CLASSROOM TESTS
The classroom tests are relevant to the teacher’s objectives. The class room teacher can tailor the test to fix his objectives and also make the test fit the class and even individual pupil.
![Page 3: Classroom testing-tailor made test](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022050906/5549d5dbb4c9051c778b502f/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Classroom evaluation instruments should not be restricted to the conventional paper and pencil tests. Some instructional objectives cannot be evaluated by these tests. We should use rating scales, check lists and other observational techniques as well.

TEST
Test is a systematic procedure for observing persons and describing them with either a numerical scale or a category system. Thus test may give either a qualitative or quantitative information, test commonly refers to a set of items or questions under specific conditions
![Page 5: Classroom testing-tailor made test](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022050906/5549d5dbb4c9051c778b502f/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
PURPOSE OF TESTS
•To determine the extent that students are achieving the stated goals.
•To assign grades.•To determine final grades or make
promotion decisions•To motivate students to study.•To communicate to students what
material is important.•To know how much class time to
allocate for the current topic.
![Page 6: Classroom testing-tailor made test](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022050906/5549d5dbb4c9051c778b502f/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
•To identify areas of deficiency in need of remediation or further learning.
•To identify areas where the course/curriculum is weak.
•To discover what parts of the lesson the students are finding most valuable.
•To identify a more efficient or effective way in which to teach.
•To decide ways to change the lesson the next time it is taught.
![Page 7: Classroom testing-tailor made test](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022050906/5549d5dbb4c9051c778b502f/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
CLASSIFICATION OF TESTS
• By format Essay type vs. Objective type
• By stimulus material Verbal vs. Non verbal• By purpose Criterion referenced vs. norm
referenced Achievement vs. performance Formative vs. summative
![Page 8: Classroom testing-tailor made test](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022050906/5549d5dbb4c9051c778b502f/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
TYPES OF TESTS1-ESASY TYPE
It is an item format that requires the student to structure a rather long written response up to several paragraphs
![Page 9: Classroom testing-tailor made test](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022050906/5549d5dbb4c9051c778b502f/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
2-OBJECTIVE TYPE TESTS
• Any test having clear and unambiguous scoring criteria •Test that can be objectively scored •They can be reliably scored •They allow for adequate content sampling
![Page 10: Classroom testing-tailor made test](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022050906/5549d5dbb4c9051c778b502f/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
![Page 11: Classroom testing-tailor made test](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022050906/5549d5dbb4c9051c778b502f/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
CONSTRUCTION OF EASSY TESTS •• Ask questions that require the
examinee to show command of essential knowledge
•make questions as explicit as possible •should be no choice in question in
question paper •test constructor should prepare ideal
answers to all questions
![Page 12: Classroom testing-tailor made test](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022050906/5549d5dbb4c9051c778b502f/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
ADVANTAGES •• Can measure complex learning outcomes
•Emphasize integration and application of thinking and problem solving
• No guessing as in objective item • Require less time for typing, duplicating
or printing, can be written on board •Can be used as device for measuring
and improving language and expression skills
![Page 13: Classroom testing-tailor made test](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022050906/5549d5dbb4c9051c778b502f/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
LIMITATIONS
• Lack of consistency in judgments even among competent examiners
•They have holo effect •Question to question carry effect •Examinee to examinee carry effect •Language mechanic effect • Limited content validity
![Page 14: Classroom testing-tailor made test](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022050906/5549d5dbb4c9051c778b502f/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
LIMITATIONS
• Some examiners are too strict and some are too lenient
•Difficult to score objectively •Time consuming •Lengthy enumeration of
memorized facts
![Page 15: Classroom testing-tailor made test](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022050906/5549d5dbb4c9051c778b502f/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
SHORT ANSWER TYPE TESTS
• Short answer items requires the examinee to respond to the item with a word, short phrase, number or a symbol.
• The test has supply response rather than select or identify
• In the form of question or incomplete statement
![Page 16: Classroom testing-tailor made test](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022050906/5549d5dbb4c9051c778b502f/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
CONSTRUCTION OF SHORT ANSWER TESTS
•As for as possible question form should be used
•The question should not be picked up exactly from the book
•The question should not provide any clue
•The scoring key should be prepared •the blank space is to be completed
by an important word rather than trivial words
![Page 17: Classroom testing-tailor made test](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022050906/5549d5dbb4c9051c778b502f/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
ADVANTAGES
• Low probability of guessing the answer because it has to be supplied by the examinees rather than select identify from the given answers
• They are good to test the lowest level of cognitive taxonomy
• Very easy to construct LIMITATIONS
•They are unsuitable for measuring complex learning outcomes
![Page 18: Classroom testing-tailor made test](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022050906/5549d5dbb4c9051c778b502f/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
FORMS OF OBJECTIVE TYPE TESTS
A)two choice items 1. True/false items 2. Completion type (if two choices
are given against each blank) B) More than two choice items 1. Matching items 2. MCQs
![Page 19: Classroom testing-tailor made test](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022050906/5549d5dbb4c9051c778b502f/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
TRUE/FALSE TESTS (SHOOTING QUESTIONS)
A true false item consists of a statement or proposition which the examinee must judge and mark as either true or false
![Page 20: Classroom testing-tailor made test](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022050906/5549d5dbb4c9051c778b502f/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
ADVANTAGES
•It takes less time to construct true false items
•High degree of objectivity •Teacher can examine students on
more material
![Page 21: Classroom testing-tailor made test](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022050906/5549d5dbb4c9051c778b502f/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
LIMITATIONS
•High degree of guessing •Largely limited to learning
outcomes in the knowledge area •They expose students to error
which is psychologically undesirable
•They may encourage students to study and accept only oversimplified statements of truth and factual learning
![Page 22: Classroom testing-tailor made test](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022050906/5549d5dbb4c9051c778b502f/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
SUGGESTIONS
•Balance between true and false items
•Each statement should be unequivocally true or false. It should not be partly true or partly false
•Double negatives should be avoided •Long and complex statements
should not be used as they measure reading comprehension
![Page 23: Classroom testing-tailor made test](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022050906/5549d5dbb4c9051c778b502f/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
• Only one idea should be measured in one statement
•Explain which judgment is to be used true/false, yes/no, correct/incorrect
•Clues should be avoided •Statements should not be taken
directly from the textbook
![Page 24: Classroom testing-tailor made test](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022050906/5549d5dbb4c9051c778b502f/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
MATCHING TYPE TESTS
A test consisting of a two column format, premises and responses that requires the student to take a correspondence between the two.
