re:generation Ministry Overview re:generation is Christ-centered discipleship through recovery. We all experience broken ness in life. At

re:generation, we believe that anyone can experience new life and freedom by working through steps of healing given to us by God through the Bible. By working through these biblical steps within an authentic community, people can experience freedom from substance abuse, codependency, pornography, eating disorders, depression, fear, control, emotional/physical abuse, same sex attraction, anger, obsessive thoughts and many other personal struggle.

Ministry Model re:generation is a biblical 12-step process structured within the context of small groups. It takes about a

year for a participant to go through the entire re:generation process. We utilize a one-night ministry model. Everyone gathers together during the first 45 minutes for a time of worship, teaching and/or testimony. After a corporate gathering, men and women split to participate in small groups or training. Daily curriculum is provided throughout the duration of the ministry. Daily step lessons take about 30 minutes per day.

Timeline

• A participant spends the first two months working through simple curriculum (Groundwork) to demonstrate readiness for a step group and to build trust with others.

• When an individual finishes the Groundwork curriculum, he or she is placed into a step group with other participants who have demonstrated readiness. This step group is closed to new participants and spends 8-10 months working through the 12 Steps of re:generation

Leadership / Training

• Ongoing leadership training is provided with classroom training and online training videos

• Ministry development training is also provided for church interested in re:generation

SESSION ONE // MISSION & VISION

What is re:generation recovery?

Christ-centered 12 step discipleship Mission: To call all people to be fully devoted followers of Christ.

Vision: To be an authentic community of Christ-followers, relentless in helping each other experience intimacy with God. Remember who you were, who rescued you and who you are in Christ… Titus 3:3-7, “For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of re:generation and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” Follow God’s purpose for you… Isaiah 61:1-4, “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to grant to those who mourn in Zion—to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit;that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified. They shall build up the ancient ruins; they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations.”

SESSION ONE // MISSION & VISION

Why Discipleship Through Recovery

• Everyone who comes to recovery has realized that something inside is broken that he or she cannot fix.

• God is recovering lost, sinful humanity to himself through Christ and transforming us into the image of Christ by the Spirit (sanctification).

• The 12 steps of re:generation outline the biblical sanctification process for the

Christian.

• The Body of Christ should be the place of healing for hurting people in a broken world. A truthful, safe, loving Christ-centered community is critical for the health of individuals, the Church and society.

SESSION ONE // MISSION & VISION

Keys to a Successful Ministry

The Sovereignty of God:

• God transforms lives through His Spirit, His word and His people – not a successful “program.”

• Prayer transforms lives by the intercession of the saints through the power of Holy Spirit.

• Our goal is the glory of God. Intimacy with Christ is freedom:

• “Sobriety” is not the end-game. Full-devotion to Christ alone brings freedom. • Heart transformation is infinitely more important than behavior modification.

Intimacy with Christ facilitates responding to God out of love and gratitude, not just responding to Him in obedience.

• Community with the Body of Christ is essential to an authentic pursuit of God. Church leadership support:

• There must be up-front authenticity and ministry support from church leadership.

• Church staff involvement in the ministry is important. There must be up-front teaching and participation within the ministry from staff.

• A willingness to make re:generation a front-door ministry.

SESSION TWO // DISTINCTIVES

Objectives

A Kingdom of Priests Dependent on Jesus

• Disciple-makers, a kingdom of priests (Isaiah 61:3-7, 1 Peter 2:5-10, Matthew 28:19)

• Fully equipped by the Holy Spirit and through God’s Word (Acts 1:8, 2 Timothy 3:16-17)

• Ministry leadership team equips others for ministry (Ephesians 4:11-13)

• Direct people to Christ: we aren’t perfect. Curriculum isn’t perfect. Training isn’t

perfect. But Jesus is, and He entrusts us to partner, even in our failure and inadequacy (Matthew 14:13-21; John 21:15-19; 1 Corinthians 11:1)

SESSION TWO // DISTINCTIVES

Leadership Culture

Authenticity

• Leaders live-out honesty, confession, and sharing our recovery stories, past and present.

Confidence in God • You are not their Savior; direct them to the One who heals.

Our Inadequacy & Imperfection • It’s okay to feel in over your head. Go to Him for what you do not have. • You will fail. Model humility by asking for forgiveness from your group. • You will face ambiguity and frustration as God works. Trust Him.

Love • What is the most loving thing to do – in the moment and long term? • Sometimes the most loving thing to do is to let someone walk away.

SESSION TWO // DISTINCTIVES

How is re:generation Different?

1. Discipleship focus: Full devotion to Christ is our mission. Heart change is more

important than behavior modification. “Sobriety” from addiction is not ultimate, it is fruit of our abiding with Christ.

2. The steps of re:generation are rewritten to facilitate biblical sanctification.

3. Daily lessons: Freedom is a product of abiding with Christ. Re:gen provides daily structure to grow in a relationship with God.

