COMMITTEE NEWS COMMITTEE MEETING 29

th OCTOBER 2007

18 members were present at the meeting at the Peel Park Hotel, Accrington. The main points of our discussions were:

· FRA English Championships. Alan Brentall, FRA Secretary had replied to inform us that our request for a Lady Veterans’ Team Award had been forwarded to the Championship Committee. Alan thought that the request might be too late for the 2008 Championship. We decided to bring the matter up at the FRA AGM to see if it could go ahead in 2008.

· New members aged 18-20, or in full-time education are to pay the full subscription, but will receive a free Club vest.

· Car Stickers with the ‘new’ Club logo are to be ordered. We will consider updating the logo on the medals at a later date.

· Presentation Evening: As reported at the last meeting, ticket sales are going well. We need all trophies to be returned to Harry Manning (via a member of the Committee) as soon as possible. We intend to present a limited number of special awards to recognise members’ personal achievements that are not covered by the current medal categories.

· Cross Country: The Palladium Points Competition is to be decided over the cross-country season, rather than the calendar year. This means that the Awards for the 2007-08 season will be awarded at the 2009 Presentation Evening. Following the discovery of the old Cross-Country Handicap Trophy, Paul undertook to revive the Club Cross-Country Handicap Race at the end of the cross-country season.

· Flora London Marathon: Peter had requested the Club’s entitlement. NB: We have received 5 Club entries – see elsewhere in the newsletter for application details.

· Club Championship 2008: Garry, Peter Thompson, Katy, Ian & myself are to meet before the December Meeting to decide the format of the 2008 Championship.

· Committee Meetings are to be held on the first Monday of each month to bring the Meetings into line with publication of the Newsletter. We aim to reduce the length of time between the publication of the on-line and printed versions of the Newsletter.

· 3 Peaks Race 2008: Wendy Dodds had confirmed that the 3 Peaks Committee expected the Club to be responsible for flagging and marshalling a section of the course.

· Senior Men’s Fell Captain: Alex Cran & Kieron Mitchell have volunteered to take over as Captain, when Neil attains Veteran status (!) in March.

LETTERS

LETTER Run of the Month This HAS to be Candice Leah for her performance at Gt Whernside. Not only was this a British and English championships but she set a new record. Can anyone remember when any Clayton runner last won a British championship race? I could probably guess when someone last won an English championship race and it was a long time ago. Having nominated Candice for a third place, then second place in earlier English championship events, I can only accept a world title (non veteran) as being a performance that is more worthy! Wendy Dodds LETTER Rapidly running up to 60 or Menial musings from a V59er From the results list kept on the computer at Fuschl am See, I have now ascertained that my 2006 completion of the local 11.8km lakeside run over stick and stone took no less than 69 minutes and 56 seconds. A disgrace, I hear you mutter, and you'd be quite right . The scales don't lie. I was quite a heavyweight then - weighed in at 85 kilo. Rapidly approaching 60, can I now turn back the clock? That is the challenge. The first challenge anyway, on the road to actually winning something. And if I don't make it onto the podium in 2008 I'll have to wait another 10 years, for 70 will be the next window of opportunity! So 2007 is a vital year. It's the year of preparation. A year of getting some consistent training under the belt whilst at the same time pulling it in a good few notches. With 6 months to go to the big birthday the 2007 Fuschlsee Race (August 19th) comes at the ideal time. I'll be able to see if the training is going to plan. The bathroom scales, dragged cobwebbed from a forgotten corner bring news: 5 kilo has disappeared. That's about double the weight that a racehorse is penalised after a win. Albert, 40, a local grocer and a sub-60 minute man, has already run over the course 50 times this year, but nevertheless he 'volunteers' to prepare me for the big day. Curiously Albert sneaks-off in the night prior to our last run: "Gone to a motor-cycle event in the Czech Republic," says his wife, a stalwart at the checkout. A total of 542 will complete the challenging lakeside course. The runners set-off in groups of 100 or so at 90sec intervals to avoid creating bottlenecks along the narrow path that is gained after the 2nd kilometer. I find myself following the leader of my group along the opening kilometer of the lakeside promenade - I've not only skipped breakfast but now I've completely forgotten Albert's advice to "make a steady start". The end result is that I have a run that I can describe as 'promising'. The years roll back as I cut 7 mins 7secs off my 2006 time - coming home in 62min 49sec - 13th of 22 V55 finishers and 352nd overall. More than a peripatetic beginning I muse - but I know there's lots more to come if only I can avoid injury. At 59 (and a half) I cross my fingers when I lace my shoes. Gwilym Williams LETTER