![Page 25: Classroom testing-tailor made test](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022050906/5549d5dbb4c9051c778b502f/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
ADVANTAGES
• Simple to construct and score • Well suited to measure
association • Reduce the effect of guessing • They can be used to evaluate
examinee’s understanding of concepts, principle, schemes for classifying objects, ideas or events
![Page 26: Classroom testing-tailor made test](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022050906/5549d5dbb4c9051c778b502f/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
LIMITATIONS
•They generally provide clues
•They are restricted to factual information which encourages memorization
•If the same number of items are written in both the columns, the matching type is converted to MCQs at late stage and in the end it is converted to true and false category
![Page 27: Classroom testing-tailor made test](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022050906/5549d5dbb4c9051c778b502f/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
SUGGESTIONS •Homogeneous items should be
selected •No clue should be provided in both
the columns •All the items should be printed on the
same page •Premise should be written in the left
hand columned be numbered, responses should be written in the right hand column and be lettered
![Page 28: Classroom testing-tailor made test](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022050906/5549d5dbb4c9051c778b502f/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
•Responses should be more than the premises to ensure that examinee has to think even up to last premise
•Clear directions •Incomplete sentences should not
be used for premise
•Clear instruction to attempt
![Page 29: Classroom testing-tailor made test](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022050906/5549d5dbb4c9051c778b502f/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
MULTIPLE CHOICE ITEMS
MCQs consist of two parts:
Stem: A question or statement that is answered or completed by one of the alternatives. Distracters: Incorrect or less appropriate alternatives.
The student’s task is to select the correct or best alternative from all the options.
![Page 30: Classroom testing-tailor made test](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022050906/5549d5dbb4c9051c778b502f/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
ADVANTAGES
•They can measure complex level knowledge i.e. Understanding, judgment, ability to solve problems
•a substantial amount of course content can be tested because the examinees do not require much time for writing the answer
•objectivity in scoring even a layman can score
•they can check discrimination ability of students
•can be easily adapted for machine scoring
![Page 31: Classroom testing-tailor made test](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022050906/5549d5dbb4c9051c778b502f/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
LIMITATIONS
•They require examinee to select the answer from a fixed list and not permit to create or express and organize their own ideas
•examinees who do not the correct answer can succeed in guessing
•sometimes difficult to find four or five choices in construction
•time consuming at teacher end
![Page 32: Classroom testing-tailor made test](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022050906/5549d5dbb4c9051c778b502f/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
SUGGESTIONS
•Stem should introduce what is expected of the examinee
•specific determiners should be avoided
•vocabulary according to the level of students
•test items should have defensible correct or best answer
•the correct choice should not be at the same place in all or most of the items
![Page 33: Classroom testing-tailor made test](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022050906/5549d5dbb4c9051c778b502f/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
•all the choices should be plausible• the choice like “none of the
above” “all the above” should be avoided
•each item should pose only one problem
•teacher should construct MCQs on daily basis
![Page 34: Classroom testing-tailor made test](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022050906/5549d5dbb4c9051c778b502f/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
Objective vs. SubjectiveObjective Tests Undistorted by emotion
or personal bias Based on observable
phenomena or verifiable external criteria
Tend to reflect an analytical approach:
Specify exactly what will be examined (i.e., focus of key content)
Indicate exactly how it will be evaluated
Subjective Tests Affected by or reflective of
the ideas or feelings of a person
Not based on verifiable external criteria
Tend to reflect a holistic approach:
Focus on the whole system rather
than just concentrating on individual
components. Typically use scoring
rubrics
![Page 35: Classroom testing-tailor made test](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022050906/5549d5dbb4c9051c778b502f/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
Questions that provide students
with limited response choices
(selected response options):
Multiple choiceTrue/FalseMatchingFill-in-the blank (with
word bank)Typically used when the
primary goal is to assess students’ basic factual knowledge
Questions that require students
to formulate their own answers
(written response): Short answer/ListingFill-in-the blank (no
word bank)Essay/ReportDemonstration/
Exhibition/PresentationTypically used to assess
how well students recall or apply knowledge

If teachers are reasonably sure about what their students currently know, then the teacher can more accurately tailor instructional activities to what students need to know.