4. Scripture memory, daily prayer and community are integrated as critical means of recovery.

5. Curriculum uniquely designed to share the gospel, identify idols, facilitate repentance, clarify forgiveness/amends/reconciliation and deal with abuse.

Page 17: CLC17 ReGen Workshop Booklet - Amazon S3 · re:generation is Christ-centered discipleship through recovery. We all experience broken ness in life. At re:generation, we believe that

17 CHURCH LEADERS CONFERENCE // // re:generation WORKBOOK

SESSION TWO // DISTINCTIVES

6. Mixed-issue groups: Sinful patterns are symptoms of a worship issue (idolatry). Mixed-issue groups help focus recovery on the heart rather than on behavior and help expose the lie of terminal uniqueness.

7. Integration/participation in the Church: isolating from/within the Church is unhealthy. We encourage participants to be in community, integrate into church, find mentors, become a member and serve at their church home.

8. Living in the light: We confess sin, speak truth in love, walk in repentance,

guard against gossip and handle conflict biblically (Mt. 18:15-17). Anonymity

and confidentiality are not supported by scripture. Groups are safe environments to share, but are not safe harbors for unrepentant sin.

9. Continuous one-night ministry model: Participants join the ministry on any given week. One-night model allows for interaction of participants at different stages of ministry, increased leadership recruitment, improved leader development and cross-training, ministry training.

10. Classroom and real-time leadership training: leader training at launch, weekly

videos and leader guide for every week of curriculum and inventory training.

SESSION 3 // DISCIPLESHIP & SANCTIFICATION

Steps 4-6: Dying to Sinful Nature

Step 4, Inventory: We make a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves. Identify Sinful Nature

• Understand God’s Standard • Recognize sin, sin patterns and idols • Psalm 51:6

Step 5, Confess: We confess to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our sins. Confession

• Agree with God about sin and its harm • Live in the light • 1 John 1:7-9

Step 6, Repent: We become entirely ready to turn away from our patterns of sin and turn to God. Repentance

• Turn from sin to face Christ • Change of heart/mind leads to change in daily living • 2 Timothy 2:22

Page 22: CLC17 ReGen Workshop Booklet - Amazon S3 · re:generation is Christ-centered discipleship through recovery. We all experience broken ness in life. At re:generation, we believe that

22 CHURCH LEADERS CONFERENCE // // re:generation WORKBOOK

SESSION 3 // DISCIPLESHIP & SANCTIFICATION

Steps 7-9: Follow Christ, Love Others

Step 7, Follow: We humbly ask God’s Spirit to change our hearts and minds in order to follow Christ fully. Walk by the Spirit to Follow Christ

• Holy Spirit, Trinity • New identity in Christ • Galatians 5:22-25

Step 8, Forgive: We forgive those who have harmed us and become willing to make amends to those we have harmed. Forgiveness

• Understand forgiveness • Transfer debts we are owed to God • Ephesians 4:32-5:1

Step 9, Amends: We make direct amends whenever possible, submitting to God, his Word and biblical counsel. Make Amends

SESSION 3 // DISCIPLESHIP & SANCTIFICATION

Steps 10-12: Daily Discipline, Intimacy with God, The Great Commission

Step 10, Continue: We continue to examine out lives, and when we sin promptly confess and turn to walk with Christ.

Daily discipline of recovery

• Guard heart from sin • Keep short accounts with God/others • Psalm 139:23-24

Step 11, Intimacy: We seek to deepen our relationship with God daily and depend on his power to do his will. Intimacy with God brings freedom

• Spiritual disciplines to grow in Christ • How I am created by God for worship • John 17:3

Step 12, Regenerate: Because of our new lives in Christ, we carry God’s message of reconciliation to others and practice these principles in every aspect of our lives.

Make disciples

• Knowing and sharing the gospel • Reconciliation • Biblical conflict resolution • 2 Corinthians 5:17-18

RESOURCES // LEADER GUIDE STEP: 1

Welcome to re:generation Leadership! New Leader Welcome Video Thank you for partnering with Christ, to make disciples through your group, and help men and women know Jesus and be transformed to be more like him. To come alongside you as you lead, two resources will help you prepare for each weekly meeting:

• Weekly Leader Video: Watch online or download as a podcast a 3-5 minute overview of the lesson, important things to remember, possible questions to focus on, and encouragement for the participants and for you.

• Weekly Leader Guide: The same content as the video, but in written form, is in this book. Read and pray through to get prepared, and bring it your group meeting.