Page 8: Clayton Harrier Newsletter - online mastercopy · COMMITTEE NEWS COMMITTEE MEETING 29th OCTOBER 2007 18 members were present at the meeting at the Peel Park Hotel, Accrington. The

It was a lovely sunny day. I was in the middle of one of my favourite cross-country training runs. Suddenly, on my right, I spotted a low flying light plane coming straight for me. There was something unusual about it though. It was exceptionally low, I could see the pilot. And its landing lights were on full blast. Strange, I thought, there aren’t any landing strips around here! For a laugh I decided to wave at the pilot. To my delight and amazement, he or she gave the plane a quick right flip in response as it passed over! It set me back thinking about my ambition at the tender age of 20, to become an RAF pilot. I had the necessary qualifications and even had the application forms. A police test earlier had revealed that I had outstanding reflexes. Biggin Hill beckoned! It was just unfortunate that, due to pressure at work as an unhappy draughtsman (I detested the job), I had a nervous breakdown. That put paid to my plans to become a pilot although health records are supposed to be confidential. Flying fascinates me. Every time I fly, I always insist on having a window seat. For most of the flight my face is glued to the window. Long before 9/11, I was once allowed to go and look at the flight deck. To my amazement, the Captain and the First Officer were strapped in their seats reading newspapers! I calmly asked who was flying the plane! “Oh, don’t worry, sir, the computer is in charge at the moment!”, was the response. Truly amazing. It’s incidents like these that make running all the more enjoyable, and they are all recorded in my training diaries. Can anyone else recall unusual incidents on training runs! I and maybe other people would be interested in reading them! Yours in sport Robert K Hargreaves LETTER Please can I put Barry Brock forward for run of the month as his achievements are; Burnley Fire station 7- 1st Vet 40 Green Drive 5-1st vet 40 and the Lancashire AA 5 mile road champion at Vet 40 Accrington 10K- 1st Vet 40 Also consistent Effort, Enthusiasm & to be honest also a different name in there from the usual but still being deserved & a smile to a lot of people’s faces as he had the cheek to ask on the forum. With Thanks, Kind Regards, Forrest (Michael O’Donnell) LETTER I would like to vote for Barry Brock for run of the month as he is possibly the greatest runner I have ever met. ......And to shut him up !!!! Regards Gary Shaw LETTER

Page 9: Clayton Harrier Newsletter - online mastercopy · COMMITTEE NEWS COMMITTEE MEETING 29th OCTOBER 2007 18 members were present at the meeting at the Peel Park Hotel, Accrington. The

Shutting Barry up 4 a month! I would like to nominate Barry Brock for run of the month for his three first vet40 places in the fire station 7 green drive 5 and the Accrington 10k. Regards Mick Tomlinson LETTER Please may I nominate Barry Brock for the "run of the month" for October 07 Race: Accrington 10K- 1st Vet 40 Barry deserves this award as it reflects all the hard work he has put in training throughout 2007!! Well done mate!! Many thanks Jamie Baldwin LETTER Congratulations to the following Clayton Ladies who appeared in the recent 'Fell Runner' magazine. They all finished in the W50 category in this year's English Championships: Wendy Dodds, Katy Thompson, Maureen Laney, Linda Lord and Jean Rawlinson. I didn't see any other club with 5 ladies in one category - many had 4, but I may be wrong. Also, Karin Goss appeared in the W55 results. So congratulations to you all. CLEM may be short on junior runners but has great strength in the Vets!! Best wishes Maureen Ashton LETTER Gracias from El Presidente Thank you to those who responded to my appeal. Firstly, Richard and his band of helpers produced a course which was really well marked out and marshalled; no chance of getting lost or cutting corners. Next, despite the miserable day, lots of members turned up to run, who had not run for several years. It was wonderful to see you all and many thanks for running. Maybe we did not have a century of runners - 2 juniors, 18 ladies and 52 men - but with our marshals and spectators, we probably totalled 100 with 'creative accounting'. Saving the best til last. What a treat! Jane Murphy had made 3 tins of delicious cakes. The delight of our men when they came into the tent after the race to discover their reward, was a pleasure to see. Ted Orrell was really disappointed to see me choose the last chocolate coated flapjack. It was positively scrumptious, Ted!!. Many, many thanks, Jane, on behalf of everybody who enjoyed your creations. And really finally, especially on a day like Saturday, many of us so appreciate our 'magical'

