Classical Swine Fever in the Republic of Latvia
On 16th November, 2012 2 wild boars were detected positive to CSF by qRT-PCR close to the border with Russia and Belarus
On 27 November, 2012 three backyard holdings located in the defined CSF infected area were found CSF positive, in total 16 domestic pigs in 3 holdings
Protection and surveillance zones around the infected holdings were established on 27th November, 2012 and measures according to Council Directive 2001/89/EC were implemented immediately.
Protection and surveillance zones were lifted on 10th January, 2013.

Commission Implementing Decision 2013/90/EU approving the plan for the eradication of classical swine fever in feral pigs and the emergency vaccination of such pigs in certain areas of Latvia
Measure covered by the CSF eradication plan:-Testing of all dead and hunted wild boar ( + ASF) ;-Vaccination of wild boar;-Qualification of pig farms (including backyard farms); -Passive and active surveillance of domestic pigs;-Inspections on home slaughter (since November 2013)
CSF infected area is 20-50 km wide, about 460 km long and has a surface of ~ 9 000 km2
Risk area – 5 000 km2.
CSF vaccination area is a part of infected area, defined based on the geographical distribution of the CSF in wild boars, surface ~ 5 000 km2.

Conclusions
1.ASF outbreaks (both in wildboar and in domestic pigs) were detected in a frame of ASF early detection programme.
2.Until 2nd July ASF virus was confirmed in 12 wild boars (3 locations) and 3 domestic pigs in one backyard holding.
3.There is no epidemiological link between ASF outbreak in backyard pig holding and ASF outbreaks in wildboar.
4.Most likely ASF outbreaks in wild boar are introduced from neighbouring third countries.
5.There are at least two seperate epidemiological clusters of ASF in wild boar.
6.There is an epidemiological evidence that the introduction of the ASF virus in Latvia are not older than 2-3 weeks.