You may be experiencing a mix of emotions – excitement, nervousness, being overwhelmed, anticipation, etc. These are natural and can point you to remember the most important thing: God alone heals – it’s not up to you. This frees you from taking on only what God can do, and helps you depend on him alone for the change he desires to make in others’ lives. Throughout your journey with your group, the best things you can do consistently are:

• Pray for the participants, your co-leader, yourself and the ministry. • Direct people to Christ through the use of God’s word. • Be faithful yourself by living out the biblical principles of re:generation openly and honestly in

front of your group. Remember, God wants to involve you in the work he is doing in lives. God will give the faithful everything they need. “For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward him...” 2 Chronicles 16:9

Step Group Launch Goals for first meeting together: • Build trust. • Set expectations. • Exchange information: give instructions and receive participant information. Step Group Launch Video To access the training videos from the re:generation website at www.regenerationrecovery.org/resources/

• Select Resources on the menu bar and then select Leaders from the list. • Username: leaders (plural, all lowercase) • Password: newlife (no space, all lowercase)

Note:

• If a coach is launching the group with two co-leaders, plan out who will facilitate different parts of the agenda, as to share as a team. This will allow all to share and start to connect with the participants, rather than only the coach.

• For example, one co-leader could open in prayer, facilitate participants getting to know each other, the coach could share about expectation and the guidelines, and the other co-leader could share the assignment for next week, explain the prayer cards and close in prayer.

Agenda Prepare for group

• Place Participant Information sheets and Prayer Cards on each chair. • Write the leaders’ contact information on the board.

Welcome everyone as they arrive

• If they don’t have a name tag, give them a name tag. • Ask all the group members to complete the Participant Information sheets.

Open with prayer

Introduction of coach and leaders

• Each person share “My name is _________, and I have a new life in Christ, and am recovering from ______, ______, ________.”

• Explain what “a new life in Christ” means: my identity is in Christ not in my struggle. Jesus’ life death and resurrection has given me a new life: of being a forgiven, pure and accepted child of God through Christ. We will share more about this as time goes on.

• Explain role of a coach as part of the team. Share the purpose of this meeting:

• Start to get to know each other. • Share expectations. • Exchange information and give instructions for next week.

Coach or Co-leaders share recovery story (5 minutes maximum)

• If a coach is launching, coach shares first week, then co-leaders the second and third meeting. Write it out in bullet points if you will be tempted to ramble or go longer than 5 minutes.

o What brought me to recovery § Struggles (keep to 3) § Effect on my relationship with God, people in my life, circumstances

o What was significant during recovery § What was helpful: steps, the process of being in the group, what God taught you

about himself and you? § What was challenging?

o Life after recovery § How has your relationship with God and with people changed?

Expectations of life change • We are changed by God. Rather than the curriculum being the key, freedom, peace and joy in

life come from God alone by relying upon him daily to live by his instruction for life. o “…for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.”

Philippians 2:13 • Focus on recovery for this season.

o Let the next 9-10 months be a season of focus and make space for God to work in your life.

o Give God 30 minutes a day to focus on recovery for your lessons. View this one day, one week at a time.

o With time and relationships, make space in your heart and calendar: § Don’t look to begin new dating relationships during this season of recovery. § Limit study to this curriculum to allow time for homework and reflection.

• Be honest about where you are with God and in recovery. God works in our reality and honesty with him and others.

o Encourage them: choose to be as honest as you can be beginning tonight. Don’t hold back on what you are truly struggling with. It will be harder to be honest later as time goes on.

• There is hope with God! He loves you and is committed to you.

Expectations from re:generation Leadership • Leaders are not licensed counselors but people who have been and are being transformed

by Jesus. We will counsel with God’s word because he alone has the wisdom we need to know him and to change.

• The leaders will: o Pray for you. o Authentically live out our recovery with you. o Seek to create an environment that is safe and builds trust with one another. o Respect your time by beginning and ending on time (8:30 pm).

• Leaders are part of a larger team supported by the coach and ministry leadership. We will not gossip, but there are no secrets in re:generation leadership. If needed, we will seek counsel and pray to love you and walk alongside you.

Expectations from each individual • Consistent group attendance

o Important for you and because it affects the group when you’re absent. Your attendance encourages the rest of the group so come even when you don’t want to come for yourself.

o You are building trust with others and they are building trust with you. o Consistent attendance is needed to remain in the group. o Contact your leader if you will not be attending.

• Attending large group worship, testimony/teaching time. • Homework completed before the meeting

o Daily curriculum includes 5 days of homework, one day of review, and one day of rest.

o The time during the week with God is the most important time. The daily curriculum is a tool to help you work on your recovery every day and allow God to work in your life.

o Completing each book is required to progress to the next book or step. • Participating in the group

o The purpose of the group time is to share what is happening in your life from the past week: what God is showing you through the homework, what you are struggling with, or any victories.

o Active sharing of what you are learning, questions, etc. will help both you and others in the group to grow and learn.

