Duties and Responsibilities: This list of duties and responsibilities is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary.

• Performs skilled journeyman level work in the diagnosis, overhaul, repair, and preventive maintenance of the district’s bus fleet. Instructs mechanics regarding procedures and methods of vehicle maintenance.

• Ensures that buses are in a constant state of readiness and conform to Washington State Patrol standards at all times.

• Plan, schedule and perform the work necessary for maintaining all district owned motor vehicles. • Maintain an efficient and effective system for routine and weekly maintenance checks. • Establishes and maintains a clear tracking system for the receipt and issuance of parts and supplies. • Establishes and maintains files and repair/maintenance records. • Make recommendations concerning shop organization. • Evaluate needs and recommend purchase of new or replacement vehicles, shop equipment, and shop tools. • Assign spare buses as needed for trips and daily routes. • Provide Supervisor with ongoing updates on fleet status and parts inventory. • Dispatch buses and drivers as needed. • Plans, schedules, and prioritize work. Inspects repairs and provides feedback and training as needed. • Maintains availability at any hour to assist in the event of an emergency or vehicle malfunction. • Maintains availability to assist with checking road conditions during inclement weather, inspects for road hazards

(i.e., snow/ice, downed trees and/or electrical lines), and other safety related conditions as required by the transportation supervisor. Report’s findings to the transportation supervisor.

• Serves as an emergency substitute bus driver if an appropriate substitute cannot be secured. Performs duties and functions of these positions, and maintains all licenses and certifications required to perform these duties.

• Provides guidance to bus drivers on proper parking lot safety, pre-/post-check requirements, and the care and upkeep of district buses.

• Oversees the safe and efficient operation of the bus maintenance facility. Provides ongoing training to mechanics on work area safety hazards in order to ensure safe habits are practiced.

• Attends appropriate workshops and training programs as assigned by the supervisor. • Be familiar with and demonstrate competence in use of all shop tools, equipment, and methods required for

performing repair and maintenance of all district vehicles. • Maintains appropriate confidentiality. • Promotes a harassment-free environment. • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships; demonstrates a commitment to teamwork. • Ability to learn and properly utilize various machines/equipment especially as machines/equipment are upgraded. • Ability to learn and upgrade job skills in order to meet changing demands of the position. • Check and communicate via district provided email account at least weekly to stay current on district notifications. • Other duties as assigned

Working Conditions: Typical working conditions for the head bus mechanic require exposure to loud noises associated with gasoline and diesel vehicles. The employee is likely to be exposed to a variety of weather conditions and to fumes associated with vehicles and engines. Climbing, stooping, lifting, vision, twisting, bending and reaching are routinely necessary in order to perform the duties of this position. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 75 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 125 pounds. Bodily motions required to use hand and power tools are necessary and repeated throughout the typical workday. The head bus mechanic will interact routinely with bus drivers, support and supervisory staff, as well as other staff working in the transportation facility that is shared with the City of Anacortes.