Page 10: Clayton Harrier Newsletter - online mastercopy · COMMITTEE NEWS COMMITTEE MEETING 29th OCTOBER 2007 18 members were present at the meeting at the Peel Park Hotel, Accrington. The

Clayton tent. We arrive - and there is our shelter - and many of us leave it standing after the race as we head for home. Like magic it is there again at our next race. On behalf of all of us, could I thank Sean and Mark and all the others who help with the tent. I for one, appreciate it. El Pres. LETTER Tour of Pendle A big thanks from me and Doreen to all who helped make the day a big success. Unfortunately I had reports of litter being left on the course, this is regrettable and just not on, it just needs shoving down your vest and you can move it around and get it on your back out of the way. Then it’s easy to take home with you when you finish. Plastic bottles are easy to carry that way, they have no weight when empty. I'm sure most people drop it without thinking, it’s the excitement of the race, well I like to think that. I will be on Pendle on Saturday morning doing a womble, if anyone else is about I would appreciate them picking up what they can. The "dirty mark/path" we leave on the fell will grow over and repair but litter is not acceptable and is a great threat to the continuance of any race and the image of Fell Runners in society. Kieran Carr PS Here's a thank you from Holmfirth:- Dear Kieran Can you please pass on our thanks to all the organisers and helpers at yesterdays race. It was tough enough for us in yesterday’s conditions, I can't imagine what it's like in bad weather! A great event, we look forward to further pain in future years. Cheers Ian Arnold and the Holmfirth Harriers Boys LETTER Congratulations to the Ben Nevis duo of Bob Mitchell and Andrew Walmsley on gaining 'Run of the Month' (November's newsletter) and also to Kieran Carr on his V60 win at the Ben. It was my great pleasure to go on a Lakeland training run with Bob, Andrew and other Clayton friends during my recent visit to the UK and also to get along to spectate at the FRA Relay in Bowland. The dreaded 60 creeps ever nearer - only 2 months away as I pen this note. Various possibilities have been considered - the 3-Peaks is probably one peak too far, the Snowdon International is probably one blister too many, and the Full Tour comes a bit too soon. All things taken into consideration, he checks with his manager, gets the nod, I'm pencilled-in for the WMRA / IAAF Grand Prix Race at Ebensee on 10th August, as my 60th year highlight. The Feuerkogel Berglauf as it is known is an 11km uphill race set in dramatic lakeland scenery. The 12th running of the event, in August 2007, was won by no less a runner than New Zealand's several times world champion runner Jonathan Wyatt. Anybody out there like to give it a go? There's a handy lakeside campsite situated nearby on the shores of Lake Traunsee. The location is about an hour's drive south-east of Salzburg.

Gwilym Williams LETTER I was very interested to read Roger Dewhurst’s review of the Pendleton Fell Races from 1969 onwards in October’s newsletter. He touched on the very beginning of my running career in 1972. I was a recent convert from amateur football at that time, not having done any running since leaving school in 1956. Harry Smith was instrumental in encouraging me to take up athletics by introducing me to the Banoldswick Fell Race, which he organised at that time. My weight was a whopping 12 1/2 stone then, and although I was reasonably fit for football, I found running uphill on Weets a big ask. However, I persevered and my first ever race was Weets in August of that year (1972) with a finishing position of 113th of 127 finishers. Next up was Burnsall, a real shock to the system, 57th of 59 finishers, and then on to Pendleton, now a fully fledged member of Clayton and, as Roger pointed out, 52nd of 54. Two more races followed, Thieveley Pike and Gale. On then to my first full year of running, 1973, and I would go and complete 12 fell races, including Pendle, Pen-y-ghent, Latrigg, before Weets again - 6 1/2 minutes quicker and 1 1/2 stones lighter! Pendleton for the second time, 3 minutes better and 25th of 52 finishers. This was followed by Ben Nevis for the first time in 2 hours 13 mins after missing the start. I went to complete 14 fell races in 1974, including the Ben again in my best time of 2 hours 6 mins, having arrived on time. New races that year included the 3 Peaks in 3 hours 46 mins (never bettered), Skiddaw, and Kinniside, which saw a win for a good friend of mine, Dave Halstead. Regards Harry Manning