• Keeping the Group Discussion Guidelines o Guidelines will help the group to build trust, share about ourselves, and learn to listen

and not fix one another. o Refer to the Group Discussion Guidelines page and read aloud the paragraph and

guidelines: § ABC (About Self, Be Brief, Keep it Clean) § GAG (Guard Against Gossip)

o Focus on the purpose and heart of these rather than following rules. Explain that as time goes on and the group builds trust, these will change.

Participant introductions

• Ask each person to briefly share 3 things: o Name o Top 3 struggles o What they hope to get out of the next 9-10 months in re:generation

• Take attendance on the roster as people share. Note any information about each participant (family, struggle, etc.) on the roster you want to remember.

Give instructions for this week’s homework

• Homework this week is to complete Step 1, Week 1. This includes five days of homework, one day of review and reflection, and one day of rest (Sabbath).

• Next week, be ready to discuss questions on Week1, Day 6, which is a summary of what you learned from the homework on Days 1-5.

Exchange Prayer Cards • Explain prayer cards to the group. Each week write out a prayer request along with your contact

information (email or phone number). • Encourage them to email or call the other group member during the week to let them know that

they are praying for them. • Ask them to turn to the person next to them and exchange their card this week. (Next week, as

people start to know one another's names, they can be put in the middle of the circle and picked up.)

Collect Participant Information sheets Close in prayer

After the Group

• Debrief about how the evening went. • Decide which leader will share their story the following week for 5 minutes. • Review Participant Information sheets together.

o See who in the group might not be a believer and take note on the roster, and begin praying for these people. Steps 1-3 will be sharing the gospel with the participants and a chance to talk with them further. Leave the welcome cards in the folder.

o Over the next few weeks, make contact with those who aren’t sure of their relationship with Christ – by phone, after group, etc. This is a great opportunity to connect more personally and be able to encourage them and answer questions.

• Email and call any of the participants who did not show up tonight to let them know they were missed and what to prepare for next week.

• Praise God for his grace and work already happening in the participants’ lives that brought them to this place!

RESOURCES // LEADER GUIDE: STEP 1

Step 1, Week 1 Step 1, ADMIT: We admit we are powerless over our addictions, brokenness and sinful patterns – that in our own power our lives are unmanageable. Foundation 1: “For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out.” (Romans 7:18) Key Theme: Realize your need for help. Remember: There is hope for you – even in your brokenness – because God loves you, and the Bible has a plan for your healing. Step 1, Week 1 Video Note:

• If a coach is launching the group with two co-leaders, plan out who will do lead different parts of the agenda, as to share as a team. For example, one co-leader could open in prayer, facilitate participants getting to know each other, and the other co-leader could share the assignment for next week, distribute prayer cards and close in prayer.

Things to Remember

• The daily curriculum for the steps requires more time than Groundwork. Check to see how they are doing. Remind them to work on recovery daily. Each day’s work is an opportunity to connect with God.

• People may be struggling daily with addiction. Be patient with them. Pray for them. • You are still working to establish trust. Continue to live authentically yourself to build trust by

sharing your answers and what God is showing you. • Confess, confess, confess. Be vulnerable and open with your own life and current recovery (not

only of the past, but of today). • You will not have time to go through all of the questions for each day for each participant. Pick a

few focus questions for the group time. Agenda Attendance - Take attendance as participants arrive. Begin the Group

• Welcome everyone and open with prayer. • If you haven’t already, co-leader shares 5-minute recovery mini testimony. You can do this either

at beginning or at the end of the meeting. Group Discussion

RESOURCES // LEADER GUIDE STEP: 1

• Remind the group of the Group Discussion Guidelines and the purpose behind them: to build trust, to honestly share and to learn to listen without fixing others.

• Give an overview of Step 1, ADMIT. o Asking the group to turn to the first page of the Step 1, and for someone to read out loud

Step 1 and Foundation 1 (Romans 7:18). o Share the Key Theme of this week: Realize your need for help. o This week helps us remember to:

§ Admit we are powerless to manage sin. § Realize there is hope – even in brokenness – because God loves you, and the

Bible has a plan for your healing. § Come out of hiding and accept help. Encourage them that they have begun

this step by being here tonight. o Point out The Extra Mile Memory Verse in the side bar (1 John 1:8). Share that we will

be focusing on memorizing the Foundation Verses, but if they could increase their knowledge of God’s word by going the extra mile and applying both verse to their lives.

• Check with the group how it went doing the daily lessons. • Focus discussion on questions from Day 6, which are designed to bring out what God is using

in the lives of each participant. o Remind them to keep sharing brief so all can share who want to share. Participants can

share randomly or go around the circle and allow people to pass. o As you are doing the homework, ask God what specific ones to ask the group. Possible

other questions to focus on: § Day 3, Question 6: Why did you come to re:generation? Describe the tipping

point, or “bottom,” that brought you to recovery. § Day 2, Question 4: When you were growing up, did your family have hidden

secrets? If so, what were they? How did your family try to hide secrets? o Have participants turn to Appendix C on page 111. These supplemental lessons are for

anyone who may be dealing with the pain of abuse. Encourage any of your participants to complete these additional questions after they have completed the entire step. The abuse lessons are a complement to the step lesson, not a substitute for them. There are supplemental lessons for each of the 12 steps.

