•Why we put organisms into groups•How we do this

The 2 name (binomial) system• All organisms have 2 names – a name for the

species and a name for a larger group called a genus.

• Both names are in latin– So scientists all around the world understand

• The genus name comes first, and starts with a capital

• You underline the name ( in a book/ website it’s in italics)

• Eg Homo sapiens ( humans)

Find some names for other organisms

• Go to www.wikipedia.com• Type in:

• Cat• Dog• wolf• Tiger• Lion• Any other organism

• WRITE DOWN THE LATIN NAMES FOR GENUS AND SPECIES.

• What do you notice about the tiger and the lion?

• What do you notice about the wolf and the dog? What does this tell you?