RACE REPORT FOR THE GATINE MARATHON, PARTHENAY, DEUX SEVRES, FRANCE. 28/10/07 Sent in by Graham A Cunliffe The Gatine marathon is a small well organised 2 lap event put on by the Jog Gatine running club and includes a relay of 13.1 miles for teams of 2, the course is undulating & mostly road with around a quarter on rough farm tracks. Start time was 9.30am, the last time I ran in France it was 30 degrees this particular morning it was minus 1.5 degrees!! with no wind at all. There were 77 starters in the marathon and 66 teams in the relay. My intention was to run around 2.55 and with this in mind I set a KM pace of 4.10 as a target, the 1st KM although slightly downhill went by in 3.45!!! As my usual rush of blood set in so I steadied things off and settled at the right pace, all was uneventful until 15km (10 miles) when I started with a pain in my left calf, after easing back a little I decided to get to half way and see how it was feeling, half way was reached in 1.28.43 and apart from the calf I was cruising along without effort so decided to risk it and continue, was it wise??? I would soon find out!! I nursed it along until 30km (18.6 miles) when I was caught by another runner who had either had a very hard paper round or was definitely a V50, My mind was awash with possibilities, keep with him and try to out sprint him??, very risky with a sore calf, let him go?? not a chance, pick it up and hope nothing goes bang and he drops off?? It was at this point I had a very vivid picture of Andy Robinson’s face in my mind, he had a gleeful grin on his face as I winced under his expert touch which would surely sort my calf out, so that was it, I was going for it whatever happened.

Page 12: Clayton Harrier Newsletter - online mastercopy · COMMITTEE NEWS COMMITTEE MEETING 29th OCTOBER 2007 18 members were present at the meeting at the Peel Park Hotel, Accrington. The

The pain was bearable on the flat but quite bad on the hills, I picked up the pace over the next km and began to pull away but the gap stayed stubbornly around 50 metres, he had obviously decided I looked a V50 as well and he wasn't going to give up without a battle, so in true British Bulldog spirit I thought of blighty and really stuck the boot in, I was now breathing hard but still quite comfortable despite only running on one leg as my left one was now just going through the motions. I had opened up a gap of about 200 metres when we hit a sharp climb with just over a mile to go, I would imagine I looked like Quasimodo on speed as I limped up the hill and pushed on to the finish, fortunately I could just jog the last 400 metres and finished in 2.59.28 with my friend just behind in 3.00.23, as I crossed the line and stopped I soon realised I was in trouble, I could hardly walk, boy was I going to need Andy when I got home. The presentation was the usual French affair with much food, booze, merriment and prizes which went on for ages but was a great spectacle, I ended up on the podium and was interviewed by the announcer in my pigeon French again. I am now left (Tuesday) with a very swollen Soleus muscle and shin for my troubles, would I do the same again?? I'll leave that to you to decide, I'm sure you know my answer anyway. The race was won by Richard Emmanuel in 2.47.33, 1st lady Lozivit Gwenola in 3.32.57. The relay was won in 2.23.02.

ANSWER TO STEVE BRECKELL’S QUIZ (All three replies to Steve’s quiz are printed below. The first correct one received was from Pete Browning. Thanks to everyone who replied. Ed.) PETE BROWNING: The race is the Sedbergh Hills Fell Race, and the four runners are heading away from checkpoint four at Bowderdale Beck up the long climb to checkpoint five on The Calf. The four are our own Steve Breckell and Harry Walker, both in their Blackburn days, and the guy in fourth is Ronnie Campbell from Lochaber AC. These are our three plasterers, so the mystery man in third must be the schoolmaster. It's hard to see who it is, but from the clues that we have international runners and Three Peaks winners in our midst, I think it must be Kendal's Hugh Symonds. He was/is a schoolmaster at nearby Sedbergh school, so this would have been his training ground. Finally, I think this is the 1981 race, so the decade is the 80's. For any members unfamiliar with the Sedbergh race, it is a great event, with plenty of running, lots of grass, no rock to speak of, and a flying descent to the finish. It makes a good introduction to long A fell races. STEVE BRECKELL’S REPLY: Pete Browning's correct on all counts. I think the race may have been 1982, because Hugh Symonds won it in record time. I think the bird must have picked Hugh up and dropped him at the finish, he was that quick. It was a very warm day hence no ppe