Encourage the Participants

• Give God a year to transform your heart and life. Start by simply giving God 30 minutes a day to connect with him while you work on your lesson.

• Follow-up with one another this week with your prayer cards. This is a way to provide needed encouragement and support through prayer.

Close in prayer

RESOURCES // LEADER GUIDE: STEP 1

After the Group

• Discuss the group dynamics in general. o Are people trying to get to know each other? o Did people have work completed before the meeting? o Who seems quiet or disengaged? If this continues next week, connect with them after

the meeting to check in with how they are doing, wanting make sure they know how valuable it is to hear from them too.

o Did anyone talk about any abuse? If so and this seems to be the biggest presenting concern, plan to connect with them privately. This is an ongoing area to be on the lookout for in your group so you can shepherd them well.

• Decide who will do what for next week’s agenda. Encouragement to Leader

• Set the tone with your own confession and honesty; vulnerability breeds vulnerability. Confess, confess, confess! This creates the tone that you have not arrived and are in recovery alongside them.

• Remember: God is the one who changes people – it’s not up to you. • Pray for your group members individually by name. • Lead your group by example. How are you doing with spending time doing the devotionals and

engaging with God?

PREPARE YOUR HEART 1. Search your heart and your motives ! Ensure this is the direction God intends for your church ! Read Psalm 127:1, Proverbs 14:15 ! Record or journal anything God reveals to you

2. Consider the counsel of those around you ! Assemble a small team of advisors who are willing to review your direction and

provide you honest feedback ! Ensure the collective counsel of this team supports this direction ! Read Proverbs 12:15

3. Spend a season in prayer ! Ask God to reveal anything about you that may hinder the mission (hidden sin,

gifting, capacity, spousal support) ! Read Psalm 139:23-24

Page 78: CLC17 ReGen Workshop Booklet - Amazon S3 · re:generation is Christ-centered discipleship through recovery. We all experience broken ness in life. At re:generation, we believe that

78 CHURCH LEADERS CONFERENCE // // re:generation WORKBOOK

RESOURCES // MINISTRY LAUNCH GUIDE

OBTAIN CHURCH LEADERSHIP BUY-IN 1. Align with your church’s mission and culture ! Share the ways in which re:generation will support the mission

• For example, if your church is focused on making disciples, highlight the discipleship aspect of re:generation.

! Assess your church culture and evaluate re:generation fit; churches where re:generation is thriving share one or more of these characteristics: • There is a vision for the Body of Christ to be a place of healing for church

members and the community. • Values like authenticity, healing, grace, honesty and sincerity define the

culture. • There is a commitment to being intentionally involved with others in

accountable, encouraging relationships, believing that life-change happens best in the context of relationships.

• There is an intentional effort to equip saints (lay leaders) and deploy them in the work of the Church.

2. Identify how re:generation will affect other church ministries ! Reduces staff burnout as it creates a clear path for counseling those struggling

with sin ! Church counselors might see fewer “cases” as God heals and strengthens

people in re:generation ! Clearly state what is the ask of staff time ! Share the likely source of re:generation leaders ! Think through all the other staff and ministries who could potentially be affected,

and communicate, communicate, communicate the impact ! Decide who is in charge of re:generation from a staff perspective, but where

re:generation reports is less important than the passion of the person supporting it

! Identify someone on staff who can help with administrative aspects of the program

! Evaluate budget needs and considerations

Page 79: CLC17 ReGen Workshop Booklet - Amazon S3 · re:generation is Christ-centered discipleship through recovery. We all experience broken ness in life. At re:generation, we believe that

m79 CHURCH LEADERS CONFERENCE // // re:generation WORKBOOK

RESOURCES // MINISTRY LAUNCH GUIDE

3. Share the logistics of your plan ! Select a night of the week

• Where might re:generation fit in your normal church rhythm? • Are there nights when childcare is already available?

! Facility needs • Identify a Large Group room and breakout rooms for Groundwork/Step

Groups. • If enough breakout rooms are not available, figure out a way to subdivide the

Large Group room; while this is not ideal (at times, small groups can be emotional / loud and could disrupt other groups) it can work!

! Child care needs • Consider whether childcare is necessary to launch. Offering some form of

childcare opens the door for more leaders and participants to be involved. • Some churches begin with full childcare, some begin with no childcare, some

charge for childcare. ! Year-round model

• Our goal is to provide an environment where a person struggling can show up at any time, participate in a Groundwork Group, and then be placed in a Step Group in a reasonable period of time. This goal requires development towards a ministry that meets year-round. On holidays, Groundwork groups are offered (holidays are often a time of struggle) but Step Groups may not meet. This approach will maximize the benefits of re:generation because it provides a full-time on-ramp to discipleship through recovery. The typical participant commitment is about 1 year from newcomer to commencement if participants are able to move through the ministry at a normal pace. There is one week for Newcomers, 6 weeks of Groundwork curriculum and about 8½ months of Step Group curriculum. Step Group leaders may take a week to celebrate the completion of each book, break for holidays and extend some lessons if needed.

