MANY THANKS TO the Rotarians, who donated $2000 to

Fannin Literacy Action Group (FLAG) and also delivered a

number of dictionaries. The dictionaries were distributed to

students of English as a Second Language. These

students were thrilled to have an English dictionary of their

own to further their studies.

ESL students like Phuong Hoang (R) were recipients of

GAINESVILLE/HALL COUNTY ALLIANCE FOR LITERACY

THE 26TH ANNUAL Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee was held

on May 16. The event raised $15,000 for literacy programs

in Hall county. Local newspaper Gainesville Times

reported:

“In a night when seven teams were taken down by

words like whittawer, autochthonous and esquamulose,

the Godspellers from Grace Episcopal Church won the

26th annual adult Spelling Bee with a simpler final word —

umami.

“Amy Bussler recognized it as a “cooking word,” walked

to the microphone and spelled it quickly to give her team

the victory Tuesday night at Hosch Theater on the Brenau

University campus to benefit the efforts of the Gainesville-

Hall County Alliance for Literacy…

“She and her teammates, attorneys Rob Harris and

Jack Park, earned a hard-fought victory over the Lanier

Technical College Word Nerds…

“The other teams participating in the event were from

Brenau, First Baptist Church, First United Methodist

Church, the Gainesville Rotary, Hall County Library and

The Times.”

THE ALLIANCE PURCHASED books for the Cooley Drive and

Gainesville Housing Authority summer reading programs.

All 120 RISE students received a new book. The RISE

program appreciated the quantity and quality of the

books—there were enough to give each child an age-

appropriate book and more left over to use as rewards for

the rest of the RISE session.

COBBWORKS LITERACY COUNCIL

COBBWORKS LITERACY COUNCIL (CLC) held its third annual

Are You Smarter Than a 10-Year-Old? fundraiser on May

11 at The Mansour Center in Marietta.

Company teams, including groups from InfoMart, the

Atlanta Braves, SJV & Associates, The Home Depot, and

Beazley/Troutman, competed against each other

answering grade school-level questions. In the end,

InfoMart reigned victorious and took home the 2017

Smarty Pants award. The friendly competition helped the

CLC raise more than $16,000. In addition to team

sponsorships, the money raised came from raffle ticket

sales, a silent auction, and generous donations from

individuals and companies.

The charitable funds will allow the CLC to grow their

partnership with YELLS (Youth Empowerment through

Learning, Leading and Serving) by providing laptops to

support digital literacy courses. In addition, the CLC will

support Early Literacy Homebound, a program that

promotes and supports literacy in entire households where

an elementary age child may be struggling with reading.

CobbWorks Literacy Council will also be providing

scholarships totaling $2,500 to four Marietta high school

students planning to attend technical schools.

LITERACY VOLUNTEERS OF TIFTON-TIFT COUNTY

LITERACY VOLUNTEERS OF TIFTON-TIFT COUNTY (LVTTC)

was awarded a grant of $990 in books from the National

Book Fund of ProLiteracy. The books will equip volunteer

tutors to help adult students in basic reading and math

skills and GED test preparation.

The LVVTC board, staff, and tutors had a celebratory

box opening and press conference on June 29. Last year,

ProLiteracy awarded $122,180 in grants to literacy

programs nationwide, and only two in Georgia: one in

Atlanta and one in Statesboro.

Elizabeth Medley, a social studies professor at

Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and tutor for LVTTC,

said that helping people learn to read and write enables

them to be their own advocates. “They can read and

complete their own forms and adequately represent

themselves in a way they couldn’t before. I am looking

forward to using these books with my student.”

LVTTC anticipates providing new books for the 20

students currently enrolled in classes and plans to provide

online computer programs and financial literacy books for

25 to 30 new students.

ON MAY 4, fifteen students from the citizenship class

offered through Literacy Volunteers of Tifton-Tift County

celebrated the completion of the program. A graduation

ceremony and reception were held at the BB&T Tifton Main

Office. BB&T provided a grant to Literacy Volunteers to

sponsor the classes, funding the books and instruction.

Dina Willis taught the classes twice a week in space

donated by Our Divine Savior Catholic Church.

“We are so grateful for BB&T wanting to help these

residents of Tifton be prepared to fulfill their dreams of

becoming U.S. citizens,” said Bonnie Sayles, Executive

Director of Literacy Volunteers. “We are so proud of the

students who applied themselves and gave up their

evenings these many weeks to learn what they need to

know … We also thank the United Way of South Central

Georgia for providing funds for English language books for

those wanting to learn English.”

CRAWFORD AND MILLER SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

“I am leading

the direction

of my life, and

that begins

with my

education.”

Juan Campa

Crawford Scholarship Recipient

Nominated by Gainesville/Hall County

Alliance for Literacy

Juan Campa earned his GED

credential in February of this year.

Shortly after, he was accepted to

Lanier Technical College where he

earned a certificate in forklift

operation. This sparked his interest in

engineering technology. He now plans

to earn a degree in Machine Tool

Technology and start a business

contracting with large machinery and

manufacturing companies. Juan is the

first member of his family to complete

a high school degree and attend a

postsecondary institution.

“I’d like to be

the person

who gives

[children] all of

the encourage-

ment and tools

to be able to

be successful

member[s] of

society.”

Tessa Inez Phillips-Wheat

Crawford Scholarship Recipient

Nominated by Carroll County LIFT

For Tessa Inez Phillips-Wheat, family

has been the key motivator on her

path towards higher education. She

and her husband enrolled in GED

classes together and they had the

honor of delivering a joint speech at

their graduation ceremony. Tessa

credits her own children, two of which

are autistic, for opening her eyes to

what she loves to do: helping children

find the joy of learning. As a current

student of West Georgia Technical

College, Tessa is working to attain an

Early Childhood Care and Education

degree. She plans to earn a master’s

degree and become a teacher.

“I have always told

my girls to never give

up on their dreams,

no matter what. Yes,

[this is] hard … but

I’m doing it.”

Amanda Melton

Dual recipient of Crawford and Miller scholarships

Nominated for the Crawford and Miller scholarships by Upson County READ

Amanda Melton is a student at Southern Crescent Technical College with plans to serve in the

medical field and one day become a surgeon. After earning her GED credential earlier this year,

Amanda enrolled in college and was accepted into the Health Care Assistant program. As a

mother, Amanda hopes to create and inspire a better life for herself and her children.

“I knew I had

to do

something to

be a better

mother and

provider for

my kids.”

Chiffon Johnson

Miller Scholarship Recipient

Nominated by Literacy Volunteers of

Tifton-Tift County

Chiffon Johnson plans to attend

Southern Regional Technical College,

Tifton Campus where she will learn

billing and medical coding before

earning her diploma in Early

Childhood Development. As a working

mother, Chiffon has seen the need for

quality day care and plans, with further

education, to one day open a day care

of her own.

“I want to

continue my

education and

learn

everything

that is needed

to help me

work towards

my career goal

… and make a

positive

impact on

children’s

lives.”

Jenna Bailey

Miller Scholarship Recipient

Nominated by Troup County CLCP

West Georgia Technical College

student Jenna Bailey knew early on

what career she wanted to pursue. At

the age of 16, she began volunteering

at an Early Learning Center. She

recalls that seeing the smiles on the

children’s faces when they learned

something new was what made her

most happy. As a recipient of the

Shirley Carver Miller Scholarship,

Jenna is now that much closer to

reaching her goal.