being carried. Anyway Peter must be a good detective or a right old anorak. TONY PEACOCK: The race is the 1980 Sedbergh Hills and the section of the course is the long climb from check point 4 to check point 5 on The Calf. The runners are:- John Mcghee Harry Walker Bob Whitfield R (Ronnie?) Campbell My article on the buzzard certainly seems to have generated quite a bit of interest, with pieces in The Westmoreland Gazette and The Sun no less. BILL SMITH: The event is the Sedbergh Hills Race in the early 1980s, showing the climb from the Bowderdale Beck checkpoint to The Calf. The runners, left to right, are Ronnie ‘Cammie’ Campbell (Lochaber), Hugh Symonds (Altrincham), Harry Walker and Steve Breckell (both then with Blackburn Harriers). I must admit that Symonds is purely a guess (the schoolmaster). If it’s not him, I’d go for Malcom Patterson (then Dark Peak)??

THE 24TH CALDERDALE WAY RELAY - SUNDAY 9TH DECEMBER 2007 (The Calderdale Way opened in 1978 and is a fifty mile (80km) circular route stretching from Todmorden all the way across around Hebden Bridge and Halifax to Baliff Bridge, then back round by Sowerby Bridge, Cragg Vale and Todmorden again. The information below is taken from the Halifax Harriers’ website: http://www.halifaxharriers.co.uk. The website has full details of the route. The photos show part of the route above Todmorden. Good luck to all Clayton members taking part in the Relay. Ed) A 6 leg 50 mile (12,000 feet climb) relay around Calderdale. Start/finish at Old Rishworthians RUFC, Copley, near Halifax (GR085224).

The race comprises 6 stages each with changeover points at road crossings, each stage must be run by pairs who must stay together at all times. Teams have to provide their own transport and support vehicles. The route is not flagged or marshalled (except at certain main road crossings, checkpoints and changeover points) and teams are expected to know the route prior to race day.

Please accept my apologies for this gratuitous picture of a Xmas pudding. I had to fill this space up at the last moment and it’s the only thing I could find. You can eat as much pudding as you like as long as you remember “The priorities for sports nutrition up to a fairly high level are quite simple. Make sure you eat plenty of carbs, especially right after the training while your body can still upload glycogen at a high rate.” !!! Ed

DID YOU KNOW that the notorious band "Iron Maiden" were influenced by Alf Tupper! This is from the track, "Loneliness of the long Distance Runner". "The tough of the track With the wind And the rain that’s beating down on your back Your heart’s beating loud And goes on getting louder And goes on even more ’til the Sound is ringing in your head With every step you tread And every breath you take Determination Makes you run never stop Got to win got to run ’til you drop..." Congratulations to Lloyd winning in fine style and knocking 55secs off the record. Congratulations to Jackie following up from last years second place with a win this year. Also congratulations to Ken Taylor winning the Vet 60 category in a new record time.

This was the largest field we have ever had, 287 started and 271 finished. Thanks to all the marshals on the course and at the finish, they make everything run smoothly and their humour lasts all day. Also thanks to Pete Bland Sports for the numbers, pins and generous sponsorship of the prizes. Next years race will be on 15th November, the village hall is already booked. Thanks for buying all the soup, Audrey bought all the stuff based on my guess on how many runners there would be and she said she would tip it over my head if she did not sell it. Finally, on a more sober note, I was told after the race that a lot of litter had been dropped on the course, well this is just not on, its never been a problem with this race before, if you have any wrappers or bottles its so easy to put them down your vest and take them home with you. Litter comes from individuals, make an effort to remember and do not be that person. You could be putting the future of this race in jeopardy. If you dropped any, how about going back on Saturday and picking it up. Lost property: Purple cardigan, pair of blue gloves, grey Thinsulate hat. All the best for Christmas and the New Year, Kieran & Doreen Carr