• At early stages of ministry development newcomers may join Groundwork immediately. Also, Step Groups may launch at specified times of the year when leaders are available, but the ministry should do its best to provide Groundwork groups for participants to attend weekly until a Step Group is ready to launch.

• Note: In either approach, it is not recommended to add a new person to a Step Group that has already launched and progressing through the steps.

Page 80: CLC17 ReGen Workshop Booklet - Amazon S3 · re:generation is Christ-centered discipleship through recovery. We all experience broken ness in life. At re:generation, we believe that

80 CHURCH LEADERS CONFERENCE // // re:generation WORKBOOK

RESOURCES // MINISTRY LAUNCH GUIDE

! Worship time or not • Worship is always a fantastic way to prepare our hearts for God to speak to

us, so worship is a way to enhance re:generation but it is not a mandatory piece of the experience. If you do not have the resources to have quality worship it is OK to wait until you do. If you think it might be a challenge to recruit and organize the musicians for a weekly meeting, consider a less-than-weekly cadence.

4. Expose leadership to re:generation ! Share the regenerationrecovery.org video testimonies ! Hold reference calls with other re:generation churches ! Take a site visit to a re:generation church

5. Get church leadership buy-in! ! Formally request their blessing ! Apply to become a re:generation church at regenerationrecovery.org

• Fill out the online interest form (https://www.formstack.com/forms/watermark-churchinterestform)

• Sign and return the Host Church And Trademark And Copyright License Agreement (please note: churches unable to sign due to doctrinal differences will not be able to move forward with re:generation)

• Texas churches must provide a copy of their Sales Tax Exemption form

RUN A PILOT 1. Set your goals for the pilot ! Understand the curriculum ! Allow leaders to practice authenticity (leaders must be honest about their own

struggles!) ! Rehearse Large Group teaching and testimonies, which includes establishing a

feedback loop to improve them ! Even in a pilot group, your goal is to disciple one another, not just train for

ministry

2. Define the pilot format ! Select the Standard, Accelerated or Mixed approach

• The Standard approach takes the normal re:generation cadence of one lesson per week. The advantage of this approach is that leaders will experience the same rhythm as the live class and will maximize their learning (soaker hose vs. sprinkler).

• The Accelerated approach shortens the pilot group time by condensing the Groundwork curriculum to be completed in three weeks and launching participant groups after the pilot group has finished Step 6 (note: this also requires that pilot group leaders are willing to complete Steps 7-12 with the pilot group while also launching and facilitating a participant group). This can be used if you have an aggressive launch date and need to work through the pilot quickly. It is also most successful when the people involved are healthy spiritually and have capacity. Because of the rigor of the curriculum we do not recommend condensing the Step Group curriculum or launching the ministry prior to completion of Step 6 for the pilot group.

• The Mixed Approach allows for pilot groups to include a few participants in the pilot with potential leaders. However, someone must be identified as the point person to handle issues that arise with participants in these groups.

! Set the meeting time then refine as needed • The biggest request from leaders is that they need more small group time so

build your schedule to allow at least 1:15. • It is important that Leader Meetings are held, but find a time that works well

for you. While the most consistent leader attendance occurs when you hold the meeting on the same night as re:generation, other options work also.

82 CHURCH LEADERS CONFERENCE // // re:generation WORKBOOK

RESOURCES // MINISTRY LAUNCH GUIDE

Some churches hold a Leader Meeting on a different night, usually because their leaders cannot arrive before Large Group time due to their commutes. Others have opted to have a Leader Meeting every other week.

• Sample meeting schedule:

! Plan leader meetings • The Leader Meeting is a critical time. Invest heavily in your leaders and really

encourage them! The meeting can serve as a nice halftime between a busy workday and a potentially stressful re:generation small group.

• During the pilot, spend time preparing your leaders to facilitate a small group. Have leaders take turns facilitating the pilot group.

• Constantly reinforce with your leaders the need to have a scriptural basis for any instruction they provide to participants, otherwise the participants will develop an unhealthy dependence on your leaders rather than on God.

• After launch, Leader Meetings usually bounce between a light teaching (recurring topic with re:generation groups) and “table time” where the leaders discuss what is happening in their small groups and solicit ideas from their peers.

• Depending on your meeting time, consider whether a meal should be served. It may serve your leaders well and lead to more consistent attendance! Some churches ask leaders for a nominal contribution to help offset the meal cost while others absorb that cost.

