Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.

Matter is composed of elements

Elements are represented by circles or dots. The

dots that are the same size and color are the same

element.

Elements

Elements are the basic building blocks of matter

An element is pure substance that cannot be broken

down or changed into another substance.

An element is made of one type of atom.

Each element is represented by a chemical symbol.

Molecules and Compounds A molecule consists of two or more atoms of the

same element, or different elements, that are

chemically bonded together.

An example of a molecule is

Can only be separated by chemical means, not

physically

Compounds

Compounds are molecules made up of atoms of

two or more different elements bound

together.

Made of elements in a specific ratio

Mixtures

A mixture is made of elements that are held together

by physical forces, not chemical.

No chemical change takes place

A mixture can usually be physically separated back

into its original components
