going to do?
Naomi: We have a lot of problems and it’s difficult to live here, but we’ll stay. It’s our
home and we’re not going to leave it. But we’re not happy with this. What’s going to
happen with the house? We don’t know! Will the government send the money? We
don’t know! We can’t sleep well at night thinking of this.
Reporter: Thanks, Naomi. Good luck with your house!