! Plan Large Group time • Large Group time should be a healthy mix between testimony and teaching.

Testimonies are critical so at least 50% of the meetings should have a testimony.

• It is important that you challenge your leaders to share their testimony. The pilot is a perfect time to start this process. It also makes a significant impact when church leaders share their story. In fact, if church leaders are unwilling to share their story you should question leadership’s buy-in to re:generation.

• Having enough leaders available to do testimonies can be a big challenge when first launching re:generation. As quickly as possible develop a list of people that will share, starting with your church leaders and re:generation leaders. Supplement with video or audio testimonies during your pilot and launch. As you finish your first set of closed groups, identify graduate people to add to the list.

• Guidelines for helping people prepare their testimony are available at http://www.regenerationrecovery.org/resources/leaders/.

• Videos of the 12 Step teaching can be found http://www.regenerationrecovery.org/resources/12-step-teaching-and-stories/.

! Establish Step Group size • The optimal ratio is one leader to 7 or 8 participants. When possible we

recommend assigning co-leaders to a group (up to 15 participants). Co-leaders provide relief, support and wisdom to each another as they facilitate groups. Having co-leaders of groups also provides a safety net should a leader be unable to complete the steps with a group.

• There is often attrition with step groups. It is not unusual to complete a Step Group with a ratio of one leader to five participants (or start a co-led group with 15 participants and end with 10). A group that starts with a participants-to-leader ratio of less than 5 runs the risk of being too small if anyone drops out. It is best to have a quorum present which can be a challenge in smaller groups during vacation seasons or other heavy travel seasons.

3. Build a leadership team ! Define a leader selection process, which contains elements such as your criteria

for leadership. For a sample of a leadership application go to http://watermark.formstack.com/forms/regenleaderapplication

! It is best to hand-pick individuals to participate in the pilot; typically these are people you expect to lead in re:generation

! Once you’ve selected your pilot group, order curriculum at least three weeks ahead of your pilot start date

! Throughout the pilot, assemble a list of others who can lead ! Send the leaders to a church already doing re:generation to see it in action ! Check with Watermark to see if there are any upcoming training conferences ! Prior to launch, ensure each leader has completed all the New Leader Training

Guide found at http://www.regenerationrecovery.org/resources/leaders/. Be sure

to have leaders use the Step Leader Guides and Weekly Training Videos for the steps also available on this webpage. Continue to use these resources with new leaders who are added in the future. For access to the leader resources page use username=leaders, password=newlife

4. Prepare a communication plan for launch ! Determine if you will be doing a soft launch or a hard launch.

• A hard launch would involve broadly publicizing re:generation using the techniques below. This usually works best with ministries who are transitioning existing recovery ministries and have enough leaders to manage a spike in the number of participants.

• If you have concerns about not having enough leaders to handle an influx of participants from widespread communication, a soft launch may be preferable where you spread the word organically. This usually works best for new recovery ministries where church referrals and word of mouth become the primary means of advertising. A hard marketing strategy can come at a later date when a strong leadership team is established.

! Start feeding stories to the church through available outlets (pulpit, bulletin, web, staff meeting) to generate awareness

! Communicate to church staff when/how/why they should refer people re:generation

! Partner with church leadership to find the best way to announce re:generation. For example, have a sermon series leading up to the launch or perhaps Sunday testimonies.

! Build assets such as print pieces and video ! Consider using your church website or using regenerationrecovery.org to direct

people to your ministry

LAUNCH! 1. Plan administrative support ! Determine what fee (if any) you will charge participants

• The cost of the workbooks is usually passed to the participants. As a general guide, Watermark’s current participant cost is $5 for Groundwork books and $10 for each step book ($45 total).

• There are several options for handling Childcare cost. One option is work a small fee into the cost of books so that cost is distributed throughout all participants. This makes bookkeeping easier and may bless some people struggling with resources. You can also charge only childcare users for the service, or you can decide to absorb the cost, or even pass the plate.

• Often fees do not cover the entire cost of the program so you must decide how much your church will underwrite. For example, churches typically do not charge re:generation leaders for childcare.

! Forecast the number of potential attendees and order workbooks 3 weeks prior to launch date

! Define a method for tracking incoming participants. This is very important to help you form Step Groups.

! Build a process for assembling new Step Groups • Start by deciding the factors you will use to place people into a group.

Completion of the Groundwork curriculum and consistent Groundwork attendance are basic indicators that someone is ready to work through the Step Group Curriculum.

• Assign leaders to the group. You may also assign a coach to the group. • Secure a breakout room. • Notify the new group that they have been assigned to a Step Group, who their

leaders are, where they should meet, and to purchase the curriculum for Steps 1-3.

