Michelin launching BFGbrand online tire sales By William Schertz
Tire Business staff
GREENVILLE, S.C.—Michelin North Amer-ica Inc. is launching an online tire pur-chasing option in the U.S. for its BF-Goodrich brand, starting in September inthe greater Charlotte, N.C., area and ex-panding nationwide in phases through-out the rest of the year.

Tire Business staff
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.—It wasn’t a bad personalexperience in automotive retail that sparked thecreation of AskPatty.com Inc. a little over adecade ago.
Rather, it was a glaring disconnect between fe-male customers who make up the majority of ve-hicle maintenance decisions and what’s typicallya male-dominated automotive aftermarket.
It was hardly a “female-friendly” landscape.Ten years since AskPatty.com Inc. launched
with blogs, a question-and-answer forum and acertification program for automotive retailers, founder Jody DeVere said she believes the com-pany has made a positive difference.
“I believe I’ve had a great impact on gettingthose women’s voices heard out in the market-place,” she recently told Tire Business.
In addition to blogs with advice on everythingautomotive, the website offers a forum wherewomen ask female automotive experts a vast ar-ray of questions from how to change the oil in
their car to whatto look for inbuying a vehi-cle.
The compa-ny originallyoffered a listingo f c a r dealer-ships it had certi-fied as “female friend-ly” after the staff hadundergone training on how to improve customerservice and appearance so as to improve theircredibility and develop a trust relationship withwomen customers.
Aftermarket leads the way
In 2009, AskPatty.com expanded the certifica-tion to the aftermarket, which has taken the leadin the number of certified “female friendly” busi-nesses. Ms. DeVere estimated there are just under3,700 locations certified in the U.S. and Canada.
“I believe I’ve hada great impact on
getting thosewomen’s voicesheard out in themarketplace.”

Adamsinstallation appointment at an authorizedBFG dealership in their area, according
to Greenville-based Michelin.Brian Adams, e-commerce project manager for
Michelin, told Tire Business the new service, which has been in development for about threemonths, was born out of evolving consumer de-mand.
“Today’s consumers, they have a desire to buybasically any product, anywhere, any time and onany device, and that’s become almost the tablestakes in the world of the Internet,” he said.
