S.T.E.A.M. Education Expands With Second Competition TeamAdded this School Year: Drone Team Joins VEX Robotics Team

S.T.E.A.M. education (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics) is a priority in the Maumee CitySchools and each school has a S.T.E.A.M. Lab and a curricular focus that begins in kindergarten. The high schoolhow has two competition teams. Above, members of the MHS Drone Team confer with members of the Otsego HSteam before they fly their drones through the course set up at Penta Career Center in February.

This is the second year that MHS has had a VEX Robotics team. Below is the team that built the robot tocompetition specifications and competed in three VEX competitions this year; Kalahari, Toledo Technical Instituteand Morango HS. MHS computer science teamer Mr. James Stanton (center back) is the advisor for both teams.

Congratulations to MHS senior Alyssa Delffs (second from left) who competed in the OHSAA State GymnasticsMeet for the 3rd year! Alyssa finished 23rd in the All Around ­ which includes 21st on Bars, 27th on Floor, and 24thon the Vault.

Maumee added a new afterschool S.T.E.A.M. program for 4th and 5th graders this year. Girls Who Code is anational program that is reaching almost 90,000 girls across all 50 states. Students are introduced to computerscience and enhance their skills through fun activities. There are close to 20 students who participate andadvisor/teacher Stacey Snyder says, "The girls really love coming to Girls Who Code and it is great to see them soexcited about computers, computer science, and programming languages.”

YOU ARE INVITED TO THESE SPECIAL EVENTSMaumee Senior Citizens Invited to Dessert Reception Prior toSpring Musical ­ Newsies ­ March 15Maumee High School is excited for their spring production of Disney’s smash hit about the real­life New York Citynewsboy strike of 1899, Newsies.

Senior citizens who reside within the boundaries of the Maumee City School District are invited to adessert and coffee reception at 6:15 p.m. before the Maumee High School performance on Friday, March15. The curtain goes up at 7 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at Maumee High School, 1147 SacoStreet. This event is by reservation only. Call Maumee City Schools at 419­893­3200, no later thanWednesday, March 13.

Two additional performances of Newsies will be staged on Saturday, March 16 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, March 17 at2:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults and $7 for students/seniors. Richard Kazmaier Memorial Golf Outing Set for June 10Golfers and sponsors are needed! This annual event will be at South Toledo Country Club on Monday, June 10with an 11:30 a.m. shotgun start. The cost is $85 and includes tee­gift, a round of 18, cart, dinner, awards. 100% ofproceeds from the golf outing fund the Richard Kazmaier Scholarship Fund that awards scholarships to MHSscholar­athletes each year.