2. Assign host roles ! Assign greeters to direct people to the Large Group gathering, warmly welcome

them upon arrival and encourage them to fill out a name tag (this is also a way to get participants involved in serving)

! Place signs at strategic locations to direct folks to Large Group ! Provide snacks, water or coffee to participants as they enter Large Group ! Provide info cards for Newcomers

! Provide sign-in sheets for Groundwork Groups ! Let the leaders take ownership for weekly operational responsibilities. Empower

leaders to develop teams and give away the ministry. Serving is a privilege!

3. Script out the first few weeks ! If using the year-round model, start-up should look something like this:

• In week 1, hold a normal Large Group then all participants go to Newcomers. When participants go to share in groups, split men and women into separate groups. Have newcomers fill out basic information cards so that you know when they began recovery and can follow-up with them during the week.

• In week 2, all week 1 participants go into Groundwork Groups. Split men and women into different groups (separate rooms are ideal). Do not split by struggle or symptom.

• Use your leaders from the pilot to lead Groundwork Groups. • Groundwork Groups can have up to 20 people. Take attendance each week

and track it. You will need this information to make decisions as you form groups.

• No Step Groups until six weeks of Groundwork curriculum is completed and consistent attendance is measured; this allows you to (a) get familiar and build trust with participants before forming Step Groups and (b) know who is committed to attending.

4. Supplement live teaching and testimony as needed ! Use audio from the Watermark re:generation recovery channel ! Use video and audio testimony/teachings from regenerationrecovery.org

5. Continually build into and recruit leaders ! The long-term success of re:generation rises and falls on healthy leadership so

constantly be looking for good leaders • Many of your best leaders will come from people who have recovery

experience already, although it is not a requirement for leaders to have formal recovery experience.

• Ask current leaders to look for people in their group that might be future leaders. If leaders must miss a meeting, have that potential future leader take ownership of that meeting.

• Involve spiritually mature Christians in your church—especially those who have a story of God working though a hardship or sin struggle in their lives. Established church leaders can make great recovery leaders even if they have not gone through a recovery program.

! If you identify someone who you are not 100% confident is ready to lead a Step Group consider assigning them as a co-leader with someone more spiritually mature who has experience in either a Groundwork Group or Step Group setting.

! Begin to look within your church for people who can mentor. Participants need to seek mentors from people already in their lives, who will be in their lives after recovery. However, some participants come to re:generation without knowing any Christians. Mentorship is a way for mature believers in your church to be involved as God transforms a life through recovery. Mentor training is recommended for all mentors regardless of their recovery experience.

! Identify leaders of leaders • For the leaders that have taken a true ownership mentality with re:generation,

establish them as coaches for sets of leaders. • Coaches and their leaders can sit together at Leader Meetings.

! While you certainly want re:generation leaders to return and lead, encourage them to take some time off and recharge to avoid burn-out

ENCOURAGEMENT AND REMINDERS

• Read Proverbs 16:9 and 1 Corinthians 3:7. While it is important to do your best to plan for the ministry, God is the One who will direct your steps. God is also the one who causes the growth. Therefore, your best strategy is to pray for God’s wisdom and guidance. Pray for Him to bring the right leaders and participants at the right time. Pray for God to heal and bring people to full devotion to Christ despite personal and ministry shortcomings.

• Ministry success is not measured by the number people who attend re:generation. Success is measured in the depth of surrender and devotion to Christ of those willing to live out the ministry of reconciliation in every area of life upon completion of re:generation. 2 Corinthians 5:17-18

• Because of re:generation’s curriculum rigor you will see attrition with participants from Newcomers through Groundwork. This is good attrition. If people are not ready to spend 10 minutes a day working on their relationship with God and on their recovery, they are not ready to recover. The curriculum is not meant to overwhelm, but rather give people an opportunity to connect with God to work on their recovery daily. Daily intimacy with God is what brings freedom. Matthew 6:11

• You will also see attrition in Step Groups (even with leaders), particularly between Step 4, Inventory and Step 6, Repent. This attrition is normal and healthy. If people are not ready to explore their sinful nature, open their lives up to others or take steps to turn from sinful patterns, they may have not yet decided to surrender their life and will to God (Step 3, Trust). Help people find where they are stuck in Steps 1-3 and encourage them to spend the time that they need with their mentors (apart from the group) to work on these steps. Proverbs 3:5-6

• Rely solely on God’s Word when counseling people through hardship. God knows better than the smartest of men. He has equipped you to counsel by providing His Word and The Holy Spirit. 2 Timothy 3:16-17

• Remember what God has done for you and who you have become through Christ. Christ working through The Church is God’s plan for healing the world. Titus 3:3-7 and Isaiah 61:1-4

• This ministry is not about you. Your mission is to glorify God by being fully devoted to Christ and making disciples who are committed to following Christ in all areas of life. 2 Corinthians 4:5-6 and Matthew 28:19-20

• You are not alone. Ask for help from re:generation ministry leadership when you get stuck or have questions. We are one body in Christ our Lord. Ephesians 4:4-5
