Model Power is pleased to announce its acquisition of Mantua Industries. A respected manufacturer of locomotives and rollingstock for model railroaders since 1926, Mantua is headquartered in Woodbury, New Jersey. Together these manufacturers havea total of over 110 years of experience and service to the model railroad industry.

Model Power has purchased all HO tooling, molds, parts and dies from Mantua Industries and retains rights to the name“Mantua.” Model Power will also be forming a new division called Mantua Classics whose initial production plans for 2003include the following locomotives: Pacific, Berkshire, 2-6-6-2, 2-6-6-0, Camelback and 0-6-0 Tank. The overall goal will beto produce quality products, fine-tune performance, enhance detail and dramatically cut the prices of steam locomotives.

For modelers concerned about what this acquisition means in terms of products and customer service, here are steps nowbeing taken by Model Power:1. Most parts are or will be in stock2. Metal boiler locomotives will be made with extra details not previously included3. Steam locomotives will be DCC compatible with an 8-prong receiver4. Tenders will be made with electrical pickup5. Drive trains for F7s will be flywheel driven and carry the high-tech F7 metal body used in Model Power’s MetalTrain™

Union Pacific and Chesapeake &Ohio are very popular railroadsamong modelers; that’s why thereare plenty of HO Scale models oftheir unique steam locomotives.Rivarossi C&O Allegheny 2-6-6-6s and UP Big Boy 4-8-8-4s, Challenger 4-6-6-4s and FEF-34-8-4s, plus the upcomingBachmann C&O “HeavyMountain” 4-8-2, are great on thehead-end. New Walthers ready-to-run UP and C&O cabooses extendthat realism to the tail-end of yourtrain consists.

UP’s CA-1s and C&O’s 90700-Series 25' wood cabooses, basedon pre-1925 steel-underframe carsthat replaced older all-wood cars,had a distinctive appearance. Insome areas, their steel underframeallowed pushers to couple directlyto the rear of the train rather thanhaving to couple into the trainahead of the caboose—a real timesaver on busy helper districts. Thenew Walthers models are eye-catching replicas of the uniqueprototypes these railroads usedacross their systems.

From Oregon’s BlueMountains to the WasatchFrontThe Walthers UP CA-1 ClassWood Caboose is a model of theroad’s early 1900s-era 30', offset-cupola car. Riding on wood-beamcaboose trucks for a smoother ride,they added a distinct flavor to therear of UP trains. Hundreds wereconstructed for UP and itssubsidiaries; they could be foundon lonely branches or mainlinemanifest trains up through the1960s.

Through the Gorge and Overthe MountainOn the other side of the continent,the C&O received 100 all-new 25'“cabins” (as cabooses were calledon the C&O) built by StandardSteel Car Company in the fall of1924. The distinctive center-cupolacars began their careers in coalcountry where they mingled withC&O’s big steam engines. Theyeventually spread to other parts ofthe system. While most werescrapped in the 1960s and 70s, thelast, #90796, was not retired until

1984—after almost 60 yearsof constant use!

A Finishing Touch for yourFreightsDuring the steam and classic-diesel era, cabooses wereeverywhere. Outside yard limits,almost every train or engine moverequired one; yards and helperstations had special caboosetracks where they were parkedand serviced. Switchers alwayscarted one along, and engine-onlymoves were called “caboosehops” because a caboose alwaysaccompanied the engine.

Needless to say, appropriatecabooses add authenticity toany layout.

New Walthers cabooses havefeatures ensuring that the realismof your UP or C&O train consistdoesn’t end after the engine rollsby.
